Poetry
Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2024
Is like dancing in the rain
Letting go of a string of feelings,
Swinging on a rainbow of thoughts,
A soft whisper,
A cry of joy,
A beat of the heart.
And just as first rain drops kiss the earth,
The petrichor of words,
Hits the senses,
To pen beautiful poetry.

Dad left us
Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2024
He got a new young wife,
And with her two new children,
Buy one get two free.
Mum is mentally strong,
She didn't break down,
She opened a catering business from home.
We don't miss dad,
Mum has so much love and her time to give,
Like the gentle rays of sunshine,
That engulfs us in its warmth
Giving us new hope and encouragement each day
And that's enough for us.

Welcome,
At last you have come
Don't bother me.
Let me be myself,

Happy,

In my mind
Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2024
When situations in life become tense,
Unbearable,
Stressed out,
I go to a quiet place,
And soar my imagination  a flight is space.
A place where I become whole
To explore my ageing soul
Where I chase away my blues
Where reality fades and dreams come true.

Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2024

A time to share your happiness,
A time to be grateful for the Lord's blessings,
Whatever came your way,
A time to pray to make 2025 a fruitful year.

Listen my love
Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2024
Hear the whispers of the wind,
The rustling of the leaves,
As they dance on the branches,
The sweet chirping of the birds
The gentle beat of the waves on the soft sand,
The silent cry of my soul,
I LOVE YOU

Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2024
Some people don't like me,
Because of hearsay of others,
With others my aura does no click with theirs,
I don't heed them and keep my distance,
And some, as time goes by and they come to really know me,
Change their attitude for better.

My son
Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2024
My son didn't like reading,
I had to stay with him and make him read his library books,
I would buy exciting adventure and mystery books for him,
He said reading was boring,
He preferred playing outdoors,
Or playing pranks.
He moved into his teens,
Still no joy in reading,
Teenagers love romance,
So I bought him a pack of "Mills and Boons" books,
That got him into reading.

Who will protect her pride any time.

Daughter
Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2024
You are blessed if Allah gifts you a daughter,
In all aspects of life she will stand by you till the end,
Whilst a son will be yours till he gets married.
A daughter is your truth,
A reality,
Your joy and laughter,
Your caretaker,
And yours forever.

Salmas's Chutney
Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2024
Half rotten tomatoes boxes,
Father coaxed,
Throw them in trash,
Ideas come in a flash,
Let's make sauces,
To cover the losses.
Cut away the rotten part,
For a start,
Boil, skin and grind the rest,
Add vinegar, paprika, food colouring, sugar and salt to give taste.
Mum came to hint,
From the garden get fresh mint,
And we came up with fresh Tomato Mint Chutney
A dip for samosas, bhajias,
mishkaki and salads.

My Grandchildren,
Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2024
I don't need your tears,
When I pass away,
I need your hugs and laughter,
Send me WhatsApp with love emoji,

Gives it a steady rythmn,
A poultice for my soul.

My dear child
Salmabanu Hatim Nov 2024
It grieves me to see you in pain,
With all those tubes sticking out,
The roots of my womb tears me apart,
My heart bleeds.
I can come and take care of your home and family,
I can run errands for you,
I can be your caretaker,
I can sit beside you to recite the Quran and duas,
Beseeching Allah to heal you.
The doctors can ease your pain,
You scream for the pain to go away,
But love, pain is the only thing that you yourself has to endure,
Pain cannot be shared, bought or sold.

I am happy
Salmabanu Hatim Nov 2024
I don't  care for the opinions of others,
I dress well but in attires I feel comfortable,
I eat when I want to,
I sleep when I want to.
I still coach a few students to keep me busy,
I love the feel of water,
So take my time in the shower.
I am not into meat,
I love fruits and nuts,
I must have an ice cold glass of coconut water everyday.
I keep in touch with my children, my sister, nieces, nephews and friends,
On the phone or WhatsApp,
My son and daughter ring me everyday sharing anecdotes and news of mundane things in our life.
Living alone is an advantage,
Nobody to nag you what to do.

Salmabanu Hatim Nov 2024

One little girl said,

I will try my best,
But if God wants them back,
I will make them comfortable for their journey.

Lazy and talkative
Salmabanu Hatim Nov 2024
Teachers who didn't teach me,
Found me sweet and quiet,
Teachers who taught me raised their eyes to Heaven and sigh.
Being tall I was dubbed Lady of the last desk,
I was very lazy except for my tongue,
That never stopped talking in whispers and joking,
Disturbing others who laughed loudly,
I pretended meekly to do my lessons,
Whilst those who laughed were punished.
I was too lazy to raise my hands to answer questions,
Found the task colossal,
My body and mind refused,
Even to go to the blackboard to solve problems.
Our school was Muslim co-ed,
Girls sat on one side, boys on the other,
Being talkative I ended up sitting with the boys,
That was okay with me and them,
Girls are mean and telltale,
Boys enjoy pranks,
Are friendly and helpful,
I never filled my pen with ink,
Every boy donated few drops till my pen was full,
Some would label my books,
Share their things and even help with homework,
Which I mostly finished in school.
Though I was lazy and naughty,
I was not mean or hurtful,
My peers enjoyed being my friends,
They said I gave life to the class atmosphere.

4 7 8 and no more
Salmabanu Hatim Nov 2024
My neighbour rang me,
I am going away for a few days,
Life is short,
Leave everthing and let's enjoy ourselves,
My treat.
We went to a hairdresser,
Had a manicure and pedicure,
That day she was different,
Full of life, bubbly and she smiled a lot,
Next she wanted to go shopping,
Not to all the branded shops she usually went,
She wanted to go to a crowded place full of hustle and bustle
So we went to the local market with the stall keepers shouting out their wares,
There were food stalls too,
Catering variety of cuisines
Serving piping hot delicious food,
We had samosas, kebabs and bhajas served with coconut chutney,
And ice cold sugar cane juice.
She loved animals,
So she coaxed me to go with her to the zoo,
She spent some moments at every cage,
Talking lovingly to the animals.
It was almost evening,
We drove to the beach side,
She saw some seniors doing chair exercises and yoga,
She joined them while I looked at them from the car parked close by.
Let's start with breathing exercise called out the instructor,
Breathe in to count of four,
Hold breath to count of seven,
Now slowly breathe out to count of eight.
I saw her slump in the chair,
Seniors gathered around her,
I quickly ran towards her,
She was no more.

Now a days girls
Salmabanu Hatim Nov 2024
A young well to do man decided to get married,
He had everything in life,
Money, his own business, cars and a beautiful house,
Even his parents and an unmarried sister lived with him.
He decided to get married,
So he proposed to his girlfriend,
She replied,"Yes, yes I will marry you,
But only if the extra baggage you carry comes as optional in our life.

In a fit of anger
Salmabanu Hatim Nov 2024
My daughter screamed,"I hate you,
You are not my mum,
Sorry dear I am your mum,
From the day I conceived you,
A gift from Allah,
Stamped and certified by Him as your mum.
I am not your magazine to browse through,
Not your mobile that you charge and use me as you wish,
Or change as and when you want to,
Nor am I your footwear,
That you can have as many pairs as you want,
Neither am I your cook,
Nor your driver or your ATM card,
That you can cash whenever you want.
Whether you like it or not,
I am your MUM,
A relationship  that can never be erased or deleted.
Catering and caring for you is not an obligation but my love for you-my daughter.
