In a fit of anger
Salmabanu Hatim Nov 2024
My daughter screamed,"I hate you,
You are not my mum,
Sorry dear I am your mum,
From the day I conceived you,
A gift from Allah,
Stamped and certified by Him as your mum.
I am not your magazine to browse through,
Not your mobile that you charge and use me as you wish,
Or change as and when you want to,
Nor am I your footwear,
That you can have as many pairs as you want,
Neither am I your cook,
Nor your driver or your ATM card,
That you can cash whenever you want.
Whether you like it or not,
I am your MUM,
A relationship  that can never be erased or deleted.
Catering and caring for you is not an obligation but my love for you-my daughter.

My proudest moment
Salmabanu Hatim Nov 2024
I was in the kitchen making dinner,
I was a mess,
My hair dishevelled,
An apron tied around me,
There was no make up on me.
As I stepped into the living room humming off tune,
All eyes were on me.
Oh no! What should I do?
Go back into the kitchen,
I didn't want to embarrass my daughter,
She had come with some important clients for a meeting,
All eyes were on me,
Looking at me quizzically.
Just then she came to my side,
Put her arms around me with a smile,
Meet my mum, the sweetest and most important person in my life.
Tears filled my eyes.

Many times
Salmabanu Hatim Nov 2024
My friend,
Came to school upset,
His father was an  English teacher,
His mother was a judge.
If he didn't do as he was told,
Spoke out of context,
Or did not complete his homework  but watched T.V,
They sentenced him,
He gave him fifty sentences to write,
She sentenced him to no pocket money,
Or no mobile,  laptop or T.V for a week.

Rose
Salmabanu Hatim Oct 2024
Was my neighbour's daughter,
She was blossoming into a beauty day by day,
Her fragrance played havoc with my senses,
So I became her butterfly,
Hovering around her night and day.

Me
Salmabanu Hatim Oct 2024
Me
I felt me,
Sad, anxious with a heavy heart,
Then I looked at me in the mirror,
Not bad, pretty,
It smiled, quirky,
With a bit of mischief.
Hmm,
I looked back again,
It had confidence,
Gone was the sorrow,
It burst into laughter,
I felt better.

When I tell mum
Salmabanu Hatim Oct 2024
She has to change with the times,
She tells me she has seen many seasons come and go,
Than I,
And now in my time with climate change I change too,
Not to teach an old dog new tricks.

He left me
Salmabanu Hatim Oct 2024
He hurt my heart,
My thoughts are still with him,
Though he came back and apologised,
My heart is stubborn as a mule,
Refuses to learn to love him again,
Even refuses to to anything with him.
For once I listened to my heart rather than my thoughts,
And cut all ties with him.

Parents
Salmabanu Hatim Oct 2024
When parents come to visit you,
Be loving and caring,
And grandchildren don't be glued to your mobiles.
Be a companion and not a superior,
Make time for them from your busy life,
Sit with them
Talk to them,
You will find leaning into love.
Let their eyes sparkle and lips curve into smiles,
Not shed tears in their pillows,
Only if I had not come.
Remember they have given you so much,
Their love time and care,
Made possible the life you enjoy,
In return they want to spend some time with you and their grandchildren.
Value them now ,
Not when you see their empty chair.

We had black tea,
Because we could not afford milk,
We could only have one meal a day,
The rice, chapattis, curry and pickles all mixed together so it would be enough for seven mouths.
Now, I see people  have black or green tea and one healthy meal,
Either they are on diet or to maintain health.

Quran
Salmabanu Hatim Oct 2024
I have learned to recite Quran at a very young age,
We went to school in the morning,
And to Madrasa in the afternoon,
I don't know Arabic,
My mother tongue is Gujrati,
I don't understand what I am reciting,
But it is the Book of Allah,
And after reading it,
I feel I have cleansed myself of sins,
A sense of calmness and peace comes over me,
And if any day I miss reciting it I feel empty.

What did I learn
Salmabanu Hatim Oct 2024
Before colonisation,
Informal education,
My true identity and culture,
With its elements,
Like traditions, customs,  norms and values.
To respect the elders at all times,
Children were to be seen and not heard.
We had a clan leader and we shared everything we owned.
We learned the DIY of everyday life,
Hunting , fishing ,farming and iron smelting,
And gathering of herbs and medicinal plants.
We realised the value of minerals and animal trophies after the coming of foreigners.
We had an Age system where work was divided according to *** and age.

Shackled with time,
Time to sleep,
Time to wake up,
Breakfast, lunch and dinner time,
Time to go to work, school or for a meeting,
Time to take a bath, to brush your teeth or to say your prayers,
Hurry, hurry, hurry time flies,
You will miss the train, bus , plane or the occasion,
Time, time, time,
Caged,
Your life ticking away in the value of time,
Every minute full of opportunities,
Make the most of it.

As I lay in bed
Salmabanu Hatim Sep 2024
Looking at the sky,
From my wide window,
The still fleecy clouds,
With a tinge of grey,
The sun smiling from behind them,
A gentle wind stirring the curtains,
I felt grateful
For the gift of life.
Bouquet of beautiful memories,
Showered with tears of joy,
Flash by,
Of loving family,
And dear, loyal friends,
Who have helped me to grow and live happily.

The sun may not rise,
The stars may forget to twinkle,
Tides may ebb,
But my love for you will never diminish,
Remain like the ocean depth.
Someday when the pages of my life end,
You will be the most beautiful and memorable chapters.
Never forget me,
Let me reside in the temple of your heart
For you are always in mine,
Seasons may change,
Days may change into nights,
But nothing or nobody will change my love for you.

To run a business
Salmabanu Hatim Sep 2024
The heart specialist needs our heart,
To run his business,
The pedicures needs our toes,
To run his business
The manicurist needs our fingers,
To run his business,
The barber needs our heads,
To run his business,
The dentist needs our teeth,
To run his business,
All in medical fields need a part of our body to run their business.
But THIEVES and criminals boost our economy,
We have to invest in CCTV cameras,
Lockers and locks,
Courts
Prisons,
Police Force,
Jailers and wardens,
Barbed wires and electric fences,
Curtains, grilled doors and windows
Police equipment like tasers, body cameras , two way radios, batons, bullet proof jackets and so on.

Life's like that
Salmabanu Hatim Sep 2024
I saw a man standing under a tall building,
In the hot sun,
His hands outstretched and cupped,
Anxiety showing on his face.
I asked him what he was doing,
He said,"My watch fell from the 10th floor,
I am waiting to catch it.'
I looked at him weirdly,
"But, it must have already fallen and broken,"
"No," he said,
It reads fifteen minutes late.

My older cousin
Salmabanu Hatim Sep 2024
Would never share her creamy cakes or sweet things with us ,
She would gorge them in front of us,
Getting tiffed we would jinx her,
"Hope all these goes into your thighs,"
And it had,
She could barely walk.
However, she is now on no sugar diet,
And goes to gym,
But, she still blames us for cursing her.

I Think
Salmabanu Hatim Sep 2024
Only love is not enough for a lasting relationship,
You need to let out a pinch of anger,
A bagful of care,
With a cup of sorrow and a drum of happiness,
Sprinkles of tiffs,
And most important is tons of trust and communication.

Salmabanu Hatim Sep 2024
We will have to leave this earth,
As I am here let me prepare for my Hereafter,
Fill my luggage with good deeds,
Collect a passport of humanity,
And finally a visa of love.
And when the last drop of tear falls from my left eye,
I am at peace,
As the Angel of Death comes to take my soul without pain.
Ameen.

Salmabanu Hatim Aug 2024
I love my religion.
Though it is very tough,
There are many rules of do's and more don'ts,
You need to have complete faith, patience and perseverance.
In a way the don'ts save me from sins and troubles,
The do's gives me infinite peace.
Many things my religion preaches,
Humanity,
Humility,
Positive attitude with gratitude,
Forgive and forget,
Do not scratch the scabs of hurt,
Less you bleed.
