I hear all the time
People saying to me
“You’re so brave”
Am I?
I don’t feel like I am
People say I’m brave
For facing THEIR fears
Speaking in public
Holding snakes
Being constantly poked with needles
These things aren’t frightening to me
So I don’t feel brave
I hold a lot of fears in my heart
Some more trivial than others
Failure
Heights
Rejection
Bees
My insecurities play into my fears
Holding me back
Keeping me from fully experiencing life
I don’t climb too high
I don’t initiate that conversation
Because I’m afraid
So I don’t feel brave
Somewhere out there
Possibly in an alternate universe
Someone thrives on my fears
Loves to do the things that scare me most
But fears the activities I find commonplace
Are they brave?
Am I brave?
this starts out weird and only gets weirder enjoy

Sometimes you don't know how brave
you can be till there is no choice
but to be.
As scary as the world is, we all have to be brave.

it's been ages since I did a Learned Learned poem!
Be back soon!

Nothing is impossible,
from the dazzling lights
to the trumpets from mars,
that heightens the imagination
from a curious state of mind.

What will you do?
What will you say?
In this day and in this hour
to embark on your journey
that is meant for you
and you alone.

All is possible
as the leaves grow
and wither down below
to disintegrate
and help provide for
a new generation of youth.

The world is yours
to change and to amend.

What will you do?
What will you say?
In this day and in this hour
to embark on your journey
that is meant for you
and you alone.

As brave as my poems.
As simple and stark,
concise and complete,
in whole or in part,

yet with room for expansion,
letting you, as you read,
add truth to the equation
with the values you need,

giving permission to speak,
in the space in your head
and to complete the connection
or just take it as read.

Oh, to be as brave as my poems.
A rift off a line from Fiona Benson in interview: "...as brave as my poems."

The title is the declaration,
The beginning of the confrontation.
Strong and brave words,
Yet disguising a hidden meaning.
The opening stanza is the explanation,
Describing in fact and logic
How and why we feel,
Yet disguising the feelings themselves.
The middle of the poem is the emotion,
Grasping towards the heart of the soul,
Exploring what makes us human,
Yet not providing a satisfying ending.
The final stanza is the end of the argument,
The dramatic finish where you turn on your
Heel and walk away, leaving your foe
With nothing but a look of astonishment.
Yet sometimes, The Poet may not
Complete the task in real life.
Our victories must be written out,
Preserved in ink or on a hard drive,
Because The Poet doesn’t have enough courage
Without his words by his side.
Yet that is the way of The Poet.

So innocently and beautifully created,
Though a life’s entirety can be utterly spent in search, imperfectly patient and imperfectly sated.

For that love you can be immortalised with,
Even unchanged by jealous Time, that weaves itself between hearts and minds, with nothing to take but only to give,
Though is it true lovers souls can forever live...

Life can be without and ones own life without in turn,
But life is no life at all without gentle fire that can be held with no burn,
A passionate fire that all mortal hearts deservedly yearn.

Love is truly more complex than mortality will ever know,
Seemingly with power to transcend our hearts and souls so much so,
That we can continue to be, long after our spiritual self is freed.

It’s easy to think we are so much in love today, and even more so tomorrow,
Though frightful to think that this Love may turn to sorrow.

Inevitably we may need to let go, we cannot keep what is merely borrowed.

I am Jimmy.

what is fear?

is it the smell of smoke and ashes
with a raging fire over the hills?
it is a common misconception that
the flames take the lives of the majority
but actually, it’s the smoke that kills
yet we never make that a priority
due to the uniformity of
smoke detectors placed in our homes
to ease the apprehension

is it the sight of a car accident
over on the side of the interstate?
we know staring is a sin but
it’s as if we cannot look away
seems like the car was the
source of the flames
it’s evident that the girl will be
hospitalized until half past eight
so we stay and wait for some sort of update
but the ambulance is running late and
she can’t see straight; she’s in the hands of fate
but we take a deep breath when
ruby red and azure blue headlights
zoom past our peripheral vision
we take a deep breath
to ease the fear

is it the taste of your own blood
on your pale lips as you
lay paralyzed?
the medic was specialized in
handling events like this
but you envision the blurred profiles of
the loved ones you struggle to reminisce
and the amount of blood lost
was making you weak
not to mention the cut on your cheek that
made your skin even rosier than before.
and you, you are iron-woman
with only a little less iron in your veins
you are superwoman
breaking out of the chains that
hold you down
the hallucinations are almost over now
so the paramedic straps an oxygen mask
across your face
to ease your fear

is it the feeling of needles
poking and prodding,
heads shaking and nodding
as everyone talks about you but you?
every breath is a pain and
you could no longer feign a
contented expression
nothing but disdain remained
there was no such thing as comfort anymore
yet the anguish was something you
couldn’t even begin to ignore
so the doctors gave you a sedative
to ease your fear

is it the sound of your mother’s cries
that breaks the silence in the room
when your father begins to
wipe his own eyes?
“i know you love her,
but she won’t recover
unfortunately she’ll have to suffer”
is what the doctor muttered
underneath his breath
lord how he hated explaining death
so they all gifted you flowers
cards and compliments were showered
onto the hospital bed
but despite every effort
it was becoming more difficult to fetter
the fear that was now simply just
an aura
and everyone was looking for a
way to ease their worries
these flurries of fear could not be contained any longer

nevertheless; without fear,
there would be no such thing as bravery.
fear is a flame

I was so concerned about my own pain
That I forgot how the world crushed you
Over and over again

And yet

You still you found
the strength
To love me.
