Today
Matt Mar 2015
Watch over my family Jesus
And watch over the good people of this earth
Who try to do what is right

I was at the gym this morning about 2:20 am
Then I came home for a bit of breakfast
Toast and cereal
An avocado too
Who doesn't love an avocado?

I listened and recorded
A Buddhist talk on tranquility

Then it was off to the golf course
35, 50, and 80 yard pitch shots

This afternoon
In the local park
Meditating
While I listened to the Shurangama mantra

Lying in the grass
I watched bees pollinating small flowers
A mother played with her daughter

As I left I saw a beautiful asian woman in her backyard

I came home and cleaned a few golf clubs
And recorded a lecture given by a speaker
Who spoke at the National WWII musem
About important military decisions
FDR made during the war

I also began a recording of a lecture
About how the Red Army defeated Germany

Then it was off the golf course
I chipped *****

There was a mother and her daughters chipping
And another lady too

I accidentally picked up her yellow ball
Thinking it was mine
She said it was hers

I apologized and told her I have a yellow ball just like that
She didn't say anything in response
I wish she would have chatted with me a bit
And said not to worry
But that's okay
Peace be with her

Then I went to the range
Where I hit 7 irons and gap wedges
3/4 swing
Good extension on the back swing
Follow through to the target
Good crisp shots
Hit off of sandy turf

I came home to my family
I love them very much

Jesus please forgive me
For the hate I have had in my heart
Please forgive me for the evil thoughts that I had

Sometimes it has just been so hard for me
To continue to live here
I love my family so much
I really do

But it's not fair
I've tried so hard to do what I would like to do
Well, I'll just keep trying

And in whatever I do,
I should remember to try to show the love
That Jesus showed to us

Freely given love
It is in giving that we receive

Well, I'm alone again
I wish I had a girlfriend to hold
Maybe one day
Until then I will have to hold my pillow

Mindless Hours
Matt Mar 2015
Wasted time
Now she is watching Fox news again
The latest on the Hillary email scandal
She loves politics she says

What a joke
Our political system is a joke

A wasted life
Spent doing nothing
The wasted time she will never get back

An unexamined life is not worth living

I'd like to smash that television

Please do something productive
Your mind is rotting by the day!

Life Alone
Matt Mar 2015
I wish I had a female friend
A sweet woman to talk to

I just see my therapist
But that is only once a week

There is golf
And more golf
And history
And philosophy
And youtube videos

And there are the endless hours
And years alone

There are no jobs
At least there is golf

I wish I could see my therapist more

The one person you really like
You can't be with
Kind of funny
In a way

Ah well
I don't suppose it matters
This is all just some automatic program
The creator wound it up like a clock
And let it run

Best not to expect to meet anyone
No new friends I'm sure
Just live alone

A Terrible Poem
Matt Mar 2015
These people are obnoxious
And sometimes I tire of seeing them

I'm an angry man
And I grow tired of this home

I'm an angry man
I can't find a **** job

I'm an angry man
I don't have any money

I'm an angry man
And the world can be a terrible place

I'm an angry man
Leave me alone
So I can hit golf *****
Matt Mar 2015
I hope to begin
My retirement soon

I talked to a teacher
Who had just retired
"I'm finally free"
She said
Lol!

Free from what?
You were suppose to enjoy it after all

Freedom is doing what I love
Freedom is being a teacher
When I begin teaching
I will be entering into
A permanent retirement

Non striving
Let the times pass through
Cessation
Extinction

Gone beyond
All topsey turvey absolutes
This phrase I remember
From Allen Ginsberg's rendition
Of The Heart Sutra
Matt Mar 2015
I hear on an ad
That those who dare to dream
Drive the world forward

The world is not driven forward
Life is a natural process
Cease striving

The world cannot be driven forward
The world does not need to be saved
It's just the world
And let's just let it do it's thing

21st century life
Matt Mar 2015
The 21st century
It isolates me
I have my therapist
I love her
She is my friend

I have a few friends
Other than that
I am lonely!

I just have this machine mostly
And these youtube videos
F*!

And it's Friday again
And there is a guest at our house
And I'd like to go home
But I can't

And I'm here at Starbucks
Looks like the woman next to me
Is having a good time
Laughing and talking to somebody online

And what do I see outside
A group of friends talking
And having fun

And I'm alone
At least I have my youtube

Off to get some soup
At Whole Foods

Just Another Day
Matt Mar 2015
It's just another day
No money and no job

I lift weights
But don't get the body I want

Women ignore me
As if I don't exist
At this point, who cares?

I think I'd rather be alone
Me and my akward body
My left shoulder
For whatever reason is bigger then the other

I'll just go hit golf *****
Or chip and putt

Why buy into this broken system anyhow
Just f* it
American dollars are worthless
Anyhow

I'll search and search for years
Never finding a job
Oh well

It's just more life
Life isn't that great
After all

And when it's all over
I'll go to some better place
It better be great
After this place
I want to play golf there

Well, I guess I am in a negative mood
I suppose it could always be worse

It's just another day

(I would like to respectfully ask that you don't comment on this poem, thanks.)

Near Execution in Osaka

One day I was marching with other prisoners through the streets of Osaka, returning form that day's work. It was bitterly cold and my hands became numb. I placed my lifeless hands into the pockets of my ragged pants. As I entered the camp gates, I noticed a Japanese guard pointing his finger at me, calling me to the attention of another guard. Later, in formation along with the other American POWs, I noticed the same guard pointing at me and walking in my direction. He instructed me to follow him. I really didn't think much about this at first.

I followed the guard into the camp commander's office with the interpreter walking beside me. I was ordered to come to attention and bow to the major,  who was sitting at this desk. A few moments later, the interpreter came over to me and said, "You were marching down the road with your hands in your pockets, and that is not permitted for Japanese soldiers."

I replied, "I'm not a Japanese soldier. I'm a prisoner of war!" After hearing the major shout in Japanese to the interpreter, I was told in English by the interpreter, "The same rules apply to all POWs!" "I didn't know that," I answered. In a faint voice I told the interpreter, "Why don't they tell us their rules?" To myself I thought, if I knew al the rules I wouldn't break them.

The major screamed at the interpreter, who translated; "You are an American soldier and you do not march with hands in pockets!" I responded bluntly, "Let me know the regulations, and I will obey." The interpreter translated my answer for the major. With a shocked look on his face the major jumped out of his chair and whacked his clenched fist on top of the desk. I know now that I had really provoked him. By the manner in which he spoke to the translator, I could tell he wasn't thrilled by my attitude. He arose again quickly from his seat and walked toward me, and the guard made me bow once more.

The interpreter said, "The commander does not like your attitudes!" At that point, the major pulled his sword out and nicked my throat. I felt the blood streaming down my neck.

"Prisoner can be executed for disobeying orders!" the interpreter continued. All I could do was stand still with thoughts of terror running through my mind. I stared into the major's hateful eyes. I never took my eyes off him, not for a moment.

All of this, for just walking with my hands in my pockets. A strange feeling came over me, and I suddenly knew this was a very serious matter. The major yelled at the guard, "Take him outside! I do not want blood all over my floor!" I began walking out of the office, with the rifle point of the guard behind me pressing into my back.

He then ordered me to stop. I came to a complete halt, as instructed. I stood there waiting at attention for the next command, when I began thinking of and seeing myself buried in Japanese soil. My mind raced and I felt an imminent fear, but somehow I felt I had a fighting chance.

I heard the commander and interpreter coming out adjacent to where I was standing. As they were speaking back and forth in Japanese, all I could do was stand still. I was then ordered by the guard to bow one more time to the major.

"The major is going to execute you, so all of the men will know that breaking regulations won't be tolerated!" the interpreter announced. The major walked in front of me and pulled his sword out again and put it to my throat. They expected me to beg for mercy. The interpreter asked, "Do you have anything to say?"

"I guess," I told the interpreter, as I looked into the major's eyes. And then these words came to me, and to this day I have no idea where they came from.

"He can **** me, " I replied, "but he will not **** my spirit, and my spirit will lodge inside him and haunt him for the rest of his life!" I was asked by the translator to repeat what I had uttered. A terrifying feeling came over me instantly, and my blood flushed over my entire body, making me absolutely burn with horror.

I said, still staring into the major's eyes, "He can **** me but he will not **** my spirit and my spirit will lodge in his flesh for his entire life! The Americans are coming and any Japanese who kills an American without just cause will have their spirit haunt them forever!"

I did not grasp at first what I had actually said. I was prepared to dodge the sword if the major made  a move to swing it at me. I watched his every move, never taking my eyes off of him. All of a sudden, a mysterious expression appeared on the major's face. Then, to my amazement, the major made three steps back and lowered his sword. I gazed up to the sky and said, "Thank you , Lord." This was the first time I had seen a Japanese soldier back off from an execution.

The major then ordered the guard to take me to the pit in the earth that was used for solitary confinement. The guard, with his weapon shoved into my back, ****** me towards the 5'x5'x5' hole in the ground. As the Japanese guard lifted the cover to the hole, I wasn't sure that this ordeal was finished. He motioned for me to get down inside. Looking down into the depths of that dark place, I tried to get in. I landed head first, face down, after being pushed or kicked by the guard. My face and neck were hurting badly as I wiped the tears  from my eyes.

Homecoming and Nightmares

It was great being home, but everything that had happened to me was still roiling around inside me. It was like two people came home. One of them was the boy I had been and the one my family saw when hugged me and talked to me. The other was the man I had become, full of memories and feelings that I could not deal with. Things had happened so fast, and I had not been able to overcome the fear, the suffering, and the rage and pure hatred that I had inside me. When the war with Japan ended on September 2, 1945, I was a Japanese prisoner of war in a slave labor camp on the western coast of Japan about 500 miles by train from Tokyo.

That was just a few weeks ago. Now I was supposed to try to adjust to a life that for four years I never thought I would never live again. To my family and friends I was plain old Glenn Dowling Frazier, the soldier that was home again. But I knew I was no longer that person. My thoughts were often full, not of the freedom and love that surrounded me, but of the Bataan Death March, of the times that my body was so badly beaten and sick that I feared I would not live another night...

The horrors of the war were with me every day and night for the next twenty-nine to thirty years. At times, I wished I had never come home. I imagined how peaceful it would be to lie down in a quiet place and find the peace that only comes with death...

At times I would resort to drinking to try to forget my problem. It became impossible to tell anyone that my experiences in a war over 30 years ago were still haunting me. My body was telling me that something had to be done to end my problem, but when thoughts of resolving it came into my mind, I found it so strongly embedded in my beliefs that it was impossible to do anything about it. I was reaching the end of the rope.

Early one morning, about 2 a.m., I awoke from sleep, and before I really knew what was happening, I was kneeling by my bed praying to God. It was like an uncontrollable force working inside me, even giving me the words to say. In that prayer, I asked God to help me shake the curse that was controlling me.

I had asked my preacher at times about ways to get help and solve my problem, only to be told that I must forgive the Japanese. I said, "Oh no, I can't do that. They have never apologized to all of us, how can I do that?" And I continued to suffer.

But the force within me this night brought the tears. I cried my eyes out. Every thought that passed through my mind was like a voice inside me saying, "You must forgive everyone and everything that has hurt you. You must forgive the Japanese and forgive yourself for harboring this hate for so long. "

Take your vitamins Ray
All 150 that you take each day

That seems a bit excessive to me
A series of bridges:

Bridge one he says is to
Stay as healthy as possible
With diet and exercise
And current medicine

Bridge two:
Is the biotechnology revolution, where we can reprogram
Biology away from disease

Bridge three: Is to go beyond biology,
To the nanotechnology revolution
At that point he says nanobots can be injected
Into our bodies
They would augment our immune system

Now those nanobots could be helpful
To help prevent disease
But as far as allowing us to live forever
Sorry, it's not going to happen

We all age and die Ray
It's part of being a human being
You will not live forever Ray
And what kind of person would want to anyway?
So strange
How man feels like he must fight a natural process

Life will take its course
We all must return to the source of life
After we have lived

"Don't work with the Americans."
"Don't help the Americans."
This is what some of the Afghan interpreters are saying
After their poor treatment by the United States government

The Afghan Interpreters are angry
And they have a right to be
After most U.S. troops have left
Some are stuck hiding in Kabul

The Taliban tell the local people
That they are infidels
The Taliban **** many interpreters

The Afghan Interpreters struggle
Only about 30% get their visa

Some only have enough money
To make it to Greece
They live together
Barely any money
No hot water
Persecuted by the local police

One interpreter saved the life of an American soldier
The soldier helped him put together his visa packet
His visa took three years!!!

This interpreter had fought with them for 7 years
Had saved the lives of five American soldiers
Had been the personal interpreter for 12 U.S. senators

One interpreter
Did not leave on a flight approved by the U.S.
He had to leave on the next flight
Because the Taliban  was threatening to **** him

Thankfully the U.S. soldier
Had a place for him to stay
And could give him some money
The soldier promised him
He would help him get resettlement benefits
Even though the U.S. government stated
He was not eligible to receive his benefits
Because he did not arrive on a U.S. approved flight

The Vice Interviewer
Learns from the lawyers working for the interpreters
That there is a massive bureaucracy
The Department of Defense doesn't consider them veterans

The soldier tried to get a bill introduced
That would streamline the process
And increases the number of visas
To help the Afghan Interpreters

No legislation regarding immigration was introduced
Because of bickering among Republican members
The program ran out in September of 2014
So now thousands will be stuck in Afghanistan

One interpreter that was interviewed
Was stuck in Afghanistan
Working as a taxi driver
Fearing for his life

Many of the Taliban prisoners
Have been released
Now he fears for his life
He doesn't know what will happen

6,000 applicants
For 280 available visas
As of July 2014

May God bless the Afghan interpreter
Trying to live his life in peace
May God bless the Afghan people
It seems things never change for them

Afghanistan
Matt Feb 2015
The Afghan army insisted things
Were more secure in 2013

But they had to close down the schools
One man said the Taliban threatened to attack the schools

Now the men fight with Soviet era weapons
The American troop levels reduced

In one village
The people can farm and work freely
Because of patrols by the Afghan police and
The police took over the patrols after the Americans left
The police report what is going on to the military

The people want clinics and schools
To be built

The army leaves day to day security
In the hands of the National Police

The Police Chief says
They have gained the trust of the local people
And they discuss how to punish the warlords

May God be with the national army and police force
May they protect the people and keep them safe

Some Afghans
Living in Pakistan
Were forced to return to Afghanistan
After a school was attacked in Peshwar, Pakistan

The Afghans suspect
That local officials are taking advantage
Of the situation
To expel unwanted refugees

More than 33,000 undocumented Afghans returned from Afghanistan
In the first six weeks of 2015

Even some registered refugees
Have been driven out of Pakistan

Many returning Afghan families have nowhere to go
In Jalalabad, the closest big city
On the Afghan side of Torkham
Families pitched tents along a canal
Lacking any other resource

Their children pulled turnips from a nearby field
The most reliable source of food

One woman is worried
How her children will fare
They no nothing of the country
And what it is like

Their is great mineral wealth in that country
Perhaps that is the main reason why
The U.S. has plans to stay there
For an extended period

I doubt life for the Afghan will ever get better
Or be more secure
The Taliban are there to stay

33% of people live below the poverty line
I doubt that figure will ever improve either
Even if the country prospers from their mineral deposits
The common man won't benefit

Well, that's just how the cookie crumbles
In Afghanistan

The Sunni minority were marginalized

Sectarian killings were commonplace
In 2012 alone,
There were more than 1,600 deaths

The interviewer talked to a motorcycle gang
They said they wanted freedom

But some said they missed the way things were
Under Saddam Hussein
Some would trade the freedom they had
For the stability of Hussein's regime

The Shiah cleric
Says there is an assault on Iraq
Exemplified by the copying of corrupt Western culture.

The cleric wanted to eliminate American influence
Of any kind

Checkpoints make getting
Around the city a hassle

Subcultures in Iraq are under attack
Rap, metal, emo, and classical
All are looked down on

Gays are persecuted

The military uses a faulty device
That is supposed to detect bombs
But has been proven not at all effective

The city exists between extremes
There is the religious extreme
And people who want to be westernized
Without understanding what that is

The infrastructure was ruined by the war
Hopefully life will get better
As they continue to rebuild the infrastructuree

The Kurds live
In parts of Syria, Iraq, and Iran
As well as Kurdistan

Kurdish groups such as the KCK and PJAK
Seek democratic autonomy for Kurds
And democracies in Turkey, Iran and Syria

Aposim is a grassroots socialist movement
That promotes gender equality
Apo is the political founder of the PKK and PJAK

The female fighters of PJAK
Don't have families
Because this will weaken their commitment
To the organization

Thomas Morton
Host of this Vice documentary
Stays in a farmhouse

He headed up to meet the fighters
The PJAK division he met with
Fights for women's rights
Around the Iranian border

They tell Thomas
Women are being killed in Iran
It is a mental persecution of women
The PJAK representative says

It is about the right to democracy
Freedom, Equality, and education
The woman explains that
The Iranians use Sharia and Islam
For their own purposes

It is not true Islam according
To the PJAK representative
In true Islam there is equality and equity

Thomas
That really was priceless
Watching you line dance with them
Really funny
I think the women of PJAK
Got a kick out of it too

God bless the women of PJAK
Such beautiful smiles
Full of life
Standing up for women's rights

Soviet Afghan War
Matt Feb 2015
1 million Afghans and 15,000 Soviet conscripts died
Fought with American guns

Foreign nations had tried for centuries to conquer Afghanistan
In the 1970's it became a focus for the superpowers

To Moscow, a friendly Afghanistan was important

Afghanistan's new leader looked to the Soviet Union for support
The Soviet Union sent advisors to advance socialism

Land was taken from large owners
And handed to the peasants who worked it

Women were encouraged to stop wearing veils
And were put into literacy classes with men

The reforms were seen to threaten ancient customs
And the authority of the Mullahs

The Mullah says,
"God has decided who is rich and who is poor,
It can't be changed by communists."

Opponents of the reforms
Burned down schools and universities
Resistant grew throughout the country

Iranians joined in
Calling for a Jihad
Against the communists

The U.S. thought
That the Soviets might use the Afghan crisis
To move south
And seize the oil of the Persian Gulf

Meanwhile the Shah of Iran was overthrown
The U.S. lost its most important ally in the region
The U.S. considered the possibility of a Soviet controlled Iran

Carter sent the Mujahideen equipment,
Mostly communication equipment
They were mostly peasants

Recruits for the Jihad walked for days
Across the mountains to reach the fighting

Soviet trained Afghan army
Thousands of men deserted
Kabul requested Soviet troops

Afghan president met with Soviet leader

The Soviets feared the spread of Islamic fundamentalism
Into Afghanistan from Iran
The Soviets felt they had to send troops to stabilize the region
Moscow hoped they could complete their mission in weeks

Moscow had Amin assassinated
They didn't like him talking with the Americans

At the United Nations
The invasion of the Soviet Union was condemned

The Soviets began with large sweeps
Their approach was a disaster
Mujahideen remained in the villages
Guerilla fighters remained in the mountains

Reagan stepped up aid to the Mujahideen

The Mujahideen were spilt along tribal lines
They sometimes fought each other

A war fought with our gold
And their blood
According to CIA man

The U.S. viewed the conflict in Afghanistan as an internal
Cold War struggle
The U.S. provided assistance to anti-Soviet forces
Through the Pakistani intelligent services

The Red Army changed tactics
And took to the air
Soviet commandos
Dropped in by helicopters

Soviet aircraft bombing indiscriminantly
Village after village pummeled into oblivion
Then overrun by Soviet troops
The village men who refused to join the Afghan army were murdered

Thousands of civilians killed in Soviet atrocities

The mujahideen attacked Soviet convoys
2,000 Soviets died each year
The war seemed pointless to the Soviet soldiers

The mujahideen favored sabotage operations and assassinations
The Stinger missiles were effective for them as well

Reagan said,
"To watch the courageous Afghan freedom fighters
Battle modern arsenals with simple hand-held weapons is an inspiration to those who love freedom."

The war lasted almost a decade
The early foundations of al-Qaeda
Were allegedly built on relationships
And weaponry that came from billions
Of dollars in U.S. support for the Mujahideen

Scholars have argued that Bin laden was outside
Of CIA eyesight
And that there is no support for the claim
That the CIA funded Bin Laden

I cancelled online subscriptions

Dang, I can't even afford gas
At least I live in a nice home in America

Debt ridden America
There is no future for this country

Ah well
In the event of some big catastrophe
I'll either be in the mountains
Or on a golf course

I bought the electrolyte powder yesterday
And added it to my emergency bag

506th Easy Company
Of the 101st Airborne

The leg bag
Tore right off
They jumped lower than they should have been

Tracer bullets burning holes through the parachute
Tracers spraying around in the air
Firing in every direction

Paul "Buck" Rogers
Lands in a tree

Some worked their way down
Through a farm area
To a hedge row

Easy Company captured and destroyed
The guns at Brecourt Manor
Saving countless lives on Utah Beach

They helped to liberate the Dutch
Angels from the sky

The black and white footage is amazing
The gratitude and love the people show
To the men is wonderful

Finally free after four years
Of Occupation by the Germans

Battling from village to village
Along "Hell's Highway,"
Easy Company crossed Holland to the Rhine River

Nine men of Easy Company
Lost their lives
Battling in Holland

By the End of the Holland campaign,
Easy Company had been on the frontline
For more than 70 days

On Dec. 16, 1944
****** launched his offensive into the Ardennes

The Battle of the Bulge would become
The largest engagement
In the history
Of the U.S. Army
600,000 soldiers would fight in the battle

Easy Company was told to hold the perimeter of Bastogne
Surrounded by Germans
Branches knocked off of trees
Holes in the ground

Artillery attack
88s, mortars, rockets
They jumped into foxholes
He could see all the shells hitting from the foxhole

The wounded got relief from battle
Maybe a ticket home
If they died they were at peace

At Berchtesgaden
They uncovered artwork

In Zell Am Zee, Austria
Easy Company helped secure
The surrender of 25,000 German troops

On November 30, 1945
The 101st Airborne Division
Was inactivated

Day after Day
They fought together
Fought for each other
Knowing some would not return

This veteran said,
"I cherish the memories
Of a question my grandson asked me the other day.

'Grandpa, Were you a hero in the war?'
Grandpa said no
But I served in a company of heroes."

The Pathfinders
Were highly skilled in  land navigation
And map signals

They marked the right drop zones
With beacons and electronic signals

Three major drop zones

Planes hit by anti-aircraft fire

Some paratroopers hit the water and drowned in the river
The ones that landed had to make their way to the railroad

Thank you for your courage

Thank You John P. Baca
Matt Feb 2015
Thank you Mr. Baca
For your service

During the war you were in front of your troops

On Christmas Day, 1969
You came across a Vietnamese man
You noticed he was just sitting there
And you said "surrender" in Vietnamese
He showed pictures of his family

In 1990 this man was among the Vietnamese that Mr. Baca worked with
In building a clinic to help the people there

In your Medal of Honor video
You said you wore the medal
For those who have served
And know what combat is like

You took your helmet and jumped on a grenade
Saving the lives of your men

Thank you for your service
A terrible thing war is

Your actions help me to realize
That love for our fellow man
Is most important

Have Mercy On Me Lord
Matt Feb 2015
I'm sorry Lord
For the evil thoughts I had
Full of hatred

Forgive me Lord
A miserable sinner
Have mercy on me
And pardon me

I didn't mean those thoughts
These repeating cycles
Get frustrating at times

These sinful thoughts
I am afraid I may have again
Have mercy on me Lord
A sinner

Yes I fear judgement
And I pray that I will treat my neighbor with love
And love my neighbor as myself

I try to do what is right
Forgive me Jesus, a sinner
