Laut Anyelir*
Sebuah cerita pendek*

Apa kau masih ingat kisah tentang laut di belakang tempat kita tinggal? Laut—Ah, entah apa nama sebenarnya—Yang jelas, itu laut yang oleh paman dan para tetangga disebut sebagai Laut Anyelir. Kau mungkin lupa, sibuknya pekerjaan dan kewajibanmu jauh di seberang sana sepertinya tidak menyisakan tempat-tempat kecil dalam otak dan hatimu untuk mengingat dongeng muram macam itu. Tapi aku ingat, dan tak akan pernah lupa. Hamparan pantainya yang kita injak tiap sore setelah bersepeda selama 10 menit menuju Laut Anyelir, angin sepoinya yang samar-samar membisikkan gurauan dan terkadang kepedulianmu yang terlalu sering kau sembunyikan, dan bau asinnya yang busuk seperti air mata.

Kau mungkin  lupa mengapa Laut Anyelir disebut demikian.

Kau juga mungkin sudah lupa ombak kecil dan ketenangan Laut Anyelir kala malam yang terkadang berubah menjadi merah darah saat memantulkan bulan serta arak-arakan awan dan bintangnya.

Iya, pantulan bulan dan bintang yang lembut pada air Laut Anyelir pada saat tertentu berwarna merah,

Semburat merah dan bergelombang,

Seperti rangkaian puluhan bunga Anyelir merah yang dibuang ke laut lambangkan duka.

Biasanya, setelah terlihat berpuluh bercak-bercak merah melebur di Laut Anyelir, akan ada sebuah duka nestapa yang menyelimuti kita semua. Mereka bilang, laut bersedih dan melukai dirinya untuk hal-hal buruk yang tak lama akan datang. Menurutku itu kebetulan saja, mungkin hanya puluhan alga merah yang mekar atau ada pencemaran.

Tapi aku masih tak tahu mengapa semua hal itu selalu terjadi bertepatan,

Dan, sudahlah, laut itu memang cocok disebut sebagai Laut Anyelir. Aku tidak berlebihan seperti katamu biasanya.

Kau sangat suka cerita sedih, mungkin sedikit-sedikit masih dapat mengingat kisah sedih dari paman yang juga tak percaya soal pertanda Laut Anyelir, cerita soal kekasihnya yang hilang saat mereka berenang di pantai sore hari ketika kemarin malamnya, air laut berwarna merah.

Benar, hari ulang tahun mereka bertepatan, dan pernikahan untuk bulan depan di tanggal yang sama juga sudah direncanakan dengan baik. Kekasih paman sangat jago dalam berenang, ia mengajari paman yang penakut dengan gigih, sampai pada sore hari ulang tahun mereka, paman mengajaknya untuk berenang di Laut Anyelir sekali lagi,

Sebagai hadiah,

Untuk menunjukkan bagaimana paman mengamalkan segala ilmu yang diajarkannya, sebagai pertanda bahwa mereka dapat berenang bebas bersama, kapanpun. Mereka memakai pakaian renang sebelum mengenakan baju santai dan berbalap sepeda ke pantai seperti yang biasanya kita lakukan. mereka langsung berhamburan ke Laut Anyelir tanpa memperdulikan desas-desus tadi pagi bahwa kemarin malam airnya berubah warna. Kekasih paman sangat terkejut dan bangga melihat jerih payahnya selama ini terbayar. Berbagai macam gaya yang ia ajarkan telah dilakukan oleh paman, dan sekarang ia akan mencoba menyelam dengan melompat dari sebuah karang tepat di tengah laut. Paman mendakinya—Ia handal mendaki, dan sekarang handal berenang—Lalu menatap kekasihnya dengan rambut kepang dua yang melihatnya begitu bahagia. Ia melompat dengan indah, dan meskipun sedikit kesusahan untuk kembali menyeimbangkan dirinya dalam air, paman akhirnya muncul dengan wajah sumringah, memanggil serta mencari-cari kekasihnya.

Tapi ia tak ada di sana,
Ia tak ada dimanapun.

Itu kali terakhir paman melihat kekasihnya, melihatnya tersenyum, sebelum akhirnya ia menemukan pita merah rambutnya terselip diantara jemari kakinya.

Malam menjelang, semua warga dikerahkan untuk mencari kekasihnya, namun sampai bulan penuh terbangun di langit dan dilayani beribu bintang yang menyihir air laut menjadi kebun anyelir, kekasihnya masih tak dapat ditemukan.

Itulah sebabnya apabila mendengar laut berubah warna lagi kala malam, paman tak akan memperbolehkan kita untuk mendekati laut sampai dua hari ke depan.

Kau bukan saudaraku—Bukan saudara kandungku. Tapi aku menganggapmu lebih dari sekedar teman, bahkan lebih dari saudara kandung atau saudara angkat. Kau bukan saudaraku, tapi paman begitu peduli padamu seperti anaknya sendiri. Sama seperti bagaimana ia menyayangiku.

Dahulu kami hanya rajin mendengarmu, tetangga pindahan, memainkan gitar di kamarmu sendirian, melihatmu dari balkon lantai 2 rumah kayu kami sampai kau akhirnya sadar dan tidak pernah membuka tirai jendelamu lagi. Mungkin kau malu, tapi kami masih dapat mendengar sayup-sayup suara gitarmu. Namun setelahnya, paman justru hobi melemparkan pesawat-pesawat kertas yang berisi surat-surat kecil. Mereka kadang berisi gambar-gambar pemandangan alam—Salah satunya Laut Anyelir—Dan surat-surat itu sering tersangkut di tralis kamarmu. Akhirnya paman memberanikan diri dan menggandeng tanganku untuk segera mengetuk pintu rumahmu, usiaku belum beranjak belasan, dan aku hobi mengenakan celana pendek serta sandal karet yang mungkin tidak cukup sopan dipakai untuk memperkenalkan diri. Tapi kalian tidak peduli, dan menyambut kami dengan ramah—Paman menceritakan bagaimana ia menyukai musik-musik kecilmu, dan mengajak kalian untuk melihat-melihat keadaan sekitar sekaligus berkenalan dengan para warga,

Paman mengajak kalian ke Laut Anyelir,

Kalian menyukainya;

Dan paman mulai bercerita soal kisah Laut Anyelir yang menghantui, serta ketakutan-ketakutan warga. Tapi ia belum menceritakan kisahnya.

Namun kalian, sama seperti kami yang menghibur diri,
Tidak peduli, dan tidak takut akan semburat merah pertanda dari Laut Anyelir.
“Benar, itu mungkin hanya kebetulan!”
Sahut kalian.

Hampir dua tahun kita saling mengenal, dan pada hari ulang tahunmu, paman mengajak kita semua untuk berpiknik di pantai Laut Anyelir pada sebuah sore yang cerah. Aku memakan lebih dari 3 kue mangkuk, bahkan hampir menghabiskan jatahmu. Tapi tidak masalah, orangtuamu juga tidak menegurku. Kau sudah menghabiskan jatah klappertaartku, dan menyisakan hanya satu sendok teh.

Apa kau masih ingat betapa cantiknya Laut Anyelir saat matahari tenggelam? Seperti sebuah panggung sandiwara yang set nya sedang dipersiapkan saat-saat menuju lampu menggelap. Matahari sirna dan berganti dengan senyum bulan di atas sana, bintang-bintang kecil perlahan mulai di gantung dengan rapih,

Dan air laut yang biru gelap berubah menjadi lembayung,

Sebelum akhirnya mereka menderukan ombak, dan terlihat bercak-bercak merah pada tiap pantulan cahaya bintang. Sekilas terlihat seperti lukisan yang indah namun sakit. Kalian tidak takut, justru takjub melihat replika darah menggenang pada hamparan lautan luas dengan karang ditengahnya. Paman langsung menyuruh kita semua untuk bergegas membereskan keranjang piknik, dan berjalan pulang diiringi deru angin malam. Ia tak memperbolehkan kita mendekati pantai esok harinya.

Esok lusanya, kedua orangtuamu pergi ke kota untuk melapor pada atasannya, kau dititipkan pada paman. Mereka berjanji untuk pulang esok harinya,

Tapi mereka tidak pulang.
Mereka tidak kembali,
Dan kita masih menganggapnya sebagai sebuah kebetulan saja.
Kau bersedih, namun tidak menangis.

Aku yang sedikit lebih gemuk darimu memboncengmu dengan sepeda merahku dan mencoba untuk menghiburmu yang terus-terusan memeluk gitar di Laut Anyelir. Aku yakin saat itu aku pasti sangat menyebalkan; terus-terusan berbicara tanpa henti dan menarik lengan bajumu dengan erat sampai kau memarahiku karena takut akan sobek.

Tapi akhirnya aku berhasil membujukmu untuk memainkan gitarmu lagi, kau tersenyum sedikit,
Dan entah kenapa aku cukup yakin kau mulai tidak menyukaiku karena terlalu memaksa;
Namun menurutku itu sama sekali bukan masalah.

Kau mulai tinggal bersama paman dan aku sejak saat itu, dan menjadi kesayangannya. Ketika kita sudah cukup dewasa ia selalu membawamu saat bekerja di toko jam—Kau sangat handal dalam merakit jam serta membuat lagu-lagu untuk jam kantung automaton dengan kotak musik—dan aku ditinggalkan sendiri untuk mengurus pekerjaan rumah. Tapi tetap saja aku tak dapat menghilangkan kebiasaanku untuk menyeretmu bersepeda ke Laut Anyelir saat senggang dan tidak bekerja; kau akan memainkan gitarmu dan aku akan entah menulis surat untuk teman-temanku atau menggambar, dan terkadang menghujanimu dengan berbagai pertanyaan yang tak pernah kau jawab.

Begitu kita kembali, paman yang biasanya akan menggantikanmu untuk bercerita dan bercuap-cuap sampai makan malam dan kita pergi tidur.

Kau orang yang pendiam,
Dan aku yakin paman kesepian.
Orang yang kesepian terkadang banyak berbicara.

Seiring usiaku bertambah, cerita menyenangkan paman terkadang berubah menjadi cerita-cerita yang pedih dan menyayat hati. Kau tak mengatakannya, tapi aku dapat melihat dari matamu bahwa kau sangat menikmati mendengar cerita seperti itu. Aku tak menyukainya, tapi aku tak akan menyuruh paman untuk berhenti bercerita demikian. Kalian berdua membutuhkannya.

Saat itulah paman menceritakan kisah tentang dirinya dan kekasihnya saat kita akan menyelesaikan makan malam. Aku kembali tidur dihantui cerita mengenai laut yang melahap kekasihnya itu. Dalam mimpi, aku seolah dapat melihat ombak darah menerjang dan melahapku. Aku tidak ingin hal itu terjadi padaku, padamu, atau pada paman. Aku mulai menghindari Laut Anyelir pada saat itu.

Bunga Anyelir,
Dalam bahasa bunga, secara keseluruhan ia menunjukkan keindahan dan kasih yang lembut, seperti kasih ibu, kebanggaan, dan ketakjuban; namun kadangkala kita tidak memperhatikan arti masing-masing warnanya—
Anyelir merah muda berarti aku tak akan pernah melupakanmu,
Anyelir merah menunjukkan bahwa hatiku meradang untukmu,
Anyelir merah gelap merupakan pemberian untuk hati yang malang dan berduka.
Kurasa semua itu menggambarkan Laut Anyelir dengan tepat.

Setelah itu paman mulai makin sering bercerita soal kekasihnya yang hilang di Laut Anyelir. Aku tidak tahu mengapa, namun sore itu kau begitu ingin untuk pergi ke Laut Anyelir dengan gitarmu. Kali ini kau yang menggeretku menuju tempat yang selama beberapa hari kuhindari itu, kau tahu bagaimana aku menolak untuk pergi, kau yang biasanya tak ingin repot bahkan sampai menyiapkan sepedaku dan mengendarainya lebih dahulu.

Aku tak ingin kau pergi sendirian, aku mengikutimu. Kurasa tidak apa, tidak akan ada apapun hal buruk yang terjadi. Lagipula kita tidak akan berenang atau berencana untuk pergi jauh setelahnya.

Aku mengikutimu menuju Laut Anyelir. Kau duduk tanpa sepatah katapun, hanya menatapku. Dan mulai memainkan Sonata Terang Bulan oleh Beethoven dengan gitarmu saat matahari menjelma menjadi bulan. Saat itu barulah aku tersadar bahwa itu hari ulang tahunku, dan kau sengaja memainkannya untukku. Malam itu kita menghabiskan waktu cukup lama di tepi Laut Anyelir berbincang-bincang, meskipun aku lebih banyak berbicara daripadamu. Aku tidak membawa surat-suratku, jadi aku hanya bisa memainkan dan memelintir rambutmu sambil berkata-kata.

Kita menghabiskan waktu cukup lama di tepi Laut Anyelir, dan tidak menyadari bahwa air lautnya berubah menjadi merah. Aku terkejut dan berlari seperti anak anjing ketakutan ketika menyadarinya; kau berganti menarik lengan bajuku dan berkata bahwa tidak apa, bukan masalah. Aku, kau, dan paman akan terus bersama. Mungkin Laut Anyelir berubah merah bukan untuk kita namun warga pemukiman yang lain, pikirmu.

“Jangan berlebihan, kau manja, selalu bertanya, dan terlalu membesar-besarkan sesuatu.” Katamu, sekali lagi. Itu hal yang selalu keluar dari mulutmu.

Pintu rumah kuketuk, paman membukakan. Aku terkejut ketika tahu bahwa paman sudah menyiapkan banyak makanan kesukaanku termasuk klappertaart; kali ini aku tidak memperbolehkanmu untuk memakan klappertaartku. Ternyata ini rencana kalian berdua untuk membuat pesta kecil-kecilan di hari ulang tahunku, merangkap ulang tahun paman keesokan harinya.

Paman, tidak kusangka, ingin mengajak kita untuk berenang di Laut Anyelir esok. Ia ingin mengingat masa mudanya ketika menghabiskan banyak waktu berenang bersama kekasihnya di Laut Anyelir, dan kata paman, kita adalah pengganti terbaik kekasihnya yang belum kembali sampai sekarang.

Aku tidak ingin mengiyakannya, mengingat barusan kita melihat sendiri air laut berubah warna menjadi merah darah. Tapi aku tak ingin kau lagi-lagi mengucapkan bahwa aku manja dan berlebihan. Aku menyanggupi ajakan paman. Namun aku takkan berenang, aku tidak pernah belajar bagaimana caranya berenang, dan tidak mau ambil resiko meskipun aku percaya kalau kau dan paman akan mengajariku.

Esok pagi kita berangkat dengan sepeda. Kali ini paman memboncengku, dan kau membawa keranjang piknik yang sudah kusiapkan sejak subuh serta memanggul gitarmu seperti biasa.
Begitu tiba, kau dan paman langsung menyeburkan diri pada ombak biru Laut Anyelir dan berenang serta mengejar-ngejar satu sama lain. Aku duduk di tepian air, menggambar kalian yang begitu bahagia sampai akhirnya kalian keluar dari air untuk mengambil roti lapis dan botol minum. Setelah menghabiskan rotinya, paman berdiri dan kembali ke air sambil berkata lantang,

“Aku akan mencoba menyelam dari karang itu lagi.”
Tanpa menoleh ke arah kita.
“Jangan, paman. Kau sudah tua.”
“Sebaiknya tidak usah, paman. Hari makin siang.” Kau juga mencoba menghentikannya, tetapi paman tidak bergeming. Ia bahkan tak menatap kita dan terus berenang sampai ke tengah. Kau mencoba menyusulnya dengan segera, tapi sebelum kau sampai mendekati karang,

Paman sudah terjun menyelam.

Setelah tiga menit yang terasa lama sekali, kau menunggu ditengah lautan dan aku terus memanggil paman serta namamu untuk kembali ke tepian, paman tetap tidak muncul.

Kau menyelam, menyisir sampai ke tepi-tepi untuk mencari paman, namun hasilnya nihil, dan kau kembali padaku menggigil. Aku membalutkan handuk padamu, dan meninggalkanmu untuk kembali bersepeda dan memanggil warga yang tak sampai setengah jam sudah berbondong-bondong mengamankan Laut Anyelir dan mencari paman.

Malam hari datang,
Hari perlahan berganti,
Bulan demi bulan,
Tahun selanjutnya—
Paman masih belum kembali, dan kita tak memiliki kuburan untuknya.

Kita tinggal berdua di rumah itu, kau bekerja tiap pagi dan aku memasak serta mengurus rumah. Disela-sela cucianku yang menumpuk dan hari libur, kau rupanya tak dapat melepaskan kebiasaan kita untuk bersantai di Laut Anyelir yang sudah lama ingin kutinggalkan. Aku tak dapat menolak bila itu membuatmu senang dan merasa tenang.

Dan aku bersyukur,
Selama hampir setahun penuh, sama sekali aku tak melihat air Laut Anyelir berubah warna lagi menjelang malam. Memang beberapa hal buruk sesekali terjadi, namun aku sangat bersyukur karena aku tak melihat pertanda kebetulan itu dengan mata kepalaku sendiri.

Pada suatu hari kau memberiku kabar yang menggemparkan, ini pertamakalinya aku melihat senyuman lebar di wajahmu; kau terlihat semangat, bahagia, penuh kehidupan. Kulihat para pria-pria muda di sekitar sini juga sama bahagianya denganmu. Mereka bersemangat, dan mereka bangga akan adanya hal ini karena ini adalah waktu yang tepat untuk berkontribusi kepada negara. Katamu, tidak adil bila yang lain pergi dan berusaha jauh disana sedangkan kau hanya berada di sini, memandangi laut.

Kau memohon untuk kulepaskan menjadi sukarelawan perang, dan aku menolak.
Kau memohon, aku menolak,
Kau memohon, aku menolak,
Aku menolak, kau memohon.

Dan karena aku sepertinya selalu memberatkanmu, atas pertimbangan itu, aku ingin membuatmu lega dan bahagia sekali lagi—Aku akhirnya melepaskanmu untuk sementara, asal kau berjanji untuk kembali kapanpun kau diizinkan untuk kembali.

Kau tak tahu kapan, dan aku akan selalu menunggu.

Aku akan selalu berada di sini, dengan Laut Anyelir yang berubah warna, dan hantumu serta hantu paman
Gitarmu yang selalu kau rawat,
Untuk sementara waktu aku takkan bisa menarik ujung lengan bajumu,
Dan tak akan mendengarmu memanggilku manja dan berlebihan.

Kita tidak pergi ke Laut Anyelir sore itu, begitu pula esok harinya. Kita sibuk mempersiapkan segala hal yang kau butuhkan untuk pergi, aku memuaskan menarik ujung lengan bajumu, dan menyelipkan harmonika pemberian paman yang tidak pernah bisa kugunakan untukmu.

Ia akan lebih baik bila berada di tanganmu, dan ia akan menjadi pengingat agar kau pulang ke rumah, kembali padaku.

Kita tidak melihat ke Laut Anyelir sampai hari keberangkatanmu, di mana dengan sepeda kau akhirnya memboncengku untuk pergi ke pelabuhan. Kita tidak melihat Laut Anyelir, aku tak tahu apa airnya berubah warna atau tidak.

Hotel Saudade*
Sebuah cerita pendek*

“Ceritakan padaku,”
Aku yakin semua orang pernah mendengar perintah, atau permintaan itu; diikuti dengan waktu senyap dan getir setelah diminta untuk bercerita dan mencoba menata tutur sedemikian rupa. Menata tutur untuk menyanyikan, dan menuliskan (jika dalam surat,)  pengalaman, senda gurau, romansa, kehilangan,
Rindu, yang entah bagaimana caranya,
Sepi.

Beberapa mengakui bahwa setelah bercerita, mencurahkan isi hati, mereka merasa lega seolah ada beban yang terangkat. Tapi, cerita tidak hanya dapat diutarakan hanya dalam bentuk sepatah kata, sepanjang tangis, pun dalam tawa. Pada sebuah perjalananku (pertamakalinya aku berpergian sendiri, menggantikan ayahku untuk merancang dan menggambar iklan salah satu perusahaan kenalannya.) Aku bertemu seseorang yang memutarbalikkan pandanganku mengenai cerita pengalaman pribadi.
Aku tak tahu siapa dirinya,
Aku belum tahu siapa dirinya—
Namun pria ini mengaku bahwa ia tak memiliki cerita,
Cerita apapun.

Inilah cerita yang kupunya untukmu, cerita yang aneh,
Bukan aneh dalam artian mengerikan.
Malam itu kereta sampai terlalu larut, dan niatanku untuk mencari penginapan yang lebih dekat dengan pusat kota telah lenyap; aku sudah lelah. Sebenarnya aku dapat datang besok, tapi aku memilih untuk datang 2 hari lebih awal dari hari yang dijanjikan agar dapat bersantai.

Aku menjinjing tasku keluar stasiun dan membenarkan topiku, melihat kanan dan kiri dengan was-was sebelum bertanya pada orang-orang sekitar apakah ada penginapan di sekitar sini. Kau tahu betapa canggungnya aku bila bertanya ini dan itu, aku tak biasa berpergian sendiri! Namun karena keadaan mendesak, ya beginilah jadinya. Aku mendapat rujukan bahwa dengan berjalan kaki (sedikit jauh, tapi tak sejauh bila harus menjelajah malam atau menjadi angkutan untuk ke pusat kota) aku dapat sampai ke sebuah penginapan yang namanya terlalu puitis—Hujung Malam.
Apa maksudnya? Penghujung malam?
Apalah yang ada dalam sebuah nama, yang penting aku dapat tidur tenang malam ini, dan berganti penginapan keesokan harinya!

Dinginnya malam kala itu membuat mantel dan bajuku yang berlapis mejadi tidak berguna. Aku sedikit berlari melintasi trotoar yang digenangi beberapa kubangan air kecil, terlihat bak emas disinari pantulan lampu jalan. Sesekali menggosok lensa kacamata bulatku dengan sarung tangan hitam yang kukenakan. Ranting-ranting gemeretak, seolah merasakan juga dingin yang menusuk tulang. Setibanya di sana, aku tidak menyangka bahwa bangunan penginapan satu lantai ini terlihat lebih tua (tapi sangat terawat) dan lebih besar dari kelihatannya. Aku diantar ke kamarku yang terletak pada lorong yang tepat mengelilingi sebuah taman besar.

Setelah mempersilahkan keluar pegawai penginapan yang terlalu ramah bagiku, aku membuka pintu dan memperhatikan keadaan taman kala malam; didepan tiap kamar diletakkan dua buah kursi dan meja kecil. Sebuah pohon besar berdiri gagah di sudut taman, pada bagian tengahnya terdapat air mancur yang dikelilingi patung-patung pualam kecil; malaikat, anak-anak, dan bidadari tak berhati.

Aku mulai memperhatikan keadaan sekitar (yang tak biasanya kulakukan) dan barulah aku menyadari bahwa aku tidak sendirian.
Tidak, tak ada hantu.

Hanya ada sayup-sayup suara harmonika tak sumbang, yang dimainkan dengan tepat dan sedih pada pedihnya malam dingin.
Aku tahu lagu ini,
Greensleeves.
Lagu zaman Tudor itu, lagu orang-orang yang ditinggalkan.

Aku menoleh seolah digiring oleh angin yang baru saja berhembus, beberapa kamar kosong (kupikir itu kamar kosong, lampunya dindingnya tak menyala) duduk seorang pria berambut panjang, digelung rapi ke belakang, hanya mengenakan kemeja dan rompinya.

Ia ramping, namun pakaiannya tidak lebih besar dari tubuhnya dan justru terpasang pas pada tubuhnya. Rambut bagian depannya yang panjang dan tak ikut terikat rapi ke belakang berjatuhan, membingkai tulang pipinya yang terlihat jelas. Pria itu sibuk dengan alat musiknya dan memejamkan matanya tanpa menyadari kehadiranku. Aku juga sibuk, sibuk memperhatikannya bermain dan mengingat bagaimana Greensleeves selalu menyayat hatiku. Ini kali pertamanya aku mendengar lagu itu dimainkan pada harmonika.

Setelah ia menyelesaikan musiknya, aku menyapa dari kejauhan sambil memegangi gagang pintu kamarku,
“Greensleeves?”
Ia hanya menatap ke depan tanpa menoleh atau menjawab, duduk di kursi depan kamarnya dengan kaki kanan disila pada lutut kaki kirinya. Aku hanya dapat melihat hidungnya yang mancung dan matanya yang dibayangi gelap, ia terlihat cantik, dan sepi. Setelah menunggu sedikit lama dan masih tetap diabaikan, aku menghangatkan diriku di kamar. Aku akan berpindah penginapan besok siang.

Ternyata esok berkata lain.
Aku membuka pintu kamarku untuk sarapan dan mendapatinya lagi di tempatyang sama, seolah ia tidak beranjak semalam suntuk.
“Selamat pagi,” sapaku canggung.
“Kau selalu di sini?”
Ia tidak menjawab, hanya menatapku, dan saat itulah aku melihat matanya yang tidak lebih redup dari matahari senja di laut kala mendung.

Ia tidak menjawab, dan aku malah menggeret kursi dari depan salah satu kamar kosong untuk kutempatkan disebelahnya. Kami duduk bersebelahan dalam diam, hanya ditemani rintik hujan yang tak hentinya menghujat; ia mulai memainkan harmonikanya.

Aku beranjak untuk sarapan, dan memperpanjang masa sewa kamarku sampai beberapa hari ke depan.

Setelah aku kembali, ia masih tetap duduk disana, benar-benar tak berpindah dan terus memainkan harmonikanya. Aku tak dapat memperhatikannya lebih lama, aku harus beristirahat dan bersiap-siap untuk besok.

Hari berikutnya tidak banyak yang berubah, pagi masih tetap dirundung hujan dan pria itu masih duduk termenung menghadap taman. Aku bergegas untuk sarapan sebelum pergi ke kota dan menyempatkan diri untuk bertanya mengenai pria yang tak beranjak dari tempatnya. Ada yang bilang bahwa ia dulunya buronan, teman pemilik penginapan yang lalu diberi tempat tinggal disini. Yang lainnya mengatakan bahwa ia dahulu pelancong yang akhirnya memutuskan untuk tinggal dalam penginapan setelah diberi kamar oleh bapak pemilik penginapan yang terkesima olehnya.

Sepulang dari kota aku mengeringkan payungku yang basah kuyub dan mantel yang bagian depannya basah karena terkena air dari kereta kuda yang mendadak lewat didepanku. Bagian bawah gaunku penuh lumpur, dan aku tak tahu apa jadinya sepatuku ini. Aku tak ambil pusing dan kembali keluar kamar untuk sekali lagi mencari tahu tentangnya.
Entahlah, ada hal yang membuatku merasa tertarik. Mungkin karena lagu Tudor itu, mungkin karena ia sama sekali tidak berbicara dan beranjak dari kursi kecil itu. Hanya sesekali melepas ikatan rambutnya, dan membuka jam kantungnya.

Aku sekali lagi menduduki kursi yang kuletakkan di sebelahnya, dan langsung melontarkan pernyataan dan pertanyaan,
“Mereka bilang kau dulunya buronan,” ia terus memandangi jam kantungnya,
“Kenapa kau selalu duduk di kursi ini?”
Aku kira ia takkan menjawabnya, namun malah sebaliknya.
“Memangnya kau tahu kalau aku selalu di sini?”
“Karena aku selalu melihatmu di sini.”
“Itu hanya sebagian bukan keseluruhan.” Ia mengangkat bahunya. “Karena kau selalu melihatku duduk memandangi taman bukan berarti aku selalu melakukannya.”

Aku mengintip jam kantung yang di genggamannya, belum ia tutup. Jarum detiknya tak berjalan, begitu juga jarum panjang dan pendeknya. Namun derasnya hujan dan gema suaranya membuat kesan bahwa jam itu terus berjalan mengejar rindu. Ia mengutak-atik sedikit jamnya, dan jam itu mengeluarkan suara kotak musik. Tapi ini bukan jam kantung dengan kotak musik yang biasa kita lihat, jarum jamnya berputar secara terbalik.

“Boleh aku tahu siapa namamu?” aku mencoba mengajaknya berkenalan.
“Aku membuatmu teringat akan apa?”
“Apa? Entahlah.”
“Bukannya kau berlagak seolah mengenalku? Mengatakan aku selalu di sini.”
“Kau mengingatkanku pada senja di laut saat mendung.”
“Kalau begitu, namaku Laut. Aku selalu di sini seperti laut, kan? Ia tidak berpindah dari tempatnya.”

Percakapan kami terhenti di situ karena hujan makin deras dan aku harus kembali ke kamar untuk menyegerakan gambarku. Aku tidak ke kota lagi esok hari, dan menghabiskan waktu menggambar iklan itu di kursi kecil yang menghadap taman tanpa sepatah katapun, disamping orang yang mengakui dirinya sebagai Laut dan dibawah lindung hujan deras. Kami tidak berbicara pun berbincang, tapi aku menikmati kesepiannya seolah ada rindu yang belum dilunasi.
Tapi entah mengapa aku justru memulai pembicaraan,

“Ada yang bilang kau pelancong, apa kau mau bercerita sudah pergi ke mana saja?”
“Kau jarang berpergian?”
“Sangat.”
“Kau jarang berpergian, dan aku tak punya cerita.”
“Tak punya cerita?”
“Tak ada yang menarik untuk diceritakan. Tak akan ada yang merasakan sebuah cerita seperti penuturnya.”
Aku menyelesaikan gambarku, dan bersiap untuk menyetorkannya keesokan harinya.

Sore hari setelah aku kembali ke penginapan dengan keadaan yang sama, basah, terguyur hujan. Senja dalam hujan kembali ku habiskan bersamanya tanpa sepatah kata dan ia kembali memainkan nada-nada pada harmonikanya. Lagu yang sama dengan yang diputar oleh jam kantungnya. Lagu soal sunyinya malam ditengah laut, menunggu rintik dan bulan yang tak kunjung datang.

“Lagu apa itu? Sama seperti di jam yang kemarin.”
“Pesan Malam.”
“Aku belum pernah mendengarnya.”
“Aku yang membuatnya, wajar kau tidak tahu.”
“Sayang lagunya pendek, lagu yang indah.”
Ia hanya mengangguk,
“Aku akan pulang besok. Terima kasih telah menemaniku disini.”
Ia tak menjawab, dan terus memainkan harmonikanya tanpa menoleh. Seperti suara rintik hujan yang tak tentu, bingung akan apa yang ia tangisi, pria disebelahku tak memiliki cerita, tak bisa bercerita. Namun ia dapat berkisah, kisahnya tertuang pada lantunan nada dan lagu-lagu yang ia mainkan. Aku memejamkan mata, mendengarnya fasih menyihir suara menjadi sebuah fabel dan parabel, berharap dapat menyisihkan kisah-kisah yang tak diutarakan secara tersurat dan harfiah.

Aku undur diri untuk tidur lebih awal, dan menulis sebuah pesan dalam secarik kertas; lagunya mengingatkanku akan bagaimana caranya mengingat dan rindu. Aku harus pulang, tapi entah mengapa aku ingin kembali ke sini.

Dalam hening tidur malamku, ada sebuah lagu yang berulangkali dimainkan tanpa henti. Lagu di penghujung malam, lagu sunyi laut. Aku terbangun, dan dentingnya masih berputar dalam kepalaku.
Sayangnya aku harus kembali sebelum jam 12 esok hari, dan ketika terbangun, aku sayup-sayup sadar akan ketukan halus di pintu kamarku. Aku membukanya setelah memakai mantel, dan memejamkan mata pada keadaan yang sama sambil meluruskan gaun malamku. Hujan masih rintik, malam masih gelap, lampu-lampu menyala beberapa saja, dan hanyalah satu perbedaan; pria itu tak duduk pada kursi kecilnya.

Aku kembali masuk, linglung. Siapa yang tadi mengetuk pintu kamarku? Tanganku meraba gagang pintunya yang sudah menghitam dan saat itulah aku melihat sebuah jam kantung tergantung lesu pada lampu dinding didepan kamarku. Jam kantung yang selalu ia lihat, yang jarum jamnya berputar terbalik.

Tidurku tak kulanjutkan. Aku mengutak-atiknya sesperti yang ia lakukan tadi, dan menyadari bahwa bukan hanya ada satu lagu di situ, namun beberapa lagu pendek. Tiap lagu memiliki suasanya dan warna nada yang berbeda, membangkitkan berbagai macam bentuk ingatan dan kisah-kisah yang dapat kita bayangkan sendiri tanpa dipacu cerita dari siapapun. Hanya sebuah lagu, dan seuntai suasana.

Aku tak dapat terlelap lagi setelahnya. Aku membereskan barang-barangku dan beranjak untuk meninggalkan penginapan. Aku ingin berpamitan padanya dahulu, mengembalikan jam kantungnya, dan berterimakasih atas kisah-kisah yang ia ceritakan secara tersirat dalam senandung sepi. Tapi ia tak di sana, tidak pada kursi kecilnya. Tidak dengan harmonikanya, tidak menatap taman. Ia tak ada dimanapun untuk saat ini, dan aku mengitari taman serta koridor untuk mencari tanda-tanda kehadirannya untuk hasil yang nihil.

Ketika aku menuju serambi depan penginapan barulah aku melihatnya lagi, di ujung koridor, menatap kosong kearahku lalu tersenyum simpul. Senyum yang tak lama langsung sirna. Ia dibalut jas yang biasanya hanya ia selampirkan di kursi kecil dan ia mengurai rambutnya. Aku menyematkan secarik kertas kecil pada telapak tangan kiri beserta jam kantungnya, namun ia enggan menerima jam kantung yang kukembalikan.
“Simpan, dan jaga baik-baik.”
“Aku akan kembali.”
“Kembali kemana?”
“Ke tempat ini.”
“Untuk apa?”
“Bertemu denganmu. Lagi.”
“Bagaiamana kalau aku sudah pergi?”
“Aku akan tetap datang kesini.”
“Terserahmu.”
Ia meninggalkanku dalam remang-remang lorong kosong, sambil menggumam setelah melihat tulisan kecil di kertas yang kuberikan.
“Aku tidak paham puisi.”

Aku tak menoleh ke belakang saat ia berjalan melewatiku; yang kutahu, saat aku membalikkan badan untuk melihat apakah ia duduk di kursi kecil yang sama atau tidak, ia sudah tak ada, dimanapun. Bahkan tak ada suara pintu dibuka yang menandakan apabila ia memasuki kamarnya. Tidak ada lampu dinding didepan kamar yang menyala, hanya aku dan sunyi. Aku, sunyi, dan jam kantung yang putarannya terbalik mengindikasikan kisah masa lampau.
Sebagaimana ia memberi pesan di malam hari, aku mengirimkan secarik surat dalam bentuk sajak;

Untuk pesan malammu,
Yang tiap barisnya menari
Perih dalam benak,
Biarkan tanyaku dirundung rindu
Dan menjadi alasan
Untuk tertawa pada angan yang terlalu luluh
Mereka berhantu,
Dan akan kembali—
Sebagai sesayat serpih
Untuk melabuhkan kisah yang lain
Dalam seuntai surat malam

Memang tidak ada perlunya aku kembali, sayangnya lagu itu berputar-putar terus di kepalaku. Seolah nada-nadanya nyata mengirimkan pesan dan kisah yang berubah pada tiap bunyinya; fana, hanya dalam benak.

Mungkin cerita memang tidak selalu harus diutarakan secara tersurat begitu saja; akan banyak emosi yang terkikis habis, tidak tersalur secara utuh dalam penyampaiannya. Kisah yang disampaikan akan mati. Namun dalam lagu-lagu yang ia pahat abadi dalam jam itu, dan yang ia lantunkan dengan alat musiknya, ia menggiring hati yang tersesat dalam imaji untuk menguraikan kisah-kisah sendiri berdasarkan benak serta pedih. Dan tiap lembaran kisah itu,
Mereka membara,
Dalam kasih dan hidup yang belum pernah kita jalani,
Bahkan sekalipun.

Aku akan kembali, setelah membawa kidung-kidungnya pulang bersamaku. Bukan kembali pulang, namun kembali menemuinya di kemudian hari. Aku yakin, percaya, ia akan tetap disana—Menatap taman dan hujan. Entah bermimpi, entah bercerita dalam asa. Karena ia seperti laut, yang selalu disana dalam gelagap rindu, selalu ada dalam dahaga dan dan sejuknya malam. Juga seperti hujan, yang datang kala sepi dan tak kunjung pulang jua. Menemani dengan gesit suaranya, dalam tiap rintih fana.

Aku akan kembali,
Dan ia akan ada di sana.

He had been away. Just a few days, but long enough to feel coming home was necessary. He carried with him so many thoughts and plans, and the inevitable list had already formed itself. But the list was for Monday morning. He would enjoy now what he could of Sunday.

Everything can feel so different on a Sunday. Travel by train had been a relaxed affair for once, a hundred miles cross-country from the open skies of the Fens to the conurbations of South Yorkshire. Today, there was no urgency or deliberation. Passengers were families, groups of friends, sensible singles going home after the weekend away. No suits. He seemed the only one not fixated by a smart phone, tablet or computer. So he got to see the autumn skies, the mountain ranges of clouds, the vast fields, the still-harvesting. But his thoughts were full to the brim of traveling the previous November when together they had made a similar journey (though in reverse) under similar skies. They had escaped for two days one night into a time of being wholly together, inseparably together, joined in that joy of companionship that elated him to recall it. He was overcome with weakness in his body and a jolt of passion combined: to think of her quiet beauty, the tilt of her head, the brush of her hair against his cheek. He longed for her now to be in the seat opposite and to stroke the back of her calf with his foot, hold her small hand across the table, gaze and gaze again at her profile as she, always alert to every flicker of change, took in the passing landscape.

But these thoughts gradually subsided and he found himself recalling a poem he had commissioned. It was a text for a verse anthem, that so very English form beloved by cathedral and collegiate choral directors of the 16th C (and just that weekend he had been in such a building where this music had its home). He had been reading The Five Proofs for the Existence of God from the Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas, knowing this scholar to have been a cornerstone of the work of Umberto Eco, an author he admired. He had also set a poem that mentioned these Five Proofs, and had set this poem without knowing exactly what they were. He recalled its ending:

They sit by a lake where dead leaves
Float and apples lie on a table. She
ignores him and his folder of papers

but I found later the picture was called
‘In Love’, which coloured love sepia.
Later still, by the time I sat with you,

Watched your arm on the back of a chair
And your hand at rest while you told me
Of Aquinas and his proofs for the existence

Of God I realised love was not always
Sepia, that these hands held invisible
Keys, were pale because the mind was aflame.

He remembered then the challenge of reading Aquinas, this Dominican friar of the 13C. It had stretched him, and he thought of asking his wordsmith of thirty years, the mother of his daughters, to bring these arguments together in a poetic form for him to set to music. She had delivered such a poem and it took him some while to grasp it wholly. He wondered for a moment if he actually had grasped it. But there was this connection with the landscape he was passing through. She had mentioned this, and now he saw it for his own eyes. She had been to Ely for the day, to walk the length of the great Cathedral, to stare at and be amongst the visible past, the past of Aquinas. He remembered the first verse as only a composer can who has laboured over the scheme of words and rhythms:

The Argument from Motion

Everything in the world changes.
A meadow of skewbald horses grazes
Beneath a pair of flying swans
And the universe is different again.

And no sooner is potency reduced to act,
By a whisker’s twitch or a word,
A word, that potent gobbet of air
Than smiles and tears change places.

And everything has changed. Back
Go the tracks beyond seen convergence
To a great self-sufficient terminus
Which terminus we might call God.

And so it was in such a spirit of reflection that his journey passed. He had joined the Edinburgh express at Peterborough to travel north, and the landscape had subsided into a different caste, still rural, but different, the fields smaller, the horizon closer.

Alighting from the train in his home city on a Sunday afternoon the station and surrounding streets were quiet and the few people about were not walking purposefully, they strolled. He climbed the flights of stairs to his third floor studio, unlocked the door and immediately walked across the room to open the window. Seagulls were swooping and diving below him, feeding off the detritus of the previous night’s partying in the clubs and pubs that occupied the city centre, its main shopping area removed to a mall off kilter with the historic city and its public buildings. What shops there were stood empty, boarded up, permanently lease for sale.

Sitting at his desk he surveyed the paper trail of his work in progress. Once so organised, every sketch and plan properly labelled and paginated, he had regressed it seemed to filling pages of his favoured graph paper in a random fashion. Some idea for the probably distant future would find its way into the midst of present work, only (sometimes) a different ink showing this to be the case. Notes from a radio talk jostled with rhythmic abstracts. He realised this was perhaps indicative of his mental state, a state of transience, of uncertainty, a temporariness even.

He was probably too tired to work effectively now, just off the train, but the sense and the relative peacefulness that was Sunday was so seductive. He didn’t want to lose the potential this time afforded. This was why for so many years Sunday had often been such a productive day. If he went to meeting, if he cooked the tea, if he ironed the children’s school clothes for the week, there was this still space in the day. It represented a kind of ideal state in which to think and compose. Now these obligations were more flexible and different, Sunday had even more ‘still’ space, and it continued to cast its spell over him.

He put his latest sketches into a sequential form, editing on the computer then printing them out, listening acutely, wholly absorbed. Only a text message from his beloved (picking blackberries) brought him back to the time and day. There was a photo: a cluster of this dark, late summer fruit, ripe for picking framed against a tree and a white sky. Barely a week ago they had picked blackberries together with friends, children and dogs and he had watched her purposely pick this fruit without the awkwardness that so often accompanied bending over brambles. He wondered at her, constantly. How was this so? He imagined her now in her parents’ garden, a garden glowing in the late afternoon light, as she too would glow in that late-afternoon light . . . he bought himself back to the problem in hand. How to make the next move? There was a join to deal with. He was working with the seven metrics of traditional poetry as the basis for a rhythmic scheme. He was being tempted towards committing an idea to paper. He kept reminding himself of the music’s lie of the land, the effectiveness of it so far. It was still early days he thought to commit to something that would mark the piece out, produce a different quality, would declare the movement he was working on to be a certain shape.

And suddenly he was back on the train, looking at the passing landscape and the next verse of that Aquinas poem insisted itself upon him with its apt description and tantalising argument:

The Argument from Efficient Causality

We are crossing managed washlands.
Pochards so carefully coloured swim
Where cows ruminated last summer
In a landscape fruit of human agency.

And I think of the heavenly aboriginal
Agent of all our doings in this material
Playground of earth I can pick up,
Hold and crumble and cultivate

And air that is mine for the breathing
And the inhabited waters that cling
As if by magic to a sphere. What cause
Sustains the effects we live among?

For there is no smoke without fire
And as we sow, thus we reap. Nihil
Ex nihil, therefore something Is,
Some being we might call God.

So ‘nothing out of nothing, therefore something is’.  Outside in the city the Cathedral bells were ringing in Evensong. The sounds only audible on a Sunday when the traffic abated a little and the sounds in the street below were sporadic. He thought of going out into the Cathedral precinct and listening to the bells roll and rhythm their sequences, those Plain-Bob-Majors and Grand-Sire-Triples. But he knew that would further break the spell, the train of thought that lay about him.

He sketched the next section, confidently, and when he had finished felt he could do know more. There it was: a starting point for tomorrow. He could now go towards home, walk for a while in the park and enjoy the movements of the wind-tossed trees, the late roses, the geese on the lake. He would think about his various children in their various lives. He would think about the woman he loved, and would one day assuage what he knew was a loneliness he could not quench with any music, and though he tried daily with words, would not be assuaged.

Hair burned into beautiful submission
Face acrylically defined and chemically composed
Adornments meticulously chosen
Scent tested and approved
Smile practiced and performed
I am a porcelain doll
Sipping tea, at 6 am in the quiet of a sleepy-city apartment
Porcelain doll dainty wrists
Washing dishes, feeding cats
Folding linens, singing hymnals
Praying for peace and safety
Porcelain doll knitting sweaters
And folding paper cranes
Reading poems, setting tables
Wearing cardigans and pearls
Porcelain doll decorating cupcakes
Lighting scented candles
Watering potted plants and humming childhood lullabies
With my porcelain painted lipstick mouth


But lipstick can be dark
Eyes lined black as city alley ways
There is anger at injustice
The world outside the confines of a pastel doll house
It’s messy
It’s hard
It’s iron and concrete and coal
And I am too
Biking through the brick metropolis
Sunglasses and headphones
And anarchist literature
Evenings spent sprinting through the smog
Heartbeats synchronized to the crude drumming of the city
So hard to impress
I’m on the metro
Eyebrows structured and defined
And adorned with a calculated air of apathy
See me social justice march
Down highways with fervently entitled youths
See me armed against misogyny
Until my peers learn to better conceal it
See me smoking cigarillos
Drinking black coffee
Breathing the tainted air of the city that birthed me
And chanting manifestoes.

But my manifesto can be love
And love can conquer anger and fear
And hatred
Love can reconcile, it can erase timidity
And it can abolish resentment
Let it wash my face and take the need for vengeance from my spirit
Let it replace the thirst for power with thirst for truth.
I burn incense
And wear long skirts
Naked face and braless lazy days
Reading pacifism in the park
I walk far to find pure air to breathe
I sit and deconstruct my dichotomy
Under a wise and ancient tree
I trace myself backwards and forwards
I meditate on the paths I have traveled
I cry for the things I have seen
And for the things I have done
I contemplate transcendence
I drink wine and listen to folk music
On the terrace of my home
I bike barefoot to buy Indian takeout
And eat it in silence on the floor of an empty room

I think only of death
And resurrection
Of betrayal and redemption
Of opposites and compliments
And how to progress in knowing how divergent pieces of myself can learn to harmonize
I think about minimalism and materialism
Sentimentalism
And swords and pens
And how this race I run was rigged from the start
I think about blackberries
And the complexity of their literary and symbolic significance
I think about the number seven as I see it reoccurring in every possible sequence and equation
I think about God,
And TS Eliot
And If I dare disturb the universe
I think about porcelain dolls and ****** activists and ***** hippies
I think about war and peace and politics
About corruption and poverty and imperialism
About western ideals and conspiracy theories
And communism
I think about being radical,
And how both sides of this ideological war are defined by fear
And I think about love, as radical but defined by the absence of fear
The absolution of fear
And how I am fairly certain it is the answer
I think about the inevitability of art and war
how they create each other
how they destroy each other
inspire each other and annihilate each other
and how there is nothing that is innocent.
I think about pain and privilege
And stacked decks of cards
I think about dreams and nightmares
And prophesy.
I think about the darkness within me
Tendencies to lie and manipulate and steal
The darkness that I know could make me very great
But alone in the ashes of the world
I think of the curse of wealth and power
And I try to evaluate my motives
And the driving force of my ambition
But I don’t know.
I think about grace and all the things I don’t understand
And toil and fate and destiny
The shape of these things, their origins and culminations
And what this black box of secrets contains.
I think about so many things,
Until everything I was on the outside is gone.
My body is gone
My painted face and sculpted hair
My varnished nails and pierced ears
All my clothes and appendages and freckles are gone
My blood evaporated
My brain an invisible energy in the wind.
My home and street
And city
Are gone.
And even in such complete concentration
When it is only my essence and nothing else
And I transcend throughout my past and future
When I am spread thin
And stretched into the corners
When I fill the cracks and crevices
And melt into the pores of everything
And my spirit is awaked to a dimensionless reality
Even then,

It's long but an accurate depiction of how my brain works. Written this summer back when I had to much time to think about everything.

With nothing to see and nowhere to be,
With no one to be and nowhere to go:
Empty, like the meaning of the spring dew
Dissipating, hundreds of pieces, scattered
Individual voids waiting upon a cue
To become what they embody, fettered.
A field of unquiet quietness, occasionally
interrupted by a single, awful tone.
What existence is this exigence?
Unknowable, unspeakable, unending:
Pain is what it is.

The dew knows not why it's stepped on,
Ending its momentary nature
Only to crop up tomorrow and be none
The foot becoming again its berater.
And so it goes until the summer,
with the cruel months behind it.
The skull becomes and beckons
Back into nihil.
But there's too many things to see, places to be
Too much to be and too many places to go
For to be one is to be many and the dew tires.

A ship sails empty of reason,
captains fear the treasons.
Silent and smooth is how it'll fall
the cabin-boy shall take the bar.

Blood can be found on every street,
both death and life here meet.
Life is a walking misery,
pray god has blessed your destiny.

Outside the people's empty homes,
fathers, sons, left alone.
Big Brother dominates, he commands.
A billion voices in one hand.

The ocean itself is a burden,
your dreams will taunt the sugeons.
Twist well open the sails to Rome
if you flee the country, flee alone.

Between the alleys at this mass
the cross's shadow isn't cast.
Those booklets burn easy, use them well
let vain ideas fry in hell.

Our viscious masters do predict
the fall of  Troika and rise of  Six.
A crew who drains such futile ink
is sure to drown us down the sink.

Save me from the grim Tomorrows
full of hate deceit and sorrows.
Oh, it's not about tyranny,It's human kind.
Justice is never really blind.

Behind the money lies our pain,
into fields fall the rain.
With empty pockets walk the road,
a thousand stories left untold.

I hope one day it could end ,
just by cutting down his head.
They hunt down anyone not in line,
should we attempt this, is there time ?

Unfathomable ,
his hungry stomach calls for meat;
rotting, green, foul and sweet.
Rank food from the kitchens will be served,
for all the glory
he deserves.

I’ve whittled shelves into my body to try and bring an

order to things. All it did was make space.

So many shelves like staircases built in anger.

Winding forcefully

until they end right where I stand.


2. There are days I wash my face with vinegar

and soak my fists in horse *****. I use it to

conceal the musty smell of forgotten Bibles.


3. It’s while God is in my novels,

that I see my bedroom floor.

A junkyard of loose-leaf prayers,

my boots go out of their way to step on

dry crunchy ones.

I can hear the breaking, and it’s satisfying.

The acrid smell of fall

in my mouth,

I bite my lip just to feel the sting.


4. The phantom pain in my chest tastes like cotton

stuck to my teeth.


5. I am Leonid Rogozov in Antarctica, I’ve built my

staircase-shelves by cutting into myself,

only local-numbness needed.


6. No, my shelves are not staircases.

Shelves never extend forward. Just, upward.

A little too much like trees,

not permanent enough in the ground.


7. It all reduces to sawdust anyway, collected

on the bedroom floor.

I’ve been sweeping it up for 40 days now,

each day, a little more.

One day, the floor will be clean.


8. You say, “You are made of blessings.” I say, “No, I’m made of blood

and skeleton bones.”


9. I love You. You say you love me.

Some days, that’s enough.


10. Today, Just yellow-

brown pages and

nothing resembling gospels.


11. I wasn’t born, I just walked in

one quiet evening and started living


12. After every shelf I whittle I still ask,

14. I have layers and layers of papier-mâché skins you can thumb

through like pages.

You’ve peeled them away,

each becoming more raw and permanent.

The cleanliness worries me.

non-displaced, complete, oblique, transverse, comminuted, greenstick,

simple, linear, incomplete, compound, compacted, avulsion,

compression, stress, impacted, displaced, spiral and fatigue.

Believing in You makes me tired.

17. When it’s you resting on my tree-shelves,

I begin to see an end.

Books are the most efficient weapons in the world.
Standing upon a hill, I.
Under black & purple sunwheel.
Standing with sword in right hand, representing morality and righteousness.
Standing with mine own decapitated head in left hand, represting violent and sudden removal of Ego &&& it's prompt reclaimation.
Standing soaked in the blood of the wound as my sacramental rebirth offering and cleansing.
My own next level of Apotheosis.
Kept alive by sheer will & & & magicks.

Headless mystic standing akin to an Autosacrifical Kali Ma.

Standing as Ego.

Standing as Godhead.

The Artist Known as Nihil composes his
Signature cheeseburger, customized for you,
While waiting for his big break in Vegas

Hell, or something close to it,
Or worse;
For they would have longed for the warmth of fire -
To feel more than the sodden stink of their boots
And the thunder of Howitzers in their bones.
But they knew the victory was coming.

Eight days, that would be enough.
Letting death fall
In the half-silence of creeping gas
And the unrelenting barrage of mortar fire
Raining like demonic hail upon the enemy.
They knew that victory was coming.

So they walked, that's all it would take -
A stroll to be heroes.
But all the waiting, enduring, lasting out
To climb up onto the crater-filled sludge,

will it find itself
exactly where it should be

Ive 'nunquam magis sentiuntur solus* is Latin for
                                 I've never felt more alone.

I only learned Latin because
For some reason, I think that if I say things in the root of most languages,
I'll find most of the roots to these feelings.
But... Cogitationes strangulatus.
It's funny. Saying "thoughts stifle" in latin, merely sounds like cognitive strangles.
                                Not that it's any different, really.
It just sounds so much more like what I want it to be.
The English language has a hard time
Catching the depth of things
without sounding like it's trying too hard.
I want to be able to say something once, just once,
and be done with it.
To stop ruminating on you and find peace knowing that when I say
Reliquum aliud nihil est dicere
I don't just mean "there's nothing left to say."
I mean that *I've said everything I needed to say.

Days pass so fast beween those hills

Cast 'tween lands of firery ice

The clean produce with an iron strength,

a deadly aurora of graveyard stench.

Between the rosebuds, black as soot

lies my ****-bush pushing roots.

Free to amend, from time itself;

Id then be able to cure my self.
