SUN
Mary Anne Norton Aug 2020
SUN
Giant sun chalked
Boldly on ground
Inspired by a child
Another sun colored
Laboriously on paper
Created  by a child
Flashy sun painted
Proudly on canvas
Gifted by child
Tiny suns giant suns
Connected suns
Undone suns
Did the sun disappear
From us.

Library
Mary Anne Norton Aug 2020
My visiting the library
A shelvers' nightmare
Thumbed through books
Painstakingly sought out
Piles of books
Circled around the table
Waiting for their place
In numerical order
Oh what joy they brought
Such knowledge to me
My hands blackened
From the print
Tough decision to make
Which ones to leave behind
Perhaps a dog-eared page
Will lead me to my find

Life
Mary Anne Norton Aug 2020
Walks in the morning dew
Balloons held tightly
Warmth of sun
And wind tossed hair
A purring kitten
Gently near
Of course a book
Or even two
The wonder of children
Passing through
Gathering with family
In sickness and in health
Doing worship
With all you've got
Taking in the sad
With the glad
What will you
Take with you
And what will you
Leave behind
You shall not pass
This way again
So let the
Son shine through

Rain
Mary Anne Norton Aug 2020
Rain sounds stir within
My very being
Sometimes I'm scared
Like a lost child
Looking for their mother
Seeking shelter
As rain increases
So do my fears
Of yesteryear and today
Soft patters of rain.
Reminders of dancing
In the rain
Rain rain go away
Come again another day
Perhaps when I'm ready
To weather the storm.
In my heart

Words
Mary Anne Norton Aug 2020
Words are the heartbeat
Of the soul
The breath of
One's breathing
Soft whispers can heal
Angry words can destroy
One can build up
Or rip apart
Queens and kings can
Surely be born
Or paupers slowly
Left to die
We can build one
A kingdom of dignity
Or a dungeon
Of self disgust
Its up to how
We will use
The language of words

She would now tuck away

Waiting to be held

Gift of Poetry

Unwrap carefully
The contents are exposed
Bringing tears to the eyes
Or perhaps a smile
What one accepts
Another refuses
The giver is vulnerable
Giving openly of themselves

Borrowed Time
Mary Anne Norton Jul 2020
Tic Toc Tic Toc my clock
Rhythmically flows
Lud Thud Lud Thud
My heart beats
As I lay in bed wondering
In this pandemic
Will.I stay wakeful
In Kronos Time
Or breathe with another
Chance to change
Whatever time it is
I need to value the
Time I have
Appreciate all that
Has been given me
And thank the Lord

Words racing through
My scattered brain
Words lain askew
Amidst my other thoughts
They fly at me
When unprepared to pen
So I carry a napkin

And write. Lightly
Not to rip my thoughts
To many.pieces
Or leave ink spots
On my hands

Lifesong Repetition
Mary Anne Norton Jul 2020
Mary said be it done
According to your will
And the song
Of Life
Begun
Wrapping her baby
In swaddling clothes
Laying Him in a Manger
Animal breath and stench
From wet hay
Greeted the baby our King
Mary pondered this in her heart
Her child is growing
And He's preaching
While three days she's
Missing him but when found
Pondered this in her heart
Now in His thirties
His preaching is stronger
His Miracles are spreading
And she ponders this in her heart
In the garden you hear Him
Father your will be done
He is beaten and dies
And Mary remembers her
Be it done to me
Now her son's
Thy will be done
Both have echoed their
Yes to God
And the song lives
On and on

He ate His Last Supper
With His motley  crew
The Host a Shepard
Led to slaughter
Bread from a body
Baked with love
Wine from blood
To be out poured
They all shared this
In Holy Union
What one day would
Be Holy Communion
After supper the Heavenly Host
Would wash their tired
Stenchy worn feet
All for a kiss of Death
A blatant denial
The meal was over
They really weren't finished
To the garden he went
To continue to pray
As tears and blood
Flowed steadily to
Hallowed ground
His friends sleeping
Peacefully unknowing
What was ahead
Were they drunk
With the bitter taste of
Friendship on their lips
Or afraid to get up
On their fresh smelling feet
Let it be done in agony said
Snoring blocked out
What His friends
Should hear
But that didn't stop
A most brutal
Innocent death
Death became life
So we could live
Now and Forever
Amen I say Amen

My walking shirt
All.around spinnin
Flirting with the breeze
Though in public

They're moving in cars
I'm left on ground
They will pass me by
Without a thought
And if so its okay

For this moment in time
You can think
I'm just crazy
But I'm crazy in love
With Life
And I'm just

Mom' s Rosary
Mary Anne Norton Jul 2020
Her hands for many things
Embracing her children
Patching up boo boos
Carrying shopping bags
Cooking for others
Pushing her cart
Picking out vegetables
Folding her hands
So lovingly in prayer
The rosary she held
So tight in her hands
As the beads slipped gracefully
At each Hail  Mary
And now she's in Heaven
Where she can see Mary

Already on
Hiding snide remarks
Blowing kisses goodbye
Not fully seeing
Others all around
Or letting others
See you
Both of us scared
To show who we
Really were
Distance came often
The phone would stop
Its ringing
Walking to support
One another
Suddenly stopped
Hands washed thoroughly
Perhaps even till raw
Now it's quiet
Masks are all over
No side to side
Hands wrinkled
From germ-x

As masking takes place

Birds circling high
Ducks further in water
What once was near
Seems eons away

Since When
Mary Anne Norton Jul 2020
The soapy hands
The careful wash
No happy birtday song
Replaced by Glory Be to the Father
Carefully wash hands
While deep in thought
The longer the better
Prayed before Corona
Continuing to practice
Just noticed
Since when did  I stop
Glory Be to the Father
Did I get lax?
NOW.....
Is not the time !

Preach it
Mary Anne Norton Jul 2020
Heard sermon today
Good seed fallin on ground
Do we let path be trampled on
Or do we build a path
For growth
Got me to thinking
Where.have I planted
my seed
Or have I even planted
Is it too late to
Change my course
Can I permanently pull
Out weeds
Never meant to be sown
Can I start over
With Sonshine and rain
Cleansing me free
From all that was
To a new and
Glorious way
Let me scatter seeds
To my soul
To your garden
Of Eden
Where once was Life
If I crawl in the dust
Let me be buried
In You

Let me bury

So I can
Keep my dignity
