I was born with a Woolworth’s spoon in my mouth
not for me a silver stem and bowl
because my mother was a practical kind of soul
she fed us and she clothed us,
and she never forgot to love us,
then she taught us we were just as good
as the cutlery above us

Lark Awakened
Unpolished Ink Jul 2024
The lark awakened,
she took to the sky
between the pylons
singing sweetly,
her notes were clear,
fluid and beautiful
her tune unchanged,
since the world was young
she finished her song,
and flew off to find breakfast
unaware that nobody heard
after all,
she was just a small brown bird

Your head is the shed

Where the memories live

It's not right

That this thief in the night

Slowly takes you

And un-makes you

Until there is just

The rust

Dusty marks on the shelf

That once contained

Your sense of self!

Number 5
There was never a ladder to the loft,
we shinned up the airing cupboard
like working class monkeys,
treading on towels to reach the hatch,
you smacked the heating on the dent
until it hushed it’s steamy grumbles,
and the windows iced like Brentford nylon on the inside,
there was always that squeaky stair,
third from bottom
mum’s nark, and a wooden grass
the bain of many a teenaged drunk,
a kitchen way too small
for our big loud family to be contained
within its arms of yellow council brick,
there were dramas enough to fill a palace
except it had gnomes outside instead of soldiers,
and a phone in the hall
where everyone could see when you got dumped,
sixty years of births and deaths and fights
weddings and funerals, when neighbours closed their curtains
and the road bowed its head in respect for one of their own,
dogs, and fish, and hamsters, filled our infant lives,
once there was a parrot
a scarlet macaw on a pole which swore like a trooper
and lasted three days because it said f* in front of Nan,
banished forever to the Croydon jungle,
we put up with stuff, like people did,
perfection was never on the radar
because none of us knew what it looked like,
if it was a mythical beast, it belonged to another family
we lived loved and died there
and now it will be someone elses home
we reliquish our hold
maybe they will put in a ladder
like dad always meant to do
I lost my dad this morning

Dawn light,

The world took a break

Traffic stilled, just the dark rope of empty roads stretching for miles

Birds sang in the trees

No planes flew

People didn't rest

They sat in their houses and  didn't sleep, no matter how calm the world outside the window

We worried and wished and waited for it all to be over

For the planet to wake up

So that we could go to bed

Dig Deep
Poem potatoes,
I cannot dig them out
or present them at table
for the admiration of my greedy fellows,
the soil of me is raw just now
word tubers withered and sour
wrinkled old men faces survey me
with their squinted many sprouted eyes
and defy me to do better,
or produce a mealy crop of no particular flavour
a bitter harvest,
best to leave things fallow then
rest my growing ground
and see what fills the bucket next time round

that earthly care is merely air
a puff of wind blown through your hand

revealing faintest hopes of spring
this final song we learn to sing
in peace that only death can bring

Blink Of An Eye
Unpolished Ink Oct 2020
Do the stars look down and gently sigh
From their lofty home do they wonder why,
as we scurry around on our little blue ball
concerned about things that don't matter at all.
Do they weep when they see us again and again
smashing our world and the bits that remain.
The continuing heavens roll on and on
they were there before, and after we've gone
they will still exist to shed their light
with a fire that warms the eternal night.
Human kind is the blink of an eye
To those who look down and wonder why!
Excuse the phrase-Humanity is not always the 'Bertie Big *******' it thinks it is. There are bigger things so have a word with yourself mankind!

From the beginning

Lets get things straight

I'm not your nation

Or your state

I'm not the moon

Or anyone's world

You cannot claim me

So leave your tiny flag unfurled

You didn't mark me

Like a dog on post

Leaving your scent

So you can boast

She's my *****

Because I'm not

Use the brain cell

That you got

Think real hard

And you might see

That I am laying claim

To me!
word was territory

Short tall fat thin
What goes on above
Is anchored by roots beneath
Some want to be together

A living memory is hidden inside
The world needs trees
More than it needs

The Shapes Of Sleep
Unpolished Ink Oct 2020
The shapes of sleep

Day smoke that flows throughout our waking hours
released to tease and twist our darkling thoughts to landscapes, cities of the quiet mind

Shadow towers defined by nothing more than fancy and a little fact
the unassuming act of pressing day on night

Unconscious distant learning stoked by fear to feed and keep its belly still, and a little yearning when we need it

Our treasures taken from that mental box we keep

unlocked, explored and plundered deep

The grey and somewhat shop - worn curtains, covering the shapes of sleep
A thoughtscrape poem!
