Modern Day Kid
Hank Love Dec 2019
Modern day Kid

Wrote this about Billy the Kid about a little kid and his dad who play Billy and Sherriff Pat Garrett

A little Kid
With a little gun
Pulls the trigger back
Just for fun

He says "I'll make you famous
Don't you deny!
But an outlaw like me
Someday will die."

There is a man
Standing six feet tall
With a shiny old badge
And a hat of straw

Says "Now before you go Kid
Any last words to say?"
But his mama calls
And he rides away

A little girl
Lives down the street
With skin so dark
Whispers words so sweet

She says "I am a damsel
And I'm in distress"
He steals a kiss
And blushes red

Little Kid
With a little gun
Pulls the trigger back
Just for fun
He gets on his bike
His mama calls him in
The Little Kid rides again

Well I see him on the TV
He acts like a prophet
With the Bible in his hands
But he sounds too Hollywood
And I don't understand a word he says
He says the Good book says
To love thy neighbor
And I almost believed his lie
But the hurricanes are coming
And he won't let us in tonight

We all need someone to make a difference
We all need someone to shed some light
We all need someone to listen
And teach us all what's wrong from right
We all need someone to make a difference

Well he's been homeless
For ten long years
Carrying his cot through the crowd
He's got a son he doesn't know he has
And he's making someone upstairs proud
People usually go from rags to riches
But this time it's the other way around
He's waiting for the clouds to open
But the rain keeps coming down

We all need someone to make a difference
We all need someone to shed some light
We all need someone to listen
And teach us all what's wrong from right
We all need someone to make a difference

Well she's standing on the corner
For the fifth or sixth time today
She don't have much other choice
Cause she's still got bills to pay
The state came and took her son
It's been three years ago today
She says her knees always hurt her badly
But she still makes time to pray

We all need someone to make a difference
We all need someone to shed some light
We all need someone to listen
And teach us all what's wrong from right
We all need someone to make a difference

One More Minute
Hank Love May 2024
I wrote this not for myself personally, but for those who is forced to lose someone they love, I've seen people scream at God in hurt and anger and other things written in this song.

You were too young
When you spread your wings
I can hear voice
While I try to sleep

Telling me it's okay
Easier said than done
There's nothing left to say
But I've only just begun

Cause i could shake my fist
And ask God why
The old live too long
While the young always die
Yeah I could scream
Until my lungs gave out
I could tell a stranger what it's all about
Or i could cuss like a sailor
But what good would it do?
When all I want Yeah all I want
Is One more minute with you

They said you were better now
And I walked away
I hit my knees
But I didn't pray

Instead I punched the ground
Cause now it's the one holding you
Yeah it doesn't know you
Quite like I do

And I don't want to sleep at night
Cause my dreams always laugh at me

Cause i could shake my fist
And ask God why
The old live too long
While the young always die
Yeah I could scream
Until my lungs gave out
I could tell a stranger what it's all about
Or i could cuss like a sailor
But what good would it do?
When all I want Yeah all I want
Is One more minute with you

Yeah all I want
All I want

Is to shake my fist and ask God why
The old live too long
While the young always die
God I wonder why
Yeah I could scream
Until my lungs gave out
I could tell a stranger what it's all about
Or i could cuss like a sailor
But what good would it do?
When all I want Yeah all I want
Is One more minute with you

Yeah all I want
Is one more minute with you

The Hunt for a Thief
Hank Love Dec 2019
"Such a place for a thief!"
The patrolman cried.
"Just the place for a crook!"
The Thief replied;
"What a schnook!
So easily you were duped!
Indeed you are stuped!
Considering the time that you took!"

"Just  the place for a thief!
I've now said it twice.
Indeed you are sly!
Considering each day
That I passed you by!
Why I did not notice you more than I would have a fly!"
"You are no match! But I've made a mistake!
For I would be free
If that gate would unlatch!"
"Such a place for a crook!"
A deep breath he took.
"For one would be wise
If he knew where to look!
"I will be blunt, this is all in good fun!
For when the cat is away the mice will run!"
"Fun! Began the hunt
When you pulled such a stunt!"
"Yes, yes. I saw and I sprung. I started to run!
But perish the thought
For soon I to will be hung!"

Oh that Jack babe Has a knife dear
And he never leaves a trace
But have you seen his face dear
He looks like a monster
Well it looks like they have a case

You know when that Jack strikes
With his knife babe
There's never any time to scream
You could run, oh, but he'll be behind you
While you're praying that it's all a dream

There's An alleyway ahead huh huh
Monday morning uh huh
With a body and its quite a sight, eek!
And someone's creepin within the crowd
Could that someone be Jack with the knife

There's the docks huh huh
Down by the water don't you know
Some say he works there during the day
And there's a teacher that someone fingered
But that teacher drowned himself in the bay

Now did you hear about Mary Kelly
They found her body on the floor at home
Seems she went out
One night with her friends babe
But she never came home alone

And now the boss babe
Seems he got a letter
From the man
Yes Ol Jack himself

And that letter
Is stained in red dear
You could see it for yourself

I said Mary Kelly Annie Chapman
Look out for Mary Nichols
And Elizabeth Stride
Now that line forms on the right babe
Cause old Jack might strike tonight

Look out old Jack is back

I'd like to tell a story
Of a place that I once knew
That lived a loving family
As far as anybody knew.

They never touched a drink
And they hardly ever swore
Until Pa would come to think
There's gotta be something more

More to life,
More to this
More than the woman
Who gave birth to his kids

Well one night just after supper
Little Timmy wiped his hands
Off on his trousers
And that was where it would end.

Pa took a deep breath I remember well
And told those six people
Around that table
That they could all go to hell

Well you would think that it'd be over
That he had said all there was to say
He was nearly to the door
When little Jimmy started to pray.

"Lord give my mother patience
So she don't get too mad
And forgive my fathers behavior
Along with the six or seven drinks he's had.

Protect my sisters
And me and my brothers too
Cause Lord there ain't no telling
Just what he's about to do."

Now Ma told those little children
"Wash up and go upstairs."
Not one of them moved an inch
And Pa went to grab a switch
Wouldn't you know a car
Would show up there.

It was old pastor James
Who happened to
Be driving through that day.
"I wanted to stop by to tell you all
That we missed you in service today."

Now Pa was just about to speak
When a little voice came soft and sweet.
It was little Susie
Who grabbed the preachers arm
He stooped down to Susie's level
And aided to her charm.

"Pastor James, I have a question
And I know I don't understand,
But how do you get to Heaven
To that far away distant land?
If you have a map
Could you show me and my siblings near?
Cause I know it would be much better
Than another day living here.

How do you get to Heaven
On that bright and Godly shore
How do you walk on streets of Gold
Instead of this old rotten floor?

How do you get to Heaven
Pastor could you tell me please
We've had a life of hardship
And now it's time for a life of ease.

A Wanderer's Name
Hank Love Mar 2020
Hes put on so many faces
He looks in the mirror and
Doesn't recognize his own
Hes been to so many places
He doesn't feel welcome in his home

His footsteps tell a story
Of the life he Left behind
And the world ahead
Seems a mystery
Waiting for the adventure to find

Hes a drifter
Running from his past
But hes got no where to go
He's had a bad name but
You'll never find a better soul to know

He's said Goodbye
To the friends that liked him still
He's going from town to town
But doesn't even know if it's real

He said farewell
To the only thing he's known
A life of misery
Without a bed to call his own

Hes a drifter
Running from his past
But hes got no where to go
He's had a bad name but
You'll never find a better soul to know

Hes my brother
Hes my friend
Though I don't even know his name
And if you see him passing by
You'll be happy that he came

Hes a drifter
Running from his past
But hes got no where to go
He's had a bad name but
You'll never find a better soul to know

A Letter
Hank Love Apr 2021
Hey dad how's the place out there
Did you ever get the time
To fix mama's favorite chair?

Works been slow
So I don't know
If I'll ever afford the health care

Other than that
Its been going alright
The pain still hurts
And keeps me up sometimes at night

I had a little time
So I wanted to write this letter
To your heart from mine

I remember when
I was your little boy
And you were my best friend
Nothings really changed
I'm laughing now about how
I used to call you old
And you laughed and said I'd probably go
Before you ever do
How right you were i didn't have a clue

Hey dad the doctor just came in
He said its about the same
So I guess that's a win

They wanna see me back
Again next week
I'm just so tired of feeling so weak

Other than that
I guess I've been fine
I just feel bad to see my wife crying
All the time

I remember when
I was your little boy
And you were my best friend
Nothings really changed
I'm laughing now about how
I used to call you old
And you laughed and said I'd probably go
Before you ever do
How right you were i didn't have a clue

Dream a Dream of You
Hank Love Apr 2020
Allow me to dream a dream of you
For it is the only place
Where love is true.
And one day soon perhaps I'll find
A way to dream your dreams
And make them mine.

Allow me to dream a dream of you
A voice soft tho sweet
And eyes so blue.
And one day soon, perhaps we'll see
That love exists
In more than dreams.

Allow me to dream a dream of you
Of a touch so pure
And a heart so new.
And one day soon, perhaps we'll feel
Those emotions sweet
Are soon revealed.

The Judgement
Hank Love May 2024
Imagine standing there
Afraid and all alone
You can't phone a friend this time
No it looks like you're on your own

Two doors are in front of you
There's door one and door number two
Behind the first door you hear singing
In that Heavenly studio

The door next to it
Followed by a million different screams
Is that place of fire and brimstone
You hope you'll wake up from this dream

Between the two doors
The One with the shining light
And the other with
The excruciating reddened glow

Half a million things come to your mind
As you stand awaiting judgement
From the throne
For your soul

In the blink of an eye
A figure sits before you
And the impact
Causes you to hit your knees

Beside him on a table,
Sits a book wrapped in white
The one that keeps sccount
Of everything He's heard and seen.

To the right of him
Is a man wearing a crown and purple robes
Holding a ball in His hands we call the earth
But He holds it like a globe

You realize at this point
That it's none other
Than God the father
And God the son.

The one who knew you
Before you were born,
And He knows your sins
One by one.

Clearing His throat
And leaning towards you
You know this meeting
Has only just begun.

He says "I'll make this quick,
You've seen doors one and two.
But before I open either of them,
There's something I'll ask of you.

Do you deny the things
That you did on Earth?
Tell me, do you have
Any sort of excuse?

What can you possibly tell me
In your favor
Before I completely
Wash my hands of you?"

In that moment,
You feel ashamed.
He heare your thoughts,
And He sees your blame.

You remember all the stories
That you were told in Sunday school
About the man named Jesus
Who bled and died for you.

You don't realize it's a test
Or that the questions are rhetoric
So you sit there contemplating your answer
And slowly you start to panic.

Then you feel a different emotion.
One you haven't felt for the longest time
Something inside you almost glowing
That tells you you'll be fine.

You look up and you see God
Raising His brow from His seat.
You walk up to the throne
Filled with the holy spirit
"May I remind you that sin held me prisoner
But the blood of Jesus has set me free!"

Riddled
Hank Love Feb 2019
For yonder lady
This Poem is penned.
Whose eyes express brightly
Gazing upon such measure
Kept well in secrecy mind you
Twist the syllables in this rhyme.
Divinity-still a favorable token
Tho kind words remain unspoken
Its letters, the many letters
Which rally upon a readers ear
Does not merely comprehend that
The secret remains solely in the ink.
The sound uttered in the reading
Although spoken falsely
Not well kept close to heart
The riddle remains unkept
The truth an imaginative compensation
Forbids the reader,
And the poets,
To cease from trying
To rid the reader of
The riddle in the rhyme.

If I Could
Hank Love Jul 2021
If I could
I would pick
A garden just for you
The grass would match your eyes
And the violets would be so blue

If I could
I would walk a mile for you
Hoping just maybe
That you would walk with me two

And if I could give you the world
I wouldn't stop
Until the oceans all ran dry
And I would give my life
Just so you wouldn't have to cry
If I could

If I could
I would give you my eyes
So you would see how much
You mean to me

And if I could
I would give you my heart
So maybe then you'd see
That our love was meant to be

And if I could
I would collect all the rain
So it wouldn't pour on your parade
I would extinguish the sun
So all there would be was shade

If it was up to me
All the stars would spell out your name
That's how my world would be
And it would never be the same

And if I could give you the world
I wouldn't stop
Until the oceans all ran dry
And I would give my life
Just so you wouldn't have to cry
If I could

She Talks With Jesus
Hank Love Nov 2021
There was a house down the street
When I was a little boy
My father told me,
"Son you'll find God there"

I always thought that he lived in the clouds
Now I know what he meant
In the eyes of a lonely woman
Who had no family that came and went

But she talked with Jesus every day
Over coffee and water or tea
And he was there to hold her hand
When she could no longer see

Yeah she talked with Jesus every day
Until he took her home to the shore
Now she walks with Jesus every day
And she's never lonely anymore

I remember when she died
And we walked up the street
The family was there from miles around
And my father said she was very sweet

Poor woman caught fire one night
And the burns wouldn't go away
And I was too young to understand
Who the man was in her house that day

But she talked with Jesus every day
Over coffee and water or tea
And he was there to hold her hand
When she could no longer see

Yeah she talked with Jesus every day
Until he took her home to the shore
Now she walks with Jesus every day
And she's never lonely anymore

The Razors Edge
Hank Love Feb 2019
I peer through the world
With opened eyes and a complex mind.
There is a man much taller than I.
Long before the dawning light
He puts the razor to his face.
Every one experiences their first "cut"
My fathers words
echo throughout my mind,
"It is foolish to make
The same mistake twice
Expecting a different result."
Our joy of life forbids us
To be near the edge.
But you will not live a single day
If you dare not to make a single mistake.
We are but human.
We bleed, we share pain.
Without passion, we do not breathe.
On the Razors Edge, we learn to live.
Hank Love Oct 2020
After 3 long years I have finally finished this poem!

It was many a year ago

And even longer still,

In this lighthouse by the shore,

That I was sure I heard a noise,

A scream at my chamber door.

At that moment my soul grew weary,

My spirit naught but ash

Which had carcassed and fell upon the floor.

And my shadow still,

Which Surpassed me

Long ago in the forsaken days

Of Yore.

At that moment in my heart

There was a certain burning

Soon there became a

Constant Yearning

A desire that I had long

Forgot about before.

A series of utter bedlam

Which had never frightened me before.

Moments passed

With no mere word

Which was spoken

Though remained unheard.

As I kept to myself

Upon my many books of lore

As their voices broke the

Untaimed silence

And fell upon my ****** ear

"Shall I intrude

This proven evil?

Is it man, or is it devil

Which made this deafening

Shrill upon my door?

Beast or human who so

Dared to leave his darkened

Shadow upon the floor?"

At my door

There came a sudden tapping

With many voices overlapping

The voice of those

Who had been dead and gone

Long before

Once a knock, nothing more.

As fear burned within my eyes

From my chair

I was yet to rise

presently here

and no further

My soul I could pertain no longer

My faith doubted by the

Very thing which stood

Behind my entrance door.

"Sir," said I. "Forgive me

If I seem mistreating

But the simple fact is

Entrance indeed you are

Entreating."

I stood there my heart ever beating.

"Late is the night

I have no room to borrow.

Though indeed

You may return tomorrow.

Surely your departure

I must implore.

I admit I have not remained

A well kept host,

I am a man not visited my most.

I have my doubts

And I became engrossed

When I was sure I heard you

Knocking at my chamber door."

Twas here had I opened the door.

Somewhere deep into that darkness, lurking,

Was a beast who stood emerging,

Demanding acknowledgement that I’ve never once gave before.

And with that reason,

In my heart I felt such treason

Such betrayal have I never felt more!

“Are you are you man or are you beast?

Are you coward, or are you least?

I demand you reveal yourself to me!”

Slowly, ever slowly

This visitor, rude and lowly,

Came into the light wholly presenting himself to me!

The Horror! The unspeakable truth!

Had I been such a fool in my own youth!

For I tell you in God’s own truth,

That child was me in my own youth!

Here I slammed the door!

And this creature, never speaking,

Is still entreating entrance at my chamber door,

And his eyes have seen all things

From demons jeering,

And the light above him dreading,

To cast even his shadow upon the floor.

For in life I’m caught in dreaming,

And the scream shall poison these dreams forevermore!

Eavesdropping
Hank Love Nov 2020
I have always had a knack for eavesdropping.
Tho I am not in the least
Fancied by the distant conversation.
The corresponding voice
Of the majority's cry.
Place me in a situation,
Shrouding me
Corrupting my sense.
The constant laughter
By sounds unbearable
The foreign words I cannot understand
Tho do respect.
The gentle voice enchants me so
And am saddened by cries of woe
I look upon faces of different races
Precise to their own thoughts.
My father told me long ago
The curious eye does not go wanting
And the naked ear is evil.
Such curious nature
Tho strictly forbade.
I am bound by sand and sin
Not to wander aimlessly into that distance.
My thoughts indeed carry
By the countless tongue.
I hearken close to the strangers voice
To long for something to drown
Out my own noise.
In heed of advice only this.
For the unbirthed feeling to belong
And the fragment of admiration
Lay gently upon my ear.

Is This Love
Hank Love Aug 2022
With A thousand thoughts
She lies awake in bed
While I'm asleep having nightmares again
Is this love, oh is this love?

In distance we're only
Two inches apart
A thousand miles away
In both of our hearts
Is this love, oh is this love?

Is it the house that's a mess
Or something more
Is there something in the way
Between her and the door

Is this what they call love?
Is this what I've always been told?
Not everything is what it seems
And not all that glitters is gold
Is this what they call love?
Or has someone burned the page
No happy ending from what I can see
No more butterflies only rage
Is this love

Tell me Is this love?

I wonder what she would think
If I told her that I was on the brink
Of walking away
But I couldn't go back the way I came
Is this love, oh is this love

I wonder what she would say
If I told her that I feel the same way
But id tell her that I'm tired of pacing the floor
The flames still burning but it don't hurt anymore
Is this love, oh is this love

Is it the past
That's creeping up again?
I'm knocking at her door
But she won't let me in

Is this what they call love?
Is this what I've always been told?
Not everything is what it seems
And not all that glitters is gold
Is this what they call love?
Or has someone burned the page
No happy ending from what I can see
No more butterflies only rage
Is this love

One For All
Hank Love Dec 2021
I know when it's not worth the fight
We've had this talk a thousand times
Its time to read between between the lines
It's over girl it's over

It's nothing that anyone did
It's just something God forbid
And the emotions that kept themselves hid
Took over yeah they took over

I don't know why it's so hard
To say goodbye when we didn't even start
I know its not fair but it's too much to bear
When we break each other's hearts

Is it all for one
Or more one for all
And we've taken the fall
And we'll hit the ground sooner or later
Is it all for one
Are you the one for me
I guess in the end we'll see
When it comes to something that glitters
It's always one for all

I've read this over a thousand times
I thought by now I'd realize
There's nothing left to change our minds
It's over over

I never saw an end in sight
I never woke up crying in the night
I guess I'll try with all my might
To get through it through it

You're like a bad dream
And I make you wanna  scream
We're really no good for ourselves
We'll never be free when it's you and me
Holding the key to each others cells

Is it all for one
Or more one for all
And we've taken the fall
And we'll hit the ground sooner or later
Is it all for one
Are you the one for me
I guess in the end we'll see
When it comes to something that glitters
It's always one for all

When my father
Took me to a funeral
Echos in my ear
I still can hear
What he said

He said son theres no sense
Trying to wake the dead
The feelings in our hearts
Are better left unsaid
One day you'll be older
Soon you'll understand
Dont go chasing shadows
Trying to wake the dead"

Bobby loved Susan
But Susan hated Bobby
She hated that he loved her
Like it was some kind of hobby

Bobby bit a bullet
And his love for her  died with him
They were learning how to hate
And they were loving every minute

Perry went to prison
He got in a nasty habit
He was ripping off liquor stores
And the state wouldn't have it

Whitney said she'd wait for Perry
But Whitney was a cheater
She fell in love with Barry
Who always loved to beat her
They were both in love with pain
But they were hating every minute

Aaron was afraid
Cause Tina had a temper
He hated being alone with Tina
She broke his arm in November

Tinas at the center now
A neighbor called the cops
He looked at another woman
She punched him in the chops
Tina was is first love
And he hated being in it
He was afraid of being in love
And more afraid of being beaten

Some die in traffic
Others die by needles
And others die by suicide
Over something completely needless

Some will bite a bullet
Some may get the chair
Some might be afraid of dying
Some don't even care

They've pulled the rug
But I come back for more

I guess it's just my way
It's just who I am
You try to **** me
I don't give a ****

I'm a broken lamp
A shattered glass
Will you fix me, will you fix me
I'm a broken heart
A ***** soul
Will you fix me, will you fix me please

They've kicked me
When I'm down
I'm a lost boy
Waiting to be found

I don't pretend
That I don't deserve it
I don't wanna feel nothing
So I'd rather be hurt

I guess it's just my way
It's just who I am
You try to **** me

Will you fix me, will you fix me

But I wear it on my sleeve
Will you fix me
Will you fix me please

I moved to the city
When I was still a child
And people then
They knew something was wrong
They'd always stop and stare
And cut me down to size
Saying "the boys too different
He doesn't belong"

It was 7 years ago
When I came to know her
Someone who saw the man inside
The only one who could see
The man behind the myths
And who could hear the truth
Behind the lies

No one even knew
What I felt for her
No one cared enough
To ask me why
I think the thing
I loved about her most of all
Is how much better I saw myself
In someone elses eyes

One night a man came to my door
With a badge of silver in his hands
He showed me her picture
And he pointed his finger
He asked me why I did it
But no one ever knew about our plans

No one even knew
What I felt for her
No one cared enough
To ask me why
I think the thing
I loved about her most of all
Is how much better I saw myself
In someone elses eyes

We had plans to run away together
Go somewhere where we knew
We would not be hurt
We would Leave town and run away
And start a new life with another name
Until a jealous ex
Boyfriend found her first

No one even knew
What I felt for her
No one cared enough
To ask me why
I think the thing
I loved about her most of all
Is how much better I saw myself
In someone elses eyes

Daniel
Hank Love Jan 2020
He could almost see his mansion
While his home was on the road
Pulling at their pockets
He could almost feel
The rich mans gold
Most men called him crazy
As they threw him out of town
Now hes gone from rags to riches
Wearing his scars like a crown

His name is Daniel
And hes ahead of his time
At the front of the pack
Walking down the road
With a song in his heart
And empty hands
On his way to the promised land
Daniel hes not turning back

He was caught
With another mans wife
Wondering how he got there
Fearing for his life
Hes served from a silver platter
I would think he has it well
But where they got that head
I cannot begin to tell

His name is Daniel
And hes ahead of his time
At the front of the pack
Walking down the road
With a song in his heart
And empty hands
On his way to the promised land
Daniel hes not turning back

The King's Royal Fool
Hank Love May 2019
Once upon a time
In another song and rhyme
Lived the King's royal fool
Who couldn't seem to step in line

He was witty he was charming
Though he was mistook
Because while he tried to bring a smile
Others misplaced him for a schnook

He would sing his silly songs
He would play a little toot
And while others called him a brute
Their point was fairly moot

And they tossed him on the rocks
And they threw him to the dogs
He always made his way back
To do what he was taught

"Fool," said the King
As he gave a coin a fling
"Have you learned not a thing?
I pay you to sing!

Let this be a lesson
As you lie awake in bed
If I dont get my wishes
Its off with your head!"

To top it off
The King gave a scoff
He was always short tempered
Because he couldn't play Golf
But the fool had brushed it off

But he knew how to live
And he knew how to love
He was never looking down
Because his spirits were always above

He always tipped his hat
To the ladies and the Gents
"Bless you Gov," he said as he bowed
"Be sure to give the wife a kiss!"

I would be remiss
If I did not insist
That while I enjoyed his company
And though I loved his songs
He did one thing
I thought was very wrong
When he put his hand on a place
That didn't possibly belong

"Apologies Miss I wasn't
Trying to seem fresh!
Take it from me tales me mother
Always taught me best!"

But she sighed and she frowned
As she went about her way
"Give it a rest you blundering pest
I have no time to stop and play!"

So the moral of me rhyme
To the right person place and time
If you can't enjoy life
You better step in line

Because you can't love another
If you don't love yourself
Might as well keep your worries
Tucked away upon a shelf!

It's not that bad
Though it may seem cruel
If you can't see the beauty
Then you my friend are the fool!

Yore
Hank Love Feb 2019
The  Skies they were  Volcanic
The leaves so crisp so ashen
 The trees they were
 Bare and bitter
The trees Naked and brittle
It was thro the late November
During my most hindered year
Spent down by the lake of Merideth
Where lovers claim Heaven
By the banks of Harbor Bay
The frozen wave of Merideth
The chilling wind of Harbor Bay
Here once I found my soul
Thro the misted woods
I roamed alone
Through an alley of Oak
I found my soul
These were yond
In the days of Yore
On that day
my soul grew chilling
Spent abruptly by the shore
On that day in my soul
There was a yearning
Spent endlessly by the shore
In the innocent days of yore

Forgiven
Hank Love Apr 2020
One more empty promise
And another broken heart
One step from the edge
And being left out in the dark

Tripping down this
Path that's set for me
With ***** hands
Talking to someone
That I'm not sure is listening

But when prayers go up
Blessings come down
Sins are exchanged
For a robe and a crown
Wrongs are righted
And Children are United
With the one that sets us free
Yeah the things that make me human
Are washed away by the One who
Calls me Forgiven

I've got a gypsy soul
With no place to go
I never thought
That I'd even make it this far

But it's another step
And one more day
Looking for an answer
And trying to find my way to you Oh God

But when prayers go up
Blessings come down
Sins are exchanged
For a robe and a crown
Wrongs are righted
And Children are United
With the one that sets us free
Yeah the things that make me human
Are washed away by the One who
Calls me Forgiven

I know you're there you hear my cry
But I still can't help but wonder why
You've been behind me all this time

Prayers go up
Blessings come down
Sins are exchanged
For a robe and a crown
Wrongs are righted
And Children are United
With the one that sets us free
Yeah the things that make me human
Are washed away by the One who
Calls me Forgiven

In Life and Requiem
Hank Love Feb 2019
Take this life
I selflessly bestow
Upon the joy upon the sorrow
For dreams I have none to borrow
And time I have not to spare!
You are just, those who deem
And those that see or those that seem
That life is more than breath
And realms are more than dreams

Dreaming is the fashion
And they hold their own passion
And hope after all is the thing
But if hope has gone before
And journeyed long
In a timely matter passing
And the good days
Have surpassed me
In the forsaken days of Yore
Has life in its favor
Been a mere misadventure?
Then life my friends is the theme
And my thoughts are the thread
Which grasps the seams of
My own dreams.

Imagine (My Version)
Hank Love Aug 2021
Imagine there's no virus
It's easy it you try
There's no one wearing face masks
And no one ever dies

Imagine all the people
Living free without a care
Ah

Imagine there's no violence
Is it something you could see
In the streets there are no riots
But love for humanity

Imagine all the people
Who live and let live
Yeah

You may say I'm crazy
And it may be true
But if I can see a world beyond this
Then maybe one day so will you

Imagine there's no possessions
It's easier than it sounds
No one's killing just to have it
And the world keeps spinning round

Imagine all the people
Who finally learn to share
Ah

You may say I'm crazy
And it may be true
But if I can see a world beyond this
Then maybe one day so will you

A Dream
Hank Love Dec 2020
How childhood hour
Hath been a lasting dream!
And my soul still not waking
To the awaiting dawning beam!

An eternity spent
In shame and sorrow.
So that I could not gaze
Or dwell upon the morrow.

Dreams have been
Nothing more to me,
Than a brazen lie,
And more so a harsh reality.

For in that reality,
There were no hope to be found.
And with that commentary,
I share no common ground.

Though I have been happy
In a time before.
But this emotion
Was only found in dreams.

But in waking life,
I have felt no sadness more.
Nor have seen such light,
That o'er me will beam.
The message of this piece, is that the author finds that he only finds peace in dreaming. At the same time, he envies dreaming, because he would rather be happy while he is awake as well.

"If A Man's Home is His Castle" this is another musical number I wrote for "Mister Gates and the Return From Nowhere"

If a man's home is his castle
Then I am a king who's been dethroned
A man has his dreams in this world to dazzle
To carve his name into the stone

My life has always been merry
Well ordered, yes some might say
But I've reached the age where
Life has stopped giving
And instead has taken away

If a man's maids are his servants
To obey his each and every command
Then they all have turned into serpants
And I haven't a leg to stand

What other life do I know
But a life of morals and merit
What more may I teach to mold the breed
So one day they might inherit?

If a man's own wife is his queen
To rule each day by his side
Then why must the queen in her way intervene
And mistake my judgement for pride?

A man has dreams, goals, ambitions
To etch his name into time
To leave his mark into life's own arch
But the man is stripped from his prime

If a man's home is his castle
Then I am a king who's been dethroned
I've never once asked for this hassle
And it feels as though I must suffer alone

Of Tide and Sky
Hank Love Feb 2019
She rolls upon the sigh of Orion
Her voice Carries
thro brume and mist
These were days
when the tide was high
The waters pure
My Soul volcanic
As the scoriac valleys
Onwards strolled
While our destiny remained
Entwined with the stars
I said, "Gracefully she flies
Between the Goliath
Rivers of Spain
Our Salvation is Nigh
Encrusted through water
Our hope is restored."
And souls! The brave souls
Braced against the tide
Through the mid-December
(As we knew not
the month nor day)
Harbored there,
Beneath the air
Buried those poor souls
Between the shore and Bay
It was there
In the city by the shore
When it was spoken
But gave no token
In the days yond and fair
Many years and longer still
In the forsaken days of yore
That those men
Will not have died in vain
"Dust you were created
Through sand and sin
And shall you return
To dust again."

I enjoy the concept of writing using a feather quill, for the fact that some truth can be found in it. Like the bird who lost its feather, we do not know where it will nest, we only know where it's journey started. Much like our own story.

To All I Love
Hank Love Apr 2019
Thou hast occupied my soul, love
Where my thoughts did pine
Thou was all to me, love
And all I loved, was mine.
Thy beauty is to me
A delicate garden
And a shrine.
The blooms which did bloom
In the early days of June
Thro childhood hour
Had my days and all nights
Have been trances
As life so hums its somber tune
Love be the forbidden dance

The Reason
Hank Love Sep 2021
I was the tear
That fell upon that rock
And I could hear
Every word he spoke to God

Take this cup from me
It's not mine to drink
I've done nothing wrong
Father there must be some mistake

I was the reason
Why he died on Calvary
I was the reason
But he still chose to die for me
And every sin that I had made
Was there like black thick moss
I was the reason for the cross

I was  the nail
That pinned him to the tree
I held him there
As he died on Calvary

But I didn't use the hammer
I had no choice in this
It was the man in the Roman armor
But my shame was not dismissed

I was the reason
Why he died on Calvary
I was the reason
But he still chose to die for me
And every sin that I had made
Was there like black thick moss
I was the reason for the cross

I was the soldier
That hung him on the cross
It was not my decision
But I saw what it had cost

If I didn't have the nails
Then they would have my head
I killed an innocent man
It should have been me instead

I was the reason
Why he died on Calvary
I was the reason
But he still chose to die for me
And every sin that I had made
Was there like black thick moss
I was the reason for the cross

Doubtless you should
So easily forget!
We are that
What you cannot see!
How long shall life suffer you
Until you realize this!
We are the soft incantations
That which you place inside
The inner core of your mind!
Controlling your every thought
While you so soundly sleep!
We will change you.
You will not walk outside
For even during the daylight
We hold our shadow!
In you, we confide
Your every fear,
Towards that which you love most.
We are here, you see,
Tho we cannot so easily
Be summoned.
You have known us
Yet are afraid to call by name.
We, the soft voices
Daunting your every way of life.
The sole purpose
You may sleep in a well lit room.
We are your enemy
And when others have turned away,
We are the only friend you have.
We, are you.

Candle in the Wind
Hank Love Feb 2020
Yesterday about 60 years ago, a plane crashed in the snow in Iowa, taking the lives of three legends. Legends that many of you remember (no pun intended) Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P "Big Bopper" Richardson, also taking the life of their pilot Roger Peterson.  Holly, Valens, and Richardson had a major place in the heart of music, also in the hearts of millions. Let us not forget February 3, 1959, The Day The Music Died. Gone but never forgotten. They still live in the hearts of the millions of their fans. I wrote this version of Candle in the Wind specifically for this purpose and I have sent it to Sir Elton John to see if he will use it.

Goodbye Rock N Roll
Though we never
Held you at all
You were the tune
That placed itself
When our souls
Were torn apart
You called out to our youth
And you whispered
Into their brains
You set them on a stage
And you made them
Change their name

And it seems to me
You lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never dimming with the spotlight
When the new age came in
And I remember
When I heard you
When I was just a kid
Your candles  burned out long before
Your legend ever did

Many legends weve lost
All these years
Throughout the change
All our favorite superstars
But the song
In our hearts remain
I remember when you died
Oh the press they had to say
That you went down in February
With the others on that plane

And it seems to me
You lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never dimming with the spotlight
When the new age came in
And I remember
When I heard you
When I was just a kid
Your candles burned out long before
Your legend ever did

Elevator Talk
Hank Love Mar 2024
Well I looked in the mirror
Hoping to see a friendly face
He was a stranger like me
In an unfamiliar place

I said "hello how are you doing"
He said "I won't tell you no lies
I don't know who I am anymore"
And I started to cry

Cause I'm standing here
Talking to myself again
Turning to another stranger
Trying to find a friend
Good Lord I don't know what I'm doing
God knows I've tried
But it looks like more elevator talk
Between him and I

I saw that man again today
Standing in a puddle on a stormy day
I asked him what he's doing Why he's out in the rain
He said the drops on his face helps him hide the pain

Cause I'm standing here
Talking to myself again
Turning to another stranger
Trying to find a friend
Good Lord I don't know what I'm doing
God knows I've tried
But it looks like more elevator talk
Between him and I

Truth

Truth is something one will tell when they have no other options. Truth is something people run from until they turn around, only to find it nipping at their heels. In the end as we lay dead or dying, the truth dies with us.

They came and stepped on
Our sacred land
Took our way of life
Before they took our hand

And the huts and houses
That we built
They burned them down
And had our people killed

And to this day
We still don't understand
The wicked ways
Of the crooked man

They do not listen
They do not see
They ask no questions
To you or to me

But maybe one day
They will learn
That not all bridges
Must be burned

And all you white men
I've got to say
We were here first
When your ships drifted away

And still we will
Make our final stand
When you return
To your own native land

Dear World Leaders
Teach us from your point of view
Tell us all about how
You strive to make things new

We know you want what's best
For your people in your place
How is that any different
Than the rest of the human race?

We're not so different
We're not so uncivilized
Do you think there was a chance
That someone told us lies?

This one is for my brother's
On the opposite side of the line
But one human to another
Could we all put down our signs?

This one is for my sister's
Who are forced to hide their face
Giving their children away to soldiers
Taking them to an unfamiliar place

I never wanted this to happen
What have we become?
Where do we go from here
Have we all grown numb?

Put down your guns
Difuse your bombs
We're all daughters and sons
To the world we all belong
