My favorite aunt is dying.. cancer, quiet and consuming as a flame..

Seven short weeks ago she was easily doing an hour of step aerobics, unaware of this intruder, this murderer within. Now she's lifted from bed like a rag doll.

She is my mom, well, a near twin—only smaller, funnier, serpent sly, more heavenly childish, sapient with sweet attractive grace and modest pride.

I am in total awe of her. We're kindred spirits, two sillies among the dull and endlessly serious.

I feel her, see her, day by day, slipping away like the hastening angel of heaven foretold.

This is too big for me, too awful and too close.

I am struck helpless, nothing moves, I sit, hardly feeling, and watch her sleep. Death's cruel process suddenly made visible.

I silently rage at the loss of it—my loudest vehemence pointed to this ravenous, lurking enemy pursuing her inwardly like a swarm of deadly hornets accidentally composed.

40 and still stunningly beautiful, she lies surrounded by computers, iPads, phones, faxes, intercoms, notepads, friends and care-givers. Her life reduced to escaping pain and making arrangements for her soon to be orphaned children 4 and 6.

Fentanyl and other pain blockers are her nourishment and seem to work better in the daylight as lawyers garner powers of attorney, bankers conjure trusts and estate planners build foundations to protect small children from a mothers loss.

As if they could replace a single hug

It's a sad anniversary.
Summer in a corn field
learning about love.

Two kids coming of age
Under the afternoon sun.

She was warm, and wild, and willing,
I was young and hard and lean.

It wasn't exactly love
It was never meant to be.

We both went our own way,
living our own dreams.

But sometimes when I'm sleeping
you come back to me.

Through the corn fields of my mind,
We wander one more time.

You were warm, and wild, and willing,
I was young, and hard, and lean.

And we make love in memories,
we make love in dreams.

I wake and I wonder,
do you ever wonder of me?

Do you ever revisit the corn fields
of our childhood memories?

Do you ever wake and wonder,
Whatever became of me?

I wonder what became of you!
So this isn't about any one particular girl more an amalgam of girls I've crossed paths with. Who live on only in memories, some cherished, some fleeting.

Life is harsh
indeed very harsh:
I don't run away
in its some goodness
I believe and trust

Out of nowhere
a thought of you
will hit my mind,
like a poison dart.
I don't know what
triggers it.
Tonight, I think it's
the cold wind blowing
outside my window.
Or, it could be the
tangerine I just ate.
That sweet juice.
It doesn't last
though.
Gone in a flash.
Too small for a
lifetime together.
And I'm alone with
this bright orange pain,
vowing never to write
about you again.

Calico snakes crawl the
garden of our love.
You, in your gingham
dress and hair in braids,
bent over the radishes.

I, unshaven in my *****
Johnny Cash t-shirt.
Earth all over my
face.
I fell into your
firey ring, that's for
**** sure.

As soon as my guard comes
down, you and that drunken
pirate moon, and that mad
smiling snake burn
me every time.

I'm leaving the garden and
heading back to those
wild midnight alleys where I
know what's coming.
Nursery rhymes are just
metered horror stories.
And spring is the biggest
liar of them all.

My heart is a stained glass window, fragile as a Rose in May
refracting light from every angle, it holds life's leeway
Suffused with fragments of love,  I can be warm as night
filled with a sense of awe, when you tilt me to the light,
                                 I feel just right
My heart is a stained glass window, fragile as a Rose in May !
Fragmented beauty encased in bursting beams of afterglow
if I follow only yesterdays, life can soon appear surreal
Infused with an outside world that can often smite
I choose to live inside my own reflective colors,
                                           Always, in the light   !
Fragmented beauty encased in bursting beams of afterglow
My heart is a monument to all that I have lived and known
changing and bending with every curving path
it has been overused and "Inter-diffused" many times
like this mosaic piece of art I call "stained glass window "
                                I am a,   "Pièce de ré·sis·tance " ( a work of art)
My heart is a monument to all that I have lived and known
My heart is a stained glass window, fragile as a Rose in May
When I pray with it, it remembers to give thanks, in every way.
As she drinks nectar from a flower, sweetness from heaven falls like dew
anointed like gentle rain amidst sun showers, she appears as if on cue

Lifting her wings she lands on a Zinnia beneath a tinted sky of April blue
a flight of fancy fanning fast, she's a fabulous marvel of beauty, true on true

"I exist in two places, here and where you are." says the butterfly to me "
"I am you and you are I and that is why. " (pause)... we are both free !

She soars to heaven as if she were an angel of grace with wings of lace
and when I get there I will see that God and her have just changed place.

She drinks in the moment as if no one is watching her and so do I
and from now on I will live like her, until the day I die ...

I'll land on each soft place I find and know that I am not alone,
over by that sunny spot I'll sit and wait, until He finally calls me home.
life it can be hurtful it can break your heart
make a fool of you tear your world apart
everything around is just an empty space
and the world you knew can no longer face

happiness you had now as past you by
now as turned to sadness all you do is cry
time to change it round make your life worth while
to the world you knew that always made you smile
