When the doorbell rang,
I went to open it with a huge smile on my face,
My heart had its own melody,
Eagerness my song.
But, as soon as I opened the door,
The lyrics were messed up,
Discord in my heart,
Dismay  reflected on my face,
She was at the door bubbling with joy,
Showing off her diamond ring,
And her handsome fiance.
I saw the sun hide behind the clouds,
Heard my heart break,
But, with fake smiles I gushed over their engagement,
And invited them in.

When my granddaughter was four she refused to call me Dadi,
Insisting her daddy was my son.
Tears swelled in her eyes,
So I pacified her,
I told her I was her daddy's mother so she could call me Dadima.
So I am Dadima to my son's children,
And  Nanima to my daughter's  children.

My granny is sweet and kind,
Sometimes funny,
Set in her ways,
Very religious,
Always praying for our health wealth and safety,
An excellent cook,
And a great help to mum.
And all these years we have adjusted to her because of dad's philosophies.
Like she drinks tea in a saucer and slurps,
It's pretty annoying,
But dad says ,"Get used to the sound".
Or she forgets to close the toilet door,
Mix our tooth brushes,
Blames us for her misplaced glasses,
Dad says," You can't teach an old person new tricks".
She is so set in some of her ways that she refuses to budge,
Dad told us to treat granny like the centre table,
We will have to move around it,
It won't move around us.
We are one big happy family.
