Mary Prince
Jackie Mead Feb 2018
Mary Prince was born enslaved to loving parents who could not be saved.
When their original owner passed away Mary was sold
At the age of 12 she sailed away to the West Indies where she became enslaved as a companion to someone  similar in age.
For many years she was treated well but then the Master did pass away and the family could no longer afford to pay
Mary was sold three times more against her will.
Not everyone treated her with contempt some families treated her well.
But still the choice was taken away when each time she was sold or leased like a car to you and I, a commodity for someone white and rich to buy.
The last owner did not treat her well, and flogged her to let her know when he was not happy.
Beaten, abused and ***** too, she finally did meet a man to Marry
In 1828 Mary Prince, still enslaved,  determined her own fate
When visiting London with her Master from Antigua she ran away
Fled to the home of Thomas Pringle
Who helped her write her book
Mary Prince was 45 when she died, it is not known if her husband was still by her side
Or if she died single
Mary Prince is a woman to be admired
So take a look buy the book and teach her history to your children

I wonder, what would it be like to be lost and alone?

To find myself in a foreign country, completely alone.

A frightened young child, unable to speak.
Acting uneasy, shy, embarrassed and meek.

Wishing for someone to become my friend.
Wishing this nightmare, l am caught up in, please, come to an end.

Not knowing what happened to my Mum and Dad.
Locking myself away, hiding my sad :(

I can't imagine how it would be.
If I lost my sister whilst crossing the big wide sea.

Apart from my family; No knowledge of their safety or demise.
Waiting for information from an adult considered sagely wise.

I imagine it would be horrible and the toughest of times.
And imagine this happening today, in peacetime.

This is happening every day, bombs being dropped on buildings and homes,  in cities far away.

Driving families to leave their homes and all they know.
Wearing down their shoes until all that is left is a very thin sole.

Walking over mountains, with all they possess in a small backpack.
Losing loved ones along the way but keeping going, staying on track.

Determined to find peace and a new homeland.
Make friends, play football, maybe join a brass band.

Its not much to ask when you are nine or ten
Just wanting a home, loving parents and maybe a best friend.

Reading a book today called The Boy at the back of the class by Onali, Q, Rauf.
I found it a heart warming read, aimed at children but you should definitely read it.  It is charming, funny and sad.  Written from a child of 9 ¾ perspective if what is right and what is wrong when a young boy is brought into school and told to sit at the back of the class.  All he needs is friends to start opening up about his troubles.

Suzy the squirrel
Jackie Mead Oct 2020
Hi, my name is Suzy the Squirrel.
And by nature,  I should be a  solitary soul.
However, I live in woodlands surrounding the River Louse
And one of my best friends is Mr. Mouse

I like to forage at the hour when the day turns to night.
When the Moon is in the sky and shining so bright.
I am kept company by another friend, the Owl.
Owl deters nearby predators by the use of his talons and howl.

I am rusty red in colour and with a large bushy tail.
Which I use like a broom when I am preparing my countrystore for a sale.
When I forage, I collect items discarded by humans.
When they visit the countryside, I sell the items back to them, it’s a simple case of re-distribution.

You can read me about me in the Tales of Mr. Mouse
Mr. Mouse who lives with his wife and eleven children in a small house.
A house that sits in the woodlands surrounding the River Louse.

Mr. Mouse has many friends, including me.
I am Suzy the Squirrel, and I live mainly alone in the sanctuary of my large Oak tree.

It's as if an artist had taken its brush.
And painted the sky tonight.
Hung it up high for everyone to see.
And said there you go a present for you, from me!
Well thank you dear artist, whoever you maybe.

The Tale of Mark
Jackie Mead Jun 2019
There lived a young lad called Mark.
Who lived by himself, under a bridge in the Park.

By day he would wander around, alone.
He was lost and lonely with no place to call his own.

Mark, though, had a magic trick.
He could play a good tune with a couple of old cans and a pair of drumsticks.

By day Mark would set up his show.
Tin cans, his drumsticks, a few lights to create atmosphere, give a bright glow.

As the day turned to night and the sky began to turn red
Just as young children were going to bed.

Mark would play his tunes on his cans.
It had the sound of a large marching band.

People would gather around in large crowds.
They would gather in all weather, sun, rain, grey clouds.
People would listen, clap, sing a long, generally being very loud.

People started to leave money in a hat on the floor.
Mark was hoping one day to have enough to rent a place with his own front door.

For now, though Mark was happy as he was, by day he was still alone. This gave him time to think, maybe he would add a saxophone.
Perhaps a cymbal or two, maybe a harmonica strapped around his neck and a few bells attached to his shoe.

There was no end to Marks talent, his fame grew far and wide
Mark remained down to earth, not full of pride
Mark earned a small fortune, enough to buy somewhere with his own front door
Mark didn’t think he could ask for more.

Mark longed for someone to share it all with, by his side
When one day, out of the blue,
Mark was feeling lonely again, but now he had nothing to do
A young girl happened to knock on his door
She was carrying some samples of a carpet floor

Mark invited the young girl in
Bought all of her samples, which put the girl in a spin
Mark invited the girl to stay for a while
While he explored his purchase of carpet tile

They talked and they laughed until it was very late
Then Mark cooked them a meal, served on a plate

They devoured the meal swiftly and then had some fun
With the meringue, cream and floured bun

Now Mark has a young Wife and several small children by his side
Young Mark is grateful for his lot
And often puts on free gigs, for the homeless, in the Supermarket parking lot.

While I was out walking
Jackie Mead Feb 2019
While i was out walking the other day, heading South.
I met a man with a peculiarly large mouth.
It started at the bottom of his chin and went up to his eyes.
It gave him a look of permanent surprise.
I stayed a while, he was a friendly chap.
We walked and talked, had a lovely chat.
I bade him farewell and went on my way.
Whilst thinking to myself, tomorrow is another day.

While I was walking the very next day, heading West.
I met a lady dressed to impress.
Dressed in a Hat, skirt and jacket with a crispwhite shirt.
I decided to try my chat up skills and flirt.
"How do you do?" I said very politely.
She pursed her lips together very tightly.
Then she smiled and said "very well, thank you, have a nice day".
I thought to myself, tomorrow is another day, i raised my hat and went on my way.

While I was walking again one day, heading East.
I came across a Cat the size of a Beast.
The Cat was black and had big paws.
It was the largest Cat you ever saw.
He had ten whiskers at the side of his nose.
And was 6ft tall when he stood on his tip toes.
I thought he looked frightened, a little scared.
I asked him outright "dear fellow, what has you looking so ensnared?"
The Cat smiled a big grin like the one that got the cream.
Stood full height, claws extended and let rip a loud scream.
I didn't stay around to hear his reply.
I was frightened he would scratch out my eye.
I reminded myself, all is not lost tomorrow is another day.

While I was out walking the other day, heading North.
Giving thanks for living on this wondrous Earth.
I met a child skimming stones across the river.
I thought of my childhood and began to quiver.
I asked the child if i could have a go.
He gave me a stone and i gave it a throw.
It skimmed just once and then it flopped.
The boy and I laughed and laughed until we could not stop.
The boy taught me his art of skimming.
Until the boy declared his Mother was expecting his homecoming.
I thanked him for his time and went on my way.
Grateful that tomorrow would bring another day.
A bit of fun

If i could...

If i could be a tree
I would be a Weeping Willow
With deeply sunk roots, giving you strength
Billowing arms, of different length
I would welcome you to sit beneath me
I would be your pillow and your shade
As you find your peace by the stream, in this beautiful everglade

If I could be an Animal
I would be a Lion
Full of Pride
We would make a handsome pair
As we set up home in my lair
I would offer protection from hunters of all kinds
I would be your strength, your Master, your saviour from Mankind

If I could be a bird
I would be an Eagle, a bird of Prey
Master of the skies, of all I survey
I would offer you a seat beneath my wings
Sheltering you from the harmful rays of the Sun
As we glide and soar above the clouds, as one, in unison

If I could just be with you again for one day
I have so much to tell you, so much to say

Miss you **

Waves
Jackie Mead Jul 2018
Sat on the beach looking out to sea.
Memories in my mind, running free.

The blue sea ebbs and flows.
The white tips of the waves glow.
The sound of the wave is noisy.
The wind is blowing breezy.

The wave begins its inward journey.
Picking up speed, it becomes very loudly.
The wave begins to peak and crest.
The wave looks majestic, at is best.

Its journey nearly over, as it begins to fall.
Its reached its destination and crashes to the shore.

The wave once a thing of beauty is no more.
Its role in life is to live and breathe.
Show people beauty that brings you to your knees.

All day people and children play in the sea, swimminig and surfing freely.
But never take the sea for granted be sure you know the rules.
Being unsafe at the seaside is really not cool.

Lost in my memories of beaching days.
There is no better way to say.
I love you Dad and miss you so.
Thinking of my Dad today, left us 2 years ago today.
I am rembering fantastic trips to the beach, we would pack a picnic, fill the car with cricket bat, *****, surf boards, windbreak, it would be jammed full. Very often we didnt need boards, we would body surf or rock climb instead.
We would go rock pooling looking for ***** and fishes.
We would sometimes meet our cousins on the beach.
Great days, great memories.

The Swan
Jackie Mead Sep 2019
The Swan glides effortlessly across the River
The only sign, rings on the water that look as though the River shivers

Six cygnets by their side
Protecting their young, their eyes cast far and wide
Fear for their young makes them angry
Makes them shriek and shrill
Don’t get too close they will bite you with their bill

On a good day though, you will see them, displaying their feathers magnificently
Wings out wide and neck held high
As they prepare to leave the waters and take to the sky

The Swan so full of grace
You really do enhance our space.

Looking for a place to belong, somewhere to go

Looking for a place to land but not yet found

Looking down and wondering was I the best I could be
I hope so - this was written a few months back when at work, so guess these feelings were related to a bad work day.

Jackie Mead May 2018
Lifes tough, not all of us  know it
Some choose to fake it and not to show it.

Life throws many obstacles your way.
How you deal with them has a lot to say.

Some people bury their feelings deep.
To theirsleves they like to keep.
It hurts too much to talk about.
Their private people, not ones to shout.
This way is hurtful to yourself, parcelling up your feelings to put on a shelf.
Deal with them at a later date, "not now honey it's far too late".

Others wear their feelings on their sleeves.
Their feelings always on display.
They feel the hurt so deep this way.
Open to hurt by those you love and trust.
As they see in your eyes where your loyalty lies.
Unable to keep it to yourself, your feelings lie unwrapped upon the shelf.

Others like to scream and shout.
Throw their feelings all about.
Never wondering should they stop, freely telling anyone who will listen.
Their dreams and wishes laid out, on the shelf open and glistened.

So many challenges, sent our way, tests of our strengths, each test a different severity and length.
Some tests last a lifetime, others go as quickly as they come.
Each test designed to highlight, detect, strengthen a weakness or two.

You can accept these challenges, see the test through.
Learn from the results and maybe come out a better version of you.

Or you can run from them, never knowing the you that would show, never knowing how far you could go, what person you could be.

Everyone's different no two the same, no right or wrong way to be.
Someone needs to guard and protect you, if not you then let it be me.

Beautiful Day

The heat beats, upon the ground
I feel it is going to be a beautiful day
As I welcome the warmth of the Sun’s rays
The Sun's power; to illuminate all around
Flowers tilt their heads to the sky, in worship of the growth the Sun brings
Birds flying in the sky, rejoicing, sweetly sing
The warmth the Sun generates brings a smile to one’s eyes
It stays there a while, welcoming people passing by
As children play by the Sea, making new friends
Gardeners in their gardens, flowers, and plants they tend
Yesterday was the day of Rain
Today brings the Sun and Summer in a day, again
another Poem about the weather, for us Brits its a favourite topic as it is so changeable hour by hour, day by day

If once you were certain and now
there is doubt, don't walk away and
throw your love out.
Sit down, talk, shout do what it takes
to work it out
Display your emotions, whisper your

Make it clear that you are unhappy

I'm Me - Who are you?
Jackie Mead Apr 2018
I look at myself in the mirror and who is it I see?
I look once then twice and then start to realise.
That's me, who I see, reflecting back at me.
It's not the teenager me with spots and straggly hair.
It's not the twenty something who was beautiful without a care.
It's not the thirty something content with being a mum.
It's not the forty something who became a loving gran.
It's not even the fifty something who started to run for fun.
No this is Me, the culmination of all those wondrous times.
Etched upon my face some worry, some laughter lines.
As I look I recall the memories that have put them there.
Then I look, I really stare and then realise I do not care.
I am happy with what I see staring back at me,  after all  it is I and I is Me.
And I am happy being Me.

Are you happy with what you see?

Loyal and faithful, he will follow his Master until the Worlds End.
He runs, he lays, he sits on command.

Man’s Best Friend comes in all shapes and sizes
Some are bouncy, fun and full of surprises
Some are as fast as a streak of lightening
Some are quite big and to small children quite frightening
Some will gladly retrieve the ball, place it at your feet
Some will only obey your command, for a small treat

Man’s Best Friend, many types abound
Some have short bodies, with bellies that touch the ground
Some are so hairy you can’t see their eyes
Some are so small they look undersize
Some are large and quite clumsy
Some are yappy and some are grumpy

Man’s Best Friend work hard for their Masters
They carry out tasks that really matter
They listen for when the doorbell rings
Bark when the boiling kettle sings
They guide their Master when out for a walk
Sit obediently at your feet when you stop to talk

A lovely morning
Jackie Mead Mar 24
The air bites crisp this early part of the day.
Workers wrap up warm as they set out on their way.
As cyclists and joggers set the pace.
The sun has yet to grace us with its golden face.

My husband and I,
accompanied by two energetic grandchildren, whose boundless energy I envy.
Make our way to the large green fields, the children playing in a frenzy.

Here gulls, ducks and swans,
meet at the water’s edge.
Their squawks and calls,
loud and pleading to be fed.

First, the boys take the chance to play football between the rugby posts.
Their enthusiasm is to be the one that scores the most.
With grandad as the referee,
they tackle and run, laughing and shouting, that’s number “3!”

As I sit and observe from a bench, dogs run playfully and bark.
Sunday morning and families are making their way to the play park.

Families as large as four or five, walking, talking, laughing, toddlers ahead, racing on bikes and scooters.

Suddenly!
A long misguided
kick from one of our penalty shooters.

“Oh, no!”
The ball lands with a splash in the middle of the river.
Causing the water to ripple and shiver.

How will grandad get it back?
He walks
keenly following its track.

Luck is with us!
The wind changes course and blows the ball to the side.
Grandad bends and retrieves it for his boys with patience and great pride.

In the distance, trains chuff, chuff and toot, toot,
as they cross over the bridge.
I wonder where their start point was,
Scotland, London or maybe Cambridge?

Before we have reached our destination, the sun has broken through the clouds,
and the day warms.
People have increased in their numbers,
like bees multiplying in swarms.

Everyone is glad the sun has come out to play.
Jackets come off, sun cream goes on and families continue on their way.
It’s a perfectly leisurely and wonderful day.
A poem I crafted after a walk to the park yesterday with two of our grandboys. One 8 and one 5, full of boundless energy It was a wonderful start to the day.

Too many years I have been left behind.

I have perfected the art of an air kiss.

I use smoke and mirrors to disguise my existence.
I can’t be held by your arms, there is no resistance.

I walk through walls and shout ‘BOO’
If I wanted I could walk right through you!

I rattle tins and shatter glass.
I make drums of candlesticks made of brass.

You can not exorcise me from your home.
I am destined to remain here, free to roam.

I float, I twirl, I scream, I shout!
Please won’t someone let my spirit out!

Tick Tock, Tick Tock
Jackie Mead May 2020
The clock stood, tall and proud.
Its tick-tock, very loud.
The clock stood, long and thin.
Its swinging pendulum pointed like a pin.

The young boy came every day.
Stood on the stool, turned the key.
The boy climbed down from the stool.
Then left for the day to attend his school.

The clock stood tall and proud.
Its tick-tock very loud.
The clock stood long and thin.
The swinging pendulum pointed like a pin.

The hour approaching number four.
The boy ran through the front door.
Taking his place cross-legged on the floor.

Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
Sounded the old Grandfather clock.
Soon the clock would begin to chime
Counting to four in a rhyme.

The boy sat hypnotised watching the pendulum swing.
The boy waited and when it was time, he would start to sing.
1 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 4.
Someones knocking on the door.

It was all over in a beat.
The boy lept from the floor to his feet.

Over for another day, the boy had gone on his way.

The clock stood, tall and proud.
Its tick-tock, very loud.
The clock stood, long and thin.
Its swinging pendulum pointed like a pin.
This is random, came to me last night, i have never owned a grandfather clock nor have my parents but anyway decided to go with it and have a bit of fun.  I hope you enjoy

What should I say
Jackie Mead Mar 2018
When I think of you do I know what I want to say?
Do I get tongue tied, caught in a trap
Do I suddenly get in a flap?
I see you standing over there and want to tell you who I see
I can't find the words to speak my mind
I can't find the words for you and me
I'd like to say I love your eyes
At first glance you seem worldly wise
I'd like to say you have a **** face
Take me home to your place
But when I get close to you
The words I'd practiced in my head get muddled and instead
I whisper I love you quietly and go home alone to bed
Just playing around with words

Lazy Days
Jackie Mead Apr 2018
Who doesn’t love a lazy day, nothing particular to do, nowhere particular to go?
Make a drink, retire back to bed, pull the duvet up over your head, shut the world out for a little while.
Run a bath, bubbles high, sink your body in low, take a deep sigh.
Pyjamas on and it's only half-past four, nobody knocking at the door.
Music playing in the background, book in your hand, relaxing is easy but on the other hand!

Where is everyone, how come no one’s phoned to ask how I am?
Did I say what my plans were today?
Did I tell them all to stay away?
Think I’ll call them one at a time, have a nice long chat with them all, perhaps they’ll come around and visit for a while.
I’ve had a nice day I begin to smile, but that’s enough for a little while.
I do like being on my own promise, but sometimes it's ironic when we think it's what we want and then find out it's not :)

The Colour of Life

The Colour of Life

Red, Green, Yellow and Blue.
The colours that designate my love of you.
Add a dash of Purple too, you get the mixture of colours i see when i truly look at you.

You are the Red of Desire, one look and you send my pulse higher and higher.

You are the Green of envy i see when another looks your way.

You are the Yellow sun on an otherwise colourless day.

You are the Blue of a clear sky, following a stormy sea you truly anchor me.

You are the Purple of creativity, giving a wealth of love and devotion, calming me.

Rainy Days
Jackie Mead Mar 2019
How do you spend Rainy Days?
Does your mind fall into a foggy haze?
Do you go back to bed, snuggle under the duvet?
Does your partner make it a sweet duet?

Do you indulge yourself with a Hot chocolate, pile it high with marshmallows?
Sip it slowly, allow yourself to melt, mellow.

Do you settle down in front of the T. V.?
Watching reruns, making a little time for me?

OR

Do you embrace the rain on your face?
Put on your wellies, splash in puddles?
Not caring if your clothes get in a muddle.
Rejuvenating yourself with laughter?
Chasing rainbows and your happy ever after.

Make Rainy Days lots of fun.
Sunny Days follow and by their nature bring the Sun.

There once was a man from Pool
Who wanted the latest electronic tool
He searched high and low on new gadgets to go, his money got stole
He felt a right fool that man from Pool

Kiss me darling, he whispers in my ear
Everyone is looking and I want to make it clear
I want them to see that I am as in to you as you are to me
Together for ever for all eternity
Here hold your hand up to my heart leave it fused with mine until the day we depart.

Who was exceptionally bad at cleaning his teeth
When he opened his mouth
People ran South

Tea and Biscuits
Jackie Mead Apr 2019
Lying in bed
Tea by my side
Reading a book
Trying to hide

Duvet pulled up to my chin
Keep everyone out
Let nobody in

Unhappy with my body, how I look
One look in the mirror, was all it took
To send me back to my bed for the day
Where colours are not permitted and everything's grey

Tomorrow I will rise
Open my eyes
Feel blessed to I saw another sunrise

But for today I am happy
Just me and my bed
Tea and biscuits by my side keeping me watered and fed
Hey don't worry about me, I'm up and about
Just some days, well you know what I mean

Hope
Jackie Mead Aug 2018
Hope a feeling of expectation and desire,
That you will be the one to ignite the fire,
The fire deep within, that lights when you begin,
To smile at me across the room, and,
Makes my heart go boom, boom, boom.

Hope a feeling of trust,
That you will see that you are the object of my,
Lust, desire and anticipation, i
Hope that you return these feelings, and
All my dreamings will come true as you say "i love you" and we say "i do"

COVID19 sight unseen
Searching for the perfect host
Its slayer hygiene

Wash your hands for 20secs
Hot water on, count 20 real slow
Day 1 how many more

A deadly virus
Invisible to our eye
Keep safe, stay home

Lockdown soon begins
First YouTube, books videos
Now, when will it end

Now missing loved ones
Some temporary, some lost
Not knowing the end

Missing connections
Grandchildren are growing up
Thankful for our lot

Changes, how we live
Holidays, cancelled, postponed
Airlines hit the most

Economy slump
Everyone in a ba hum
Counting days to go

Tonight the Nation
Address social distancing
Changes will be made

Let us chat my friend
As a new normal begins
Online with a gin

Stay safe peeps, wherever you are and whatever you do.
Just my take in Haiku style, hope you enjoy

Knight of the Day
Jackie Mead Mar 2018
Do you remember Knights of old
Whose stories in tales were often told; of crusades to places in foreign lands
To fight for pots of gold and crosses
To give as presents to Princesses; in an attempt to win their hands.

They would joust for ma lady upon their horse.
Wave their white flag to start the course.
With lance in hand they'd fight their opponent.
Last one standing would be created; Knight of the Day and duly celebrated.

The Knight of the Day would be presented to His Majesty the King
The Knight of the Day would be awarded with a ring; to put on the hand of a Princess of his choice.

One day a young lad not yet Knighted stepped up to the mark.
Mounted his horse and waved his white flag.
A young lad intent on his own crusade.

He fought every Knighted opponent they sent his way.
And a jubilee celebrated his wins of the day.

He felt, the maiden will be mine,
It won't be long and fine clothes, food and wine will all be mine.

I'll sit at the top table with the King dutifully accept the diamond ring and the hand of his daughter in marriage.

We will arrive to church in a crystal carriage.
Everyone will be rejoicing in our marriage, flags will be waving, it will be very grand, perhaps even a big brass band.

We will be married Inside a very grand church with a very big steeple.
Our marriage will be blessed in front of all the people.

We will live long and prosper, I'll be a good husband, the Princess a good wife, we will have lots of children and a life of no strife.

We will be happy, loving and gay a family who knows how to play.
We will work and travel the Kingdom always by each others side.

We will be the envy of people far and wide.
Live in castles in the countryside.
Have our own horses and colours, and hold jousts in the grounds, looking for the next Knight to be found.

Alas it was not to be, the lad woke up it was all a dream.
He had fallen asleep on the beach, and was now covered in ice cream.

He woke with a start and declared I may not be Knight of the Day today; but one day I swear I will marry my Princess and I will give her a diamond ring, we will live a dream and have three children and fine things.

I will feel like a Knight tall and proud as i declare my love for my wife and that to me seems a fair prize.
It's late but I had to finish it, night night x
