Elephant seals
gross and flabby
ignorant of protocol
ponderously scratch.

Uniformed unicorns
importune
tame peacocks
wearing pink petticoats.

Fluted columns fade
at twilight
into the secrecy
of a passing thought.

Toy soldiers
on parade
fragile, glittering
lost.

We tend to assume
that freedom is a right, God's gift
But do you know the hours they slaved away,
the days spent patrolling borders,
all for our safety?

In wars, they'd drown in blood
One, two, three, slipping between the depths
Never to rise again,
fight again,
go home to their families and smile again

And we lie again,
to our naive little souls

Because what better and blissful ignorance
than to pretend the land we live on
did not come at the price of our soldiers backs,
Tears, willpower,

To say that we are truly
The land of the free
Based off a painting we looked at for a warm up in my Poets Workshop class. It was a happy family and home by a coast being held up by a group of soldiers with guns that were standing in a pool of blood. Our job was to interpret that painting and write about it.

Bright eyed,
And bushy tailed.
Happy yips,
And loved by all.
Oh, when did it go wrong?
Foot soldiers,
And flying boulders.
Screams and howls,
Along with angry hooting owls.
You run so far,
Following the East star,
Not knowing what to do.
Mother dead,
And Father crazy,
Who else is there?
To watch over you.

They stand in their uniforms straight and tall,
They are family members one and all.
They put on the uniforms, not for money, fame, or glory
But for the untold story.
The story of wanting to be free to raise their families.
A story of love, emotion, and religious devotion.
They are willing to take the stand, and become the sacrificial lamb.
They are the AMERICAN soldiers who believe in liberty
To be able to express yourself no matter what it may be.
They come from the farmlands, the mountains, the big cities
And the small towns, where every soldier imaginable can be found.
Just read the story of Sergeant ALVIN YORK who in the
First World War he had fought.
He was a conscientious objector who came from the upper
Farmlands of TENNESSEE – didn’t believe in war but wanted to be free.
They told him about the founding of AMERICA and what they had gone thru
And to make a decision of what he wanted to do.
He sat on the mountaintop staring across the land
Knowing he had to make a decision – he had to take a stand.
With the thought of the bible s verse “thou shall not **** “
And the other thought saying “freedom is not free”
This has been going on throughout history.
He and nine others captured more prisoners than they dared to count
This is what AMERICA is all about.

It’s a battlefield CHRISTMAS where soldiers stand guard
Not being with loved ones is so very hard.
But you had made a decision to defend the human rights
And if it must be –then you will stand and fight.
The day is calm and in the foxhole you lay
And in your mind- you begin to pray.
“DEAR GOD “this is the day of your birth
And so many families are feeling the hurt.
They are praying where ever they can
And all we ask is for your helping hand.
Let there be peace and not one shot fired
Because as soldiers we are so very tired.
We have seen death and destruction every where
And it seems like no one cares.
Why has the human heart become so cold?
When once before their families they would hold.!
There once was flairs bursting in air
Now its bombs – and destruction they bare.
Just for this one day – all heads should bow
And give thanks for what we may have now.
So “DEAR GOD”- this is my soldier’s prayer
And with the world, your love I will share.

they are soldiers fighting a war
across the ocean,
but their hearts are at home
seeking love and devotion.
love from our country,
devotion from their family.
that is all that they need.

they joined the military to
fight for what they believe
to defend from foes, seen and unseen
in their hearts we are the greatest nation
from the farmlands to the greatest plantations.

it does not matter if they're black or white
they will never give up freedoms fight.
we have people here from every nation
fighting for americas salvation

women have been the backbone in every war
death they've seen by the score.
the plains indian women who fought
alongside their men
it became a common trend.

joan of arc- who lifted the seige
in only nine days
the greatest role a woman could portray.

the uniform does not necessarilly
make her a soldier, but her heart
and strength that make her bolder.
bold enough to cover your back
and pick up all the slack

she will always be there in command
and pick up the rifle from the sand
she will do whatever she must
for in her you put your trust.

she is the female soldier, she stood her ground
of that we should all be proud.

give credit where credit is due
this is what i say to you.

In search of the yet unknown they roam,
Young faces carrying old burdens
They have seen too much.

Man the trenches, takes up arms, pick the nation
Up
Onto your shoulders, for that is what
Soldiers do.
They have seen too much, far beyond tears
His eyes blank, her hands trembling with repressed
Memories of somewhere far away.
He didn't mean to ****, though he meant
To do his duty.
She didn't mean to see the bodies, though she meant
To help her brothers.
No man left behind.
The blood felt sticky as it seeped through his uniform,
Carrying a fallen comrade,
Trying not to think of anything but the steps back to
Safety.

When I played Taps it was cold. November 1, because
The veterans all had work on Tuesday the 11th.
My heart and my salute to America's servicemen and women
Poured through my trumpet with as much
Solemnity and remembrance and love as I could muster.
24 notes that reminded me of my great-grandfather's flag,
The picture of my father in his dress whites,
Rows and rows and rows of white crosses at Arlington.
I cried, and I wasn't even ashamed of it.

To all who have served our country
To all who have sacrificed of their minds and bodies
To all who have lost lives and limbs and peace of mind to
Protect us
I salute you.

Boys forced into war
Helmets too big
Sliding down their ears

Boys forced into war
Forced to ****
Forced to destroy

What have we done
In these bombed streets
To our camouflaged boys

Trying to ****
To get rid
of them

But what did they do?
These boys and girls
Forced into camps
Forced to die

But what did we do?
To our young soldiers
Forced to ****
Innocent people

Forced to ****
Against their will
What have we done?
To those boys and girls

He was only 16,
                                                                He wanted to join,
he was too young to die,
he was old enough to fight,
the loss for his family,
for the good of his country,
he had so much to live for,
he had so much to die for,
that poor boy,*
                                                                that good boy.
I was going to enter a poetry competition in my college but I backed out. It had to be about war or conflict and this was what i came up with.
