The Princess and the Pauper
by Michael R. Burch

for Norman Kraeft in memory of his beloved wife June Kysilko Kraeft

Here was a woman bright, intent on life,
who did not flinch from Death, but caught his eye
and drew him, powerless, into her spell
of wanting her himself, so much the lie
that she was meant for him—obscene illusion!—
made him seem a monarch throned like God on high,
when he was less than nothing; when to die
meant many stultifying, pained embraces.

She shed her gown, undid the tangled laces
that tied her to the earth: then she was his.
Now all her erstwhile beauty he defaces
and yet she grows in hallowed loveliness—
her ghost beyond perfection—for to die
was to ascend. Now he begs, penniless.

You are beautiful from endless angles
Even with every flaw
Truth is so easy to see
Scars fill me with awe

I love you the way you look
You are light when skies are grey
Life appears brighter when you are around
Grows sunnier each day

Be the person you are right now
The only one I love
First thought on my morning mind
The face I'm dreaming of

Bound for the heavens
Have no doubt
Stars spell out your four-letter name
Before eyes they steadily burn out
So much blue all seeming the same

Some things are indescribable
Never seen such perfection
Heard beauty depends on who beholds
All hearts have different perception
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Having been brought up as Catholic,
I was always told that
God was a jealous god.
Jealous.
That there is no room
for other so-called "gods" in his churches,
and that there can be no room for another
in the hearts of his disciples, his children.
Children.
Now, a man of twenty-six years,
I ask, I wonder,
why do we invest our faith in a God
who is jealous, when we ourselves
do all we can to abolish
the jealousy in our own hearts?
Is God so unsure of himself that,
were we to merely consider another,
he would reject us and hold us in contempt?
And yet, he is described as "perfect."
Perfect.
That he need not work to improve himself,
though we here on Earth
do all that we can to come close
to purity and perfection.
As a man of only twenty-six years,
I can tell you with a certain conviction
that God is only a child -
a child in need of guidance, himself.
And I wonder still, more than ever, it seems,
why we look to God at all
and not to ourselves.

Contoured cheeks
Sculptured resurfaced shapes
Concealed to show everything
Pinched nose thin
Caterpillar lash tops flying away
Plump overdrawn lips
Shimmered cheeks
Highbrows your eyebrows
No pores or face fuzz allowed!
Packed on fake skin layers
Glass reflections
Perfect cat eyeliner
              Cats don’t wear eyeliner!
Who are you fake doll face?
Like stormtroopers
You look all the same
I used to know you
I think a version I saw once
But your craft makes you sell
Forces you to be someone else
You look so sad like a pretty
Doll with a fake smile
I love makeup just as much as the next crazy makeup collector. It’s just gone too far on social media. It’s hard to look at anymore so I just don’t.

But
I’m not looking for perfection
I’m not looking for a distraction
But you’re my intervention

I’m not really sweet
I don’t want to get in a relationship
But you made me

I’m sorry that i’m distant
That i’m not clingy
But i’m distracting myself to think

We base our alliance
But not on mere external elegance
Or favoured nature or trueness of heart
It's more than just preference that sets us apart
We were never intricated to stoop so low
To fall in love with bare figures mellow
Words cannot explain what this was, this is, this may be
For out there may be angels, or princesses, or Goddesses,
And yet all I ever want, oh she just read this line
And my, I can't have enough of that smile.

The Question
Just out of curiosity:
How do you picture your perfect life?

The Reply
I gave this a lot of thought last night
I guess in the most basic sense:

everyone I love is near me
If so, check that box next to "Perfect."  And in the most basic sense, then, I'm very happy for you...

art
decorative and illustrative;
a serene matter with the intention
of attracting.

a creative and careful imagination,
fascinating emotions read by our hearts,

without the use of words, it is meaningful;
for it portrays the aesthetic
of perfection.

you are an art.
i love staring at you.
