You have a voice.
That I admire so much.
It carries well and sounds
So clear and humble.

So I decided I should speak
And maybe it was a noise
Or some pretense that drew me in
But I waited for the
Pluck and note
Of the casual up and downs
Your tongue rhythms.

But it’s always at a cost
To have you,
That you speak to me empty
Like the endless droll
Of a receiver left unanswered.

step. one, two
one foot away from you
blink. three, four
just what you got in store?
stop. five, six
there's nothing i can't fix
breathe. seven, eight
but surely, you can wait?

think. nine, ten
you'll wait until when?
delaying chances is worse than not choosing at all

to walk your own path freely
with a creative heart or

to walk the well-trodden path strictly
with control and ambition

the former breeds love
releasing buried tension

the latter breeds fear
stimulating addiction and paranoia

there is nothing wrong
with a disdain for authority
break their rules
do things your way
just don’t get caught
you are no good to anybody
locked behind steel bars
or expelled from school
take their degrees and accolades
use it against them
make this world a little better

You are alive,
and that's enough for today.

Being alive is enough for today and for starting tomorrow!

"Mommy I have a question,
can we go outside?"

Under the cover of the cafe doorway
sun blared at our faces
wind knotted our hair.
I looked up at you
and in the eye
You looked down at me
noting the concern on my brow.
I asked,

"Are you and daddy going to breakup?"

Your answer then was something like,
"No honey! Not at all. Not for a very long time...
don't worry."

You smiled then
and at the time I never realized
how forced it might have been.

I guess perhaps
my memory is clouded
after 12 years come and gone.

I'm 20 now, and
much like you I'm older.
I think it's fair to say
it shows on both of us.

---------------------------------------

Today you sat me at the kitchen table.
We had just finished celebrating,
your new job. A new page in your life.
With our favorite unhealthy meal.

And dad is off on a business trip
after half a year unemployed.

That was when you broke it to me,
I couldn't read your face.

"I wanted to tell you before,
but you were having so much fun.
I recently told your dad,
I don't think I want to be married anymore."
Guys, I honestly don't know how to handle this.
