I wrote this poem after having a sunflower arrangement delivered to my mother, who is in an assisted living center and can’t have visitors due to the pandemic. This a poem about living with the fear, uncertainty, isolation, loneliness, alienation and depression created by the pandemic.

soon man will be gone:
fertilizer.

A kite floats
at the same place in the sky
where yesterday it floated ...
― Buson Yosa, loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch

Our life here on earth:
to what shall we compare it?
It is not like a rowboat
departing at daybreak,
leaving no trace of us in its wake?
― Takaha Shugyo, loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch

This World's Joy
(anonymous Middle English lyric, circa early 14th century AD)
loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch

Winter awakens all my care
as leafless trees grow bare.
For now my sighs are fraught
whenever it enters my thought:
regarding this world's joy,
how everything comes to naught.

Fowles in the Frith
(anonymous Middle English lyric, circa 13th-14th century AD)
loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch

The fowls in the forest,
the fishes in the flood
and I must go mad:
such sorrow I've had
for beasts of bone and blood!

Ech day me comëth tydinges thre
(anonymous Middle English lyric, circa the 13th to 14th century AD)
loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch

Each day I’m plagued by three doles,
These gargantuan weights on my soul:
First, that I must somehow exit this fen.
Second, because I cannot know when.
And yet it’s the third that torments me so,
Because I don't know where the hell I will go!

You Were My Death
by Paul Celan
loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch

You were my death;
I could hold you
when everything abandoned me―
even breath.

Epitaph for a Little Child Lost
by Michael R. Burch

I lived as best I could, and then I died.
Be careful where you step: the grave is wide.

Not Saying the World Revolves Around You, But ...
by Michael R. Burch

The day’s eyes were blue
until you appeared
and they wept at your beauty.

Imperfect Perfection
by Michael R. Burch

You’re too perfect for words―
a problem for a poet.

Stormfront
by Michael R. Burch

Our distance is frightening:
a distance like the abyss between heaven and earth
interrupted by bizarre and terrible lightning.

Splintering

An unbending tree
breaks easily.
―Lao Tzu, loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch

Autumn Conundrum
by by Michael R. Burch

It's not that every leaf must finally fall,
it's just that we can never catch them all.

Laughter’s Cry
by Michael R. Burch

Because life is a mystery, we laugh
and do not know the half.

Because death is a mystery, we cry
when one is gone, our numbering thrown awry.

Childless
by Michael R. Burch

How can she bear her grief?
Mightier than Atlas, she shoulders the weight
of one fallen star.

I Pray Tonight
by Michael R. Burch

I pray tonight
the starry light
might
surround you.

I pray
by day
that, come what may,
no dark thing confound you.

I pray ere the morrow
an end to your sorrow.
May angels' white chorales
sing, and astound you.

For a Little Child Lost, with Butterflies
by Michael R. Burch

Where does the butterfly go
when lightning rails, when thunder howls,
when hailstones scream, when winter scowls,
when storms compound dark frosts with snow?
Where does the butterfly go?

Where does the rose hide its bloom
when night descends oblique and chill
beyond the capacity of moonlight to fill?
When the only relief's a banked fire's glow,
where does the butterfly go?

And where shall the spirit flee
when life is harsh, too harsh to face,
and hope is lost without a trace?
Oh, when the light of life runs low,
where does the butterfly go?

Please tell me, dear child;
lead, oh, and I'll follow,
for surely, my Angel, you know ...

Neglect
by Michael R. Burch

What good are your tears?
They will not spare the dying their anguish.
What good is your concern
to a child sick of living, waiting to perish?

What good, the warm benevolence of tears
without action?
What help, the eloquence of prayers,
or a pleasant benediction?

Before this day is gone,
how many more will die
with bellies swollen, wasted limbs,
and eyes too parched to cry?

I fear for our souls
as I hear the faint lament
of their souls departing ...
mournful, and distant.

How pitiful our "effort,"
yet how fatal its effect.
If they died, then surely we killed them,
if only with neglect.

The Octopi Jars
by Michael R. Burch

Long-vacant eyes
now lodged in clear glass,
a-swim with pale arms
as delicate as angels'...

you are beyond all hope
of salvage now...
and yet I would pause,
no fear!,
to once touch
your arcane beaks...

I, more alien than you
to this imprismed world,
notice, most of all,
the scratches on the inside surfaces
of your hermetic cells ...

and I remember documentaries
of albino Houdinis
slipping like wraiths
over the walls of shipboard aquariums,
slipping down decks'
brine-lubricated planks,
spilling jubilantly into the dark sea,
parachuting through clouds of pallid ammonia...

and I know now in life you were unlike me:
your imprisonment was never voluntary.

we did not Dye in vain!
by Michael R. Burch

from “songs of the sea snails”

though i’m just a slimy crawler,
my lineage is proud:
my forebears gave their lives
(oh, let the trumps blare loud!)
so purple-mantled Royals
might stand out in a crowd.

i salute you, fellow loyals,
who labor without scruple
as your incomes fall
while deficits quadruple
to swaddle unjust Lords
in bright imperial purple!

Notes: In ancient times the purple dye produced from the secretions of purpura mollusks (sea snails) was known as “Tyrian purple,” “royal purple” and “imperial purple.” It was greatly prized in antiquity, and was very expensive according to the historian Theopompus: “Purple for dyes fetched its weight in silver at Colophon.” Thus, purple-dyed fabrics became status symbols, and laws often prevented commoners from possessing them. The production of Tyrian purple was tightly controlled in Byzantium, where the imperial court restricted its use to the coloring of imperial silks. A child born to the reigning emperor was literally porphyrogenitos ("born to the purple") because the imperial birthing apartment was walled in porphyry, a purple-hued rock, and draped with purple silks. Royal babies were swaddled in purple; we know this because the iconodules, who disagreed with the emperor Constantine about the veneration of images, accused him of defecating on his imperial purple swaddling clothes!

Update of "A Litany in Time of Plague"
by Michael R. Burch

THE PLAGUE has come again
To darken lives of men
and women, girls and boys;
Death proves their bodies toys
Too frail to even cry.
I am sick, I must die.
Lord, have mercy on us!

Tycoons, what use is wealth?
You cannot buy good health!
Physicians cannot heal
Themselves, to Death must kneel.
Nuns’ prayers mount to the sky.
I am sick, I must die.
Lord, have mercy on us!

Beauty’s brightest flower?
Devoured in an hour.
Kings, Queens and Presidents
Are fearful residents
Of manors boarded high.
I am sick, I must die.
Lord, have mercy on us!

We have no means to save
Our children from the grave.
Though cure-alls line our shelves,
We cannot save ourselves.
"Come, come!" the sad bells cry.
I am sick, I must die.
Lord, have mercy on us!

NOTE: This poem is meant to capture the understandable fear and dismay the Plague caused in the Middle Ages, and which the coronavirus has caused in the 21st century. We are better equipped to deal with this modern plague, thanks to advances in science, medicine and sanitation. We do not have to succumb to fear, but it would be wise to have a healthy respect for the nasty bug and heed the advice of medical experts.―MRB

Original Haiku and Tanka
by Michael R. Burch

These are original haiku and tanka written by Michael R. Burch, along with haiku-like and tanka-like poems inspired by the forms but not necessarily abiding by all the rules.

Dark-bosomed clouds
pregnant with heavy thunder ...
the water breaks
―Michael R. Burch

The poem above is my favorite of my original haiku. I wrote it while working on translations of haiku by the Oriental masters. Here's another one I particularly like:

one pillow ...
our dreams
merge
―Michael R. Burch

The Original Sin: Rhyming Haiku!

Haiku
should never rhyme:
it’s a crime!
―Michael R. Burch

The herons stand,
sentry-like, at attention ...
rigid observers of some unknown command.

all
the golden leaves turn black underfoot:
soot
―Michael R. Burch

A snake in the grass
lies, hissing
"Trespass!"
―Michael R. Burch

with affectionate dew
―Michael R. Burch

Celebrate the New Year?
The cat is not impressed,

—Michael R. Burch

NOTE: Cats are seldom impressed by human accomplishments, while the canine members of our family have always hated fireworks and other unexpected loud noises.

Variations on Fall

Farewells like
falling
leaves,
so many sad goodbyes.
―Michael R. Burch

Falling leaves
brittle hearts
whisper farewells
―Michael R. Burch

Autumn leaves
soft farewells
falling ...
falling ...

―Michael R. Burch

Autumn leaves
Fall’s farewells
Whispered goodbyes

Variations on the Seasons
by Michael R. Burch

Mother earth
prepares her nurseries:
spring greening

The trees become
modest,
coy behind fans

Wobbly fawns
have become the fleetest athletes:
summer

Dry leaves
scuttle like *****:
autumn

*

The sky
shivers:
snowfall

each
translucent flake
lighter than eiderdown

the entire town entombed
but not in gloom,
bedazzled.

Variations on Night

Night,
ice and darkness
conspire against human warmth
―Michael R. Burch

Night and the Stars
conspire against me:
Immensity
―Michael R. Burch

in the ice-cold cathedral
prayer candles ablaze
flicker warmthlessly
―Michael R. Burch

Variations on the Arts
by Michael R. Burch

Paint peeling:
the novel's
novelty wears off ...

The autumn marigold's
former glory:
allegory.

Human arias?
The nightingale frowns, perplexed.
Tone deaf!

Where do cynics
finally retire?
Satire.

All the world’s
a stage
unless it’s a cage.

To write an epigram,
cram.
If you lack wit, scram.

Haiku
should never rhyme:
it’s a crime!

Video

for YouTube.

Anyone
can rap:
just write rhythmic crap!

Variations on Lingerie
by Michael R. Burch

Were you just a delusion?
The black negligee you left
now merest illusion.

The clothesline
quivers,
ripe with unmentionables.

The clothesline quivers:
wind,
or ghosts?

Variations on Love and Wisdom
by Michael R. Burch

Wise old owls
stare myopically at the moon,
hooting as the hart escapes.

Myopic moon-haunted owls
hoot as the hart escapes

The myopic owl,
moon-intent, scowls;
my rabbit heart thunders ...
Peace, wise fowl!

Tanka

All the wild energies
of electric youth
captured in the monochromes
of an ancient photobooth
like zigzagging lightning.
―Michael R. Burch

The plums were sweet,
icy and delicious.
To eat them all
was perhaps malicious.
But I vastly prefer your kisses!
―Michael R. Burch

A child waving ...
The train groans slowly away ...
Loneliness ...
Somewhere in the distance gusts
scatter the stray unharvested hay ...
―Michael R. Burch

How vaguely I knew you
however I held you close ...
your heart’s muffled thunder,
your breath the wind―
rising and dying.

Here's a poem composed of haiku-like stanzas:

Dandelion
by Michael R. Burch

Lift up your head
dandelion,
hear spring roar!

How will you tidy your hair
this near
summer?

Leave to each still night
your lightest affliction,
dandruff.

Soon you will free yourself:
one shake
of your white mane.

Now there are worlds
into which you appear
and disappear

seemingly at will
but invariably blown
wildly, then still.

Gasp at the bright chill
glower
of winter.

Icicles splinter;
sleep still an hour,
till, resurrected in power,

you lift up your head,
dandelion.
Hear spring roar!

in time,
we're vulnerable.
sitting and waiting
days pass
as we don't sit in class.
everyone around us
Fragile as glass.
Families hurt
Jobs on pause
While the news plays
more pain
everyday.
Lives gone
so fast
At the snap of a finger.
The world froze
as we search for hope.

COVID-19
It has changed all the lives it hasn’t yet claimed
Too many deathbeds held souls in empty spaces
Innocent, isolated individuals
With their visitors crying in the hospital parking lot instead of their hospital room
As if goodbye wasn't hard enough

It has changed the way we grow
Children won't know how to share
Instead they will have “disinfect” ingrained in their young brains
Carrying hand sanitizer like a shield, a barrier against the germs
Taught to fear others as though they’ll **** us themselves

It has changed the way we consume
Online shopping to the point we don't remember what's in packages
Spending money we don't have
Sanitized carts and Purell at every entrance of the stores that have opened
Grocery shopping sparks anxiety like never before

It has changed the way we love
Zoom calls and FaceTimes are as connected as we can get
The inability to remember what it feels like to be in another's arms
We stand six feet apart, not knowing how to act
Trying to read the millions of emotions held within each others eyes

It has changed how we dress
Forgetting where you've placed your mask is just as bad as your keys
Face covers scream isolation
Smothering smiles, turning us all into faceless creatures
But somehow the mere thought of the pandemic feels more suffocating

It has changed the way we exist
Instilling a new fear into the next generation
A new urgency in the medical field
And overall, a new norm that makes unity unbelievably uncomfortable.

In Government Crews...

… MANIPULATION...
Is A Thing That Is USED...

To... Maintain Control...
of... Submissive Folks... !!!!

Manipulation’s Been Used...
Across Global Nations...

From... Colonisation...
To Games On PlayStation...

Where People Are TRICKED...
Into Doing Dumb Things...

So Of Course Weakest Links...
Are The FIRST To Join In... !!!

With... MANIPULATORS...
Who CLAIM To Be PLAYAS'...

When They’re Actually Sheep...
Well... SHEOPLE' I Mean...!!!

From Gangsters Who Lean...
To... Youthful Street Teams...

Who Are MANIPULATED...
In... Various Places... !!!

So What Is The LATEST... ?!?

A VIRUS That’s Making...
... BIG Manipulations...

Volumes of Patients...
Tests AND... Vaccinations... !!!

That’ll Work On A Basis...
Where Manipulations...
Are Flagrant And Blatant... !!!

Do You Get What I’m Saying... ?

Do Folks REALLY BELIEVE...
What Governments Feed...
About This Disease... ?!?

They’re... MANIPULATING...
It Seems That People Can’t See...
How Their... NEW Policies...
Will CONTROL Them Like Sheep... !!!

“Don’t Go Here Don’t Go There !
Wear Your Mask EVERYWHERE !”

As If They... Really Care...
About Peoples’ Welfare... !!!

Come On Folks BEWARE... !!!
Cos’ Y’all Need To PREPARE...
For This Type of WARFARE...

Where NEW Manipulations...
Are BLATANTLY BREAKING... !!!

What... ONCE USED To Be...
What We Call... FAMILIES... !!!

This Word... ISOLATE...
Has Caused CRAZY Change... !!!

And Now... MANIPULATES...
Like Those Who Spread HATE...
In... Various Ways... !!!

There’s So Much MISPLACEMENT... !!!
Where... MANIPULATIONS...
Are Used By HATE CREWS...
So That... IMMIGRATION...
Becomes HEADLINE News...

And Let’s Not FORGET...
About Various COUPS...
That These Governments Use...

To Keep Heads Confused...
About Who Is... GOOD.... !!!

As If They Get The Gist...
of What Being Good Is... ?!?

Just Like... Religions...
That Deal In... DIVISION...
And... MANIPULATIONS...
For MASSIVE TITHE Payments...
From Their Congregations... !!!!!!

There Doing It... BLATANT... !!!!!!

We’re ALL... MANIPULATED... !!!
At Various Stages of What We Call Life...

From Girlfriends To Wives...
Who Manipulate Child...
And Play With Emotions...
To Leave Some Men...
........ BROKEN......... !!!!!

To Boyfriends Who LIE...
And Husbands Who TRY...
To Provide Reasons Why...

Wives Should Stay By Their Side... !!!

After They’ve... Taken Time...
To Give Them BLACK EYES... !?!

They MANIPULATE Moods...
And Then Dish Out ABUSE... !!!

It Seems That The TRUTH...
DOESN’T Manipulate...
Like Most People Do... !!!!!!

It’s A POWERFUL Tool...
Like The Ones Gangsters Use... !!!
Which Is Why REPARATIONS...
AIN'T Reaching Black Nations... !!!

You See... MANIPULATION...
Is Where VIOLENCE Is Stationed... !!!

So That... Guns And Bombs...
Can Be Used To Pull CONS...
That Cause Nations PROBLEMS... !!!

So That They Can TAKE HOLD...
And Then Maintain CONTROL... !!!
And Then... MANIPULATE...
Like People Who ****... !!!!!!!

It’s A Game That Is Played...
That ISN’T Played Straight... !!!

So DON'T You Be Fooled...
Or... Let Them Confuse...
The Way That You Move...

Because It Is TRUE... !!!

When It Comes To...
... MANIPULATION...

“It’s Just What People Do”...
It's a VERY SERIOUS, and DANGEROUS thing !

Undead wishes
Made from unkept promises
Drenched like ***** dishes
And rotted cigarettes

Time grows from a school calendar
To a scary stranger
To a lonely mother's empty bed
Lurking with lecherous gazes
From wealth at it's detriment
Our freedom 6 feet below the sediment
beneath the ground many
thousands of souls lay

they had their lives
taken prematurely

songs of the requiem
play in remembrance

never shall the world forget
the disease's marring scar

that which dimmed a human's
light of existence

It Seems That MANY Are Living...

With... “Limited Vision”... !!!
Cos’ They’ve Fallen Victim To Being Those Willing...

To Being... “IMPRISONED”... !!!

In What Is Now Known...
As YES Being... “CONDITIONED”... !!!

A Condition Where DEEP Thinking...
Is Treated As If You’re Needing A Prison... !?!

Because SOCIETY Has Enforced The Theme...
That... Speaking FREELY....
If You’re NOT From Their Breed...

Could Well Be Seen...
As A Criminal Breach...
of Conditions of Speech...
That They’ve Said Cannot Be Expressed...
In The World... PUBLICLY... !!!

Because MANIPULATION...
Is Now... INVADING...
The Minds of Many...
Because of Loads HEAVY... !!!

That Many Now Carry...
Inside of Their Minds...
Because of Their Lives...
That Are Being Downsized...
Pretty Much ALL The Time... !!!

By Government Lies... !!!!

So It’s Those Who Are WISE...
Who DON’T Ignore The Signs... !!!

Who Have Now Realised...
That... Societal Vibes...
DON'T Treat People Right... !!!

If They Are The Type...
To REJECT Conditions...
That BLINKER Their Vision...

So That They Walk Blind...
Into What I Define...

As Being... “CONDITIONED”...

Which Essentially Makes...
Adults Behave Like Children...
With... “Limited Thinking”... !!!

So That They Can Be MADE... !!!
To BELIEVE What They SAY...
About Their... “ Campaigns “...

To Do Things Like CHANGE...
How The World Is Today... !!!!!

But That’s NOT What They Do... !!!
These... Government TOOLS... !!!

They Condition To FOOL...
And Keep People Confused...

Like... Fish In A Pool...
of Sharks That Are HUNGRY...
For MORE Than Their Money... !!!

Cos’ Conditioning Feeds...
Like Their GREEDY Teams... !!!

Whose MANIPULATIONS...
Have Affected World Nations...

Through... Colonisation... !!!

Do You Get What I’m Saying... ?

Cos’ Now WORLD *******... !!!
Is Their NEW Mission Statement... !!!

But THIS TIME It’s BLATANT... !!!

... “ Observe Social Spacing ! “...

Is What Their Relating...
Because of What’s Waiting...

A Virus That’s Taking...
LARGE Numbers of Lives... !!!

Are They MANIPULATING...
And Telling Folks LIES... ?!?

There’s A Truth That’s Disguised...
That’s Hidden From Eyes...
... I THINK You May Find... ?!?

When Political Guys...
Can Just Compromise Lives...
Cos’ They Will NOT Abide...
Their OWN Safety Guidelines... !!!

Manipulation For Them...
Isn’t Quite Like The Rest... !?!

Cos’ All This Upheaval...
Is WEAKENING People... !!!
While THEY MOVE ILLEGAL...
Because They’re DECEITFUL... !!!

And REFUSE CONDITIONS...
To... How They Be Living... !!!

And This ISN’T... Pulp Fiction... !!!!!
Because Politicians Seem To Need Supervision... !!!
Because Their Dismissing Advice That They’re Giving... ?!?

To... Millions And MILLIONS...
Who Are Being... “CONDITIONED”... !!!

To EMBRACE NEW RESTRICTIONS... !!!

Like Wearing A Mask Just To Do Daily Tasks...
Are They Having A Laugh Whilst 5G Marks A Path... ?!?

For Tech MANIPULATION...
Like That In NUCLEAR Stations... !!!!!!

The FALL OUT AIN’T Waiting... !!!
... Conditions Now VACANT... !!!
In... MANY Locations... !!!

So Who’ll Become Patients... ?
And Take Vaccinations... ?

Because of Conditions...
RESTRICTING Their Thinking... ???

A TERRIBLE End...
That Leaves Thinking For DEAD... !!!

Well... THIS Is A POEM...
For Heads Who Transgress...
Laws Set By NEW TRENDS...
About... Keeping Distance... !!!

Because Government Heads...
Seem To Clearly CARE LESS... ?!?
About What They Present...

Cos’ They’re Basically Feds’...
Causing People PROBLEMS... !!!

That Keep Placing RESTRICTIONS...
On... How We’re Now Living... !!!

So These Words Are Linking...
... Back To The Beginning...

If You Choose To Position...
Yourself To THEIR Mission...

of... “Limiting Thinking”...

Then You Have An AFFLICTION...
That You Should Be DISMISSING... !!!

BEFORE You Fall VICTIM... !!!

To Being...

...... “CONDITIONED”...... !!!
Well, I guess that many would have said that this was nonsense, BEFORE this virus situation !!!

However, right about now, and for a little while to come, we're likely to see some dramatic changes, in a lot of peoples' position, on being conditioned,....

Thus, the poem ........
