Late night drives while seated at the backseat
I observe my dad and his heavy hands balancing the steering wheel
Even though with half closed eyes I can feel his drowsiness
A cap resides on his head and his fingers are too huge for his wedding ring
And I wonder if mom is wearing hers,
Or if it’s placed in some inner pocket of her purse
Her unsteady head accompanied with light snores
Her reflection an image, almost an apparition on the window
And the vast blackness that comes along with it
I remember smiling as I drift off to sleep
The humming of the engine circulating the air,
Creating an ambience as I hug my knees
I look at my brother one last time
Faint beats escape his headset plugged into an mp3 player
I jokingly nudge at his shoulder
And a smile curls up the corners of his lips
I recall feeling content as I gaze out
Ahead were the dim city lights and the superior night surrounding unseen stars

I fell in love with every moment of it

Reminiscing childhood road trips

I used to define myself by how successful I was,
whether it was through stacking accolades,
the praise I receive from others,
or just plain getting what I want.
I don't want to be that kind of person anymore.
Let what I love define me.

i loved you with a heart beating
and in return you gave me back the friendship i needed
although i would still give you every ounce of my soul, every inch of my skin, every tear, every scar and every kiss i would bleed for
nothing will ever change, and sadly we were not given the power to control another person's heart
for we are already selfish beings, and i guess that's more than this world needs
yet you never gave up nor deserted me
and when i poured my heart out
you caught it with your bare hands, still beating and breathing
you held it gently with a smile on your lips and tears in your eyes
you said that you couldn't take it but i insisted
and you told me to say no more
because there are others who are worth and needed it the most
but that if ever those others would break the heart i poured

you'd be there waiting for me with yours

I prefer to think
life is not about
the pursuit of
happiness but
about the kind
of contentment
you can find
within yourself.
AK Bright Jun 2015
if you are looking for happiness
it's hiding behind contentment
I realize this is painted with broad strokes. This was geared toward the Ifs...if I had a bigger, better, faster, prettier, etc. I would be happy mentality. It is not intended to diminish or dismiss the true suffering that we all face.

I wish you were here
I'd hold you in my arms
And if you were near
I'd smile all the time

So lonely without you
The days are dragging on
I'm so glad that I have you
Without you life feels wrong

So please don't leave me
I don't think I'd survive
I wouldn't be happy
Without you in my life
Not my best, but it is what it is
Mike Essig May 2015
You opened a random book
to a forgotten page:
A formula for loneliness,
a recipe for age.

I never meant to bother you
disturb you happy life,
bu you took down that book yourself
and opened it to strife.

It was a lucky accident,
well, lucky just for me,
but you were taken when that page
fell open for you to see.

It doesn't make you happy,
it makes you ill at ease;
It wasn't what I meant for you,
I hoped that it would please.

Say the word, I'll go away
and leave you to your peace;
forget the ghost who passed your way
just paint your masterpiece.

I know I make you nervous,
I only want to say:
speak the word and I'll be gone,
I'll be gone today.

You woke me up to live again
I can't go back to sleep;
but I will not do harm to you,
I'm not that vain or cheap.

My life is in your little hands
It's up to you you know
to find a place within your heart
Or bid me now to go.

No matter how much you deny,
A lot of people don't know,
What really does go,
On in your mysterious mind;

They say you're ordinary,
Sweet, simple and soft;
But I know you better,
You're enigmatic and a hopeless fool;

I see right through you,
I see right past your innocent smile,
I see right past your sweet voice,
I see that you're a lonesome being with no choice;

To you, trust is a treasure,
Which has no measure;
To you, trust is a luxury,
That you cannot afford to lose;

You have a biased view,
About this world;
You think everyone is waiting,
To hurt you real bad;

You think the world wants,
You to fall deep into a bottomless pit,
You think they'd love to see,
The light in your eyes unlit;

According to you,
Sharing your secret,
Is like giving away,
Your credit card;

You may be a strong person,
But right now,
You're cautious, fearful and downright scared,
You're scratched, bruised and disfiguring-ly scarred;

You'd rather ****** your own family,
Than share your deepest thoughts,
You'd rather become a detached, holy saint,
Than give anybody the access to your heart;

To you, trust is a treasure,
Which has no measure;
To you, trust is a luxury,
That you cannot afford to lose;

But my dear, don't you see,
That you're a trapped bird,
Locked in a golden cage
Totally not free;

But my dear, don't you know,
That we, your people, aren't your real foes;
Your real nemesis, my dear,
Is you;

At first, your thoughts may seem mild,
But after a while,
They'll start running wild,
Staining, tainting and darkening your pure, pure soul;

Your poisonous thoughts will,
Take away the goodness of your heart,
Take away the humanity within you,
And carefully replace it with -

Fiery, scalding, burning anger,
Cold, grudging bitterness,
And a deep, carnivorous hunger,
To annihilate the ones who love you;

So, stop being so mistrustful,
Open out your heart
Slowly at first,
Then all at once;

Do not fear being backstabbed,
Because no matter what,
There shall always be people,
Who will be there for you;

Do not fear getting heartbroken,
Because, my friend, you're so strong,
And there are thousands of others,
Who'd help you mend your heart;

Do not fear everybody,
There might be ten people,
Who might hurt you,
But a thousand more who love you;

Contrary to what you think,
Pushing away the world,
Will make you sadder,
Not safer;
I don't need money
I've got friends
And that is all I need
My life is full
Of things I love
I've got everything I need

Money can't buy happiness
At least that's what they say
I don't know, I've never tried it
So, I won't argue today
I've all I need,
Not all I want
But, things will come in time
There's those who covet everything
Including what is mine

My life is full
I have my love
My wife, my friend
We share what we have equally
And we will until our end
Contentment fills my life with joy
I am happy with my lot
I've learned to live with what I have
And accept what I have not

My life is full of laughter
I'm fine...can you not tell
I've friends and love of family
No money...just as well

In a life constantly moving there are only so many perfect moments. The pale blue sky holds the remorse of every soul ever with drawn from our everyday life and it’s the moment that the sun and the moon lay distant from each other, yet still apart of the same sky, neither light nor dark but a symphony of an in between that we are just for a second able to witness the soft song that the wind blows, holding within it the memories of words. If I were able to witness a perfect moment in our busy lives I would pick this one, the one where I am able to feel your heart beat and your relaxed breath. It is that I am able to sit so contently in your arms, as if the moon and the sun and all the planets aligned creating a lasting moment of euphoria it is that I am able to gaze upon your face and see another galaxy, and know with the deepest part of my heart that you are all I’ve ever wanted and so much more.
