coqueta Dec 2020
I could coat this love with chocolate
But, love, that wont stop the rot of it
No matter what I do
You’re still gonna decay
So nothing should stop me from walking away
All these proud words, I’ll still stay
Wouldn’t it not matter for you
either way?

Cause a heart like yours that’s slowly deteriorating
I can promise you, love, is more than infuriating
You trample my flowers
No words, no guilt
I’ll grow them again just to watch them wilt
I’ll grow them and you’ll ruin all that I’ve built
Let’s just cover this heart with a chocolate gilt

And then, replace my soil with
Soiled confections
All in the name of earning
Your bitter affections
I did NOT realize this had been sitting in my drafts for over a year I remember it being the reason I started writing poetry again

Dragged grumbling to go visiting
Pat and Sue’s house
(mum and dad have friends?!)
whose kids are the “same sort of age”
as if that helps.
Then finding not only do they have
a massive, four lane Scalextric,
their tree has actual chocolate on it!
Or, it did have.

it’s a blatant lie,
deception in the smoothness of its texture,
empty of flavor,
a “substitute” for chocolate,
though it doesn’t come close.
It’s the cake of choice for romantics,
the red of passion
encased in sweetness.
red and white,
passion and purity,
a walking contradiction,
done up with sprinkles.

I’ve developed a taste
for dark chocolate
for cherries and blood oranges
Things I never imagined I would crave
in the same way
I long for you

I've fought myself
with my every thought
now there's no doubt
I killed the thing that I fought

I studied the maps
my lies that I bought
I set a lot of traps
it was only me that I caught

swallowed my pride
I was doing as I taught
I looked deep inside
I found the monster that I sought

Donuts don’t make me happy
I don’t feel happy anyway
But there’s a taste I prefer
Bitter chocolate, dusted sugar
Together on a donut.
