Red Lipstick

What I never leave the house without

Because it ***** out all the pigment in my skin

It drowns out all my ugly features

Red Lipstick

but today

I'm going to try

not wearing it

Because if she is brave enough

to face the demons in her head

this time of year

I can face mine

I should be able to be strong too

No Lipstick

I think everyone in the station is staring at you

No Lipstick

They are all thinking you're hideous. You should be ashamed. Those poor people who are forced to look at you. Go put on lipstick

No Lipstick

Look. Can you see your reflection in the glass? See how ugly you are?

No Lipstick. But beauty is not the most important thing.

Look, it's a girl from your elementary school. She just looked at you. The prettiest girl in the class. The one the boys liked, including the one you liked for so long.

No Lipstick. It doesn't matter. I don't care what she thinks.

Yes, you do. Now you have confirmed what her friends always said. What she has always thought. You. Are. Ugly.

No Lipstick. I don't care if I am ugly.

Yes, you do.

No Lipstick. Stop! Get out of my head!

No one has ever looked as repulsive as you.

No Lipstick. I'm fine.

No you're not. You're crumbling.

No lipstick. I am not. I can do this.

No you can’t. You’re too pathetic. You are not as strong as her. You are not brave. You are fighting a losing battle.

No Lipstick. Stop hurting me!

You are not allowed to stand up for yourself. You can't talk back to me. You are too ugly to deserve to be allowed to.

No Lipstick. I hate you!

Then that means you hate yourself.

I know. And I do. But I have to do this. It’s time to prove I care more about living my life than being pretty. So No. Lipstick.
Not every battle is as obvious. Something like leaving the house without lipstick can seem so simple and almost stupid to make a fuss over, but it is really, really hard for me to do today. I have to prove to myself there is no way that I have dysmorphia.
To all of you who are fighting quiet battles with yourselves, I send love and courage out to you. <3
I mailed you a letter because you said
the art of writing is dead but I know
how to twist words into sculptures still small
enough to fit in the post box. I hope
you read what I wrote. I opened my heart
and sent you a poem. Someday when you’re old
you will show your grand kids the written art
some hopeless romantic girl undersold,
prefaced with ‘it isn't anything great but
maybe it will lead you to understand.’
I never claimed to be the best but my
head is full of cosmos and volcanoes
begging to explode black holes on paper as
relics pressed between pages like a dried rose.
A relaxed sonnet. Somewhat of a rhyme scheme, 10 syllables per line until the couplet, then 11 syllable lines. 14 lines long. NOT iambic, thank god.
"I was happy, when sadness gently walked into the room and served me the most brutal slap that my feelings ever tasted."

Love me like the world will light on fire tonight
all sorts of junk in the unattached spare room,
dishes in the kitchen sink,
used straw for the old broom,
friends who don't have a clue,
well meaning teachers,
but down in your arms, in your arms,
i am a wild creature.

floor two foot high with newspapers,
carpet thick with pet hair,
half eaten gallons of ice cream in the freezer,
fresh fuel for the sodium flare,
i write down good reasons to freeze to death
in my spiral-ring notebook
but in the long tresses of your hair,
i am a babbling brook.
let the stars come out, and the moon shine bright
we're sleeping on the porch tonight
wind blew all the power lines down
watch where you step if you go walking around

this may be the night
our bodies fill with light
and we may hover above
the surface of
our warm, lonely planet

let cooling rains come, let them fall
let the grass grow strong and tall
let the dandelions breed
give me what you know I need

this may be the night
our bodies fill with light
and we may hover above
the surface of
our warm, lonely planet
For she who knows.
i saw the darkness coming down,
it posed no threat to me
i let the dakrness ease its way around
it was every good thing
i'd expected it would be
i saw you coming,
through the twisting vines outside
i saw the new moon collide
with the stars
clustered around her.

i saw the young fruit, of the new lime
i felt your breath catch it's rhythm.
i heard your legs push away the tall dry brush
i saw the moon and the stars
and knew the secrets within them.
i heard you saying
my name into my ear
no one has to tell me
why you've come here,
'cause i know.
i know.
i know.
For a very Prtty lady
Before music was a poem—
Writ in an empty black book
And then a guitar played me,
The world was rung in stars,
Simple and real as spun light
On a staff of gold in the dark.

And word becoming structure,
Branched out into leaving sky,
The notes of the minded heart
Opened in modulation of keys
And time was rooted in beats,
The song tapping in our dream.

After— music was a poem,
Old as a birth from the lamb
And memories calling forth,
From landed dreams awoke,
Everything before led me on,
This journey into bright morn.
