Dawn
light just seeping
through slatted blinds
robins begin
their morning song
at full-blast volume
I am awake, listening

hoping you made it
through the wilderness
and are sitting on the deck
with your morning coffee
listening to robins too
or loons calling on the lake
watching the sun rise

you said you wanted
to be lying naked
next to the woman
you love
when you're ninety
I hope to be the one
in your arms

perhaps completely deaf
to the robin's cacophony
and a little
worse for wear
but still loving
each other
just the same.

If only I could empty
The pangs of my mind
Upon these pages
What a mess you'd find
In words of rage
In staggering truths
In broken memories
Of my unsettling youth

Instead I write
In a vague dim light
My heart, it cringes
On a cold dark night
So many things
That are never right
Stuffed deep in despair
Where memories blur
A place where forgiveness
Never gave birth

And there upon the page
The tragedy I label mine
Never again a part of me
The mess I'd leave behind...

An accidental brush
two hands
touch while waiting for a train
an unbearable parting
with him acquiring her name

He now looks
for any excuse to touch her
like an invisible string
that tethers them together
soft skin of her mixed
with the hard rough of him

Their hands are now
clasped together
his on top of hers
sweet sweaty heat
resting atop cool sheets
Happy Valentines Day!!

Even though it has been ages
since we've talked
I know I got to you
I seeped under your skin
And I still reside there
Quietly waiting...
For you to feel that itch again
If you would just scratch
You could still feel me
