but every step might not go forward, I keep

But man there's a lot of broken glass down there,
painful, diamond shards trailing in with the past down there.

Not raised by a ****-head, thank god, but neglected,
but kept safe in a home offering protection
Mother's broke and mi papi es a ghost
left to my lonesome devilish devices
look it's a **** **** with vicious collection
of debt and death-draw bridged in prevention by vices
smoke till I choke, kid, smoke while I toast

Fay meets me
in the park
by the swings

Saturday
afternoon
after lunch
(the morning
was the time

matinee)

she looks sad
wearing her
lemon dress

in bunches

I ask her

Daddy said
not to come
unless I

Jesus's
twelve disciples

I ask her

at school too

about four
I tell her

she asks me

we can ride
on the swings
or the slide
or the fast
roundabout
or hang on
to the ropes
I suggest

she just shrugs

there's a bruise
on her arm
just above
her elbow

she utters

why is that?  

hurts to sit
she tells me

we walk on
through the park
to the road
to the shops

I buy us
2 ice creams
1p drinks
and we stand
watching life
us licking
our ice creams
sipping drinks

of baked beans
on warm toast
for my tea

and her dad's

if she can't

not reading
from the page.
