I see you everywhere I look
this ghost daughter of mine
in the backseat of the car mimicking the songs on the radio
in the grocery store holding my hand tightly against your tiny one
in the morning sunlight picking out your dress for the day

I hear you everywhere
you introducing yourself to guests at the front door
saying your whole name proudly
first, middle, and last
your voice screaming, "Mama!"
when you don't get what you want

I feel you everywhere
dancing in your tap shoes to L.O.V.E. by Nat King Cole
putting your arms out at the end
smiling ear to ear
jumping on me when I get home
holding onto my stomach with your arms
pulling on me
telling you what you've done today
your warm forehead when you're sick
and the feel of your brown hair in my hand as I pull back your bangs
I've never met you
but I miss you always

Migrants

We witness the scenes of overflow
fleeing from the throes of war..
Images of suffering
edges our comfort..
All are migrants
this our hidden condition..
We seek out there
as the distant beacons..
Longings are embedded in
present places..

Might we see as common
the seeking of migrants there
and our continual seeking..
We and they look for happiness
in that new place
a human seeking
for the grace
flooding
each and all...

Raindrops

Time turns and you can pluck a poem from each raindrop
barely take a breath in between the lines tumbling out.
Time turns ever onward and some days the rain drowns you
there is no clear air to be had as the weight of the world comes down.

I have heard of only one man who stooped down and wrote in the sand
perhaps it never was about what He wrote;
more about the sand particles we are all fragile as.

We fall into darkness real quick these days;
spinning away from the Sun.

Our dancing changes with the stars;
as our singing goes deeper into hibernation.

You really have to watch those liberal males,
they'll spend hours and hours with you having
deep intellectual conversations.

They'll discuss deep ideas, contemplate esoteric
theory and spiritual ideas. They'll make love
for hours and write deep and meaningful poetry
about you. Sure, they will probably wear their hair
long and most likely won't own a television.

But, they'll understand art and architecture and
literature. It's true that they probably won't give two
shakes about who won what football game, but they'll
dance with you late at night under the stars and they're
always looking for new ways to please you and usually
understand your deepest thoughts, often before you
understand them yourself.

They'll be your best friend and always treat you as
an equal, in fact, it will never even enter their mind
that you're not. They're almost always physically fit, too,
because they're usually the outdoorsy type and love to hike.
They never make fun of others, or discuss small ideas.
They enjoy discussing ways to improve the world and
the lives of others.

Sure, they won't slap you on your *** and tell you to get in
the kitchen and cook them some dinner and bring them a beer
while you're at it like those macho men on the right. Instead
they'll probably tell you to relax while they whip you up a
gourmet meal and serve it to you on the best dishes.

Yeah, you really gotta watch out for those liberal males.
I wrote this in response to a derogatory comment about liberal men.

Let's dance..

Let's dance the next dance
like it's the last dance,
like we know
that it's our last chance
to dance and when
the band begin to slow
hold me like smoke,
there is a flame inside my soul
burning the dancefloor,
let's dance before it goes...
... out.
