You pay the bills
rub in the cream
take your pills
it's still Autumn
and you can't sleep.

nothing works the way it should
not even
a lucky rabbit's foot.

So
shut the windows
bolt the doors
stoke the fire
and wait,

but my hair's turning grey
while I'm waiting.
