I wonder oft' on fortunes thought
Whether to intercede or not;
On this one or another's draught
One lives with; one lives without.
But envy not I the sparkling jewel
Too many before became the fool
For want of an uncobbled street,
Where souls must perish incomplete.
Better yet a rugged path to bear
Alone; no miracle ever sought
May deafness fall on heaven's ear
To own us each...our earn-ed lot.
