Applying for a Job at the Grocery Store

A scruffy young man at a table slouched
His scruffy baseball cap encircled his head
A crown of defeat to match his scruffy tee
As he drew his letters with a borrowed pen

(He picked his nose and wiped it on his sleeve)

Maybe his momma told him to get a job
Instead of lying around the house all day
Bumming her cigarettes and watching TV
When what he wanted to do was follow his dreams

(His fashionable sneaks were both untied – so cool!)

Which is what they told him at graduation:
Go forth and follow your dreams; the world is yours

(But it wasn't)
