Mary had just attended a gathering
with her girl friends
her mood was down
she wore a frown
her friends were as pretty as pictures
yet Mary be so plain

the gathering was at end
along the pavement she walked
wending her way home
looking down upon the ground
Mary found a compact
shining like a silvery moon lost
in a crystal stream

Mary knelt down to pick the compact up
it felt wondrous in the palm of her hand
its tingle hit her heart

she openedΒ Β the compact up
it sparkled with a luminous light
the spangling powder she then applied
with special care
to her surprise and astounding her eyes
was the vision in the mirror really her

oh! she cried for me to look so fair
a miracle for her to swear
Mary was plain no more
but as her friends
as pretty as a picture

magic from the spangling powder
applied to her face
transforming her from plain Mary
to a beautiful girl
Mary was so happy and no longer
wearing a frown
