A volley of sound
resonated from the crowd
so vibrant to ears
of those all around--

I stooped nearer
words were fragmented
but others responded
voices to me were no clearer-

like a radio muted
a phrase omitted
as soft as the twitter
of a tiny bird--

to the right I turned
then quickly to the left
words were garbled
I then discovered I was deaf!
