Kokomo Joe Is on a Roll
Neville Johnson Apr 2021
Kokomo Joe is on a roll
No more on the run
It’s Saturday night
The moon is bright
Here comes serious fun
Lolling on the library steps
The statue of a lion by his side
Annie arrives to greet him
Her eyes open wide
At his sartorial splendor
For he wears a midnight blue vest
He’s looked forward to this all week
They kiss with zest
The amorous pair walk arm in arm
To the nearest bar
Resisting another caress
Then it’s off to the park
Where doves coo, indeed sing
Surprise, surprise he drops to one knee
Then presents her a ring
A passerby stops to take a picture on his phone
As she accepts and Joe feels like a king

Real Tears
Neville Johnson Jun 2023
Those were real tears
Those I cried for you
I went all the way to see you
Then you told me we were through
I had never wept like this
Not before or since
This prince became a pauper
He has been ever since

When you give your heart to someone
When your hopes are on high
When you give everything you’ve got
When you don’t wonder why
For you know in your heart
Truly, she’s the one
Only to find out it’s over
Over with and done
It’s a mountain of heartache
With so much more to come

That’s when the real tears descend
They burn through your soul
Sleeplessness is de regueur
You lose control
Overcome by sorrow
No longer whole
Just feeling empty
About what could have been
Never will it be
For the future is foreclosed
Deliver that woe to me

Two Hearts
Neville Johnson May 2021
This is to your heart
Coming from mine
Heart to heart
Soul to soul
Sending my best
Remembering the time
We were together
Entwined
A love for forever
Yours and mine
Some days more than others
How my heart aches
As I ruminate about my mistakes
But I soldier on
Secure in the thought
That what we had was not all for naught
It’s twilight now as I send these thoughts
Hoping they reach you
And if not I know that you know
Our love still lives on
In my heart and yours
Though those days are gone

Where It All Began
Neville Johnson Nov 2020
Heather is a new arrival in the city of LA
She gets a job at the library
Meager is the pay
She’s trying to be happy
Finding her way
Hoping for love and a baby someday

Nick is new to LA too
He’s in from Edinburgh
Here for three months to do a book on Hal Ashby
Whose papers are stored at the library where Heather works
He is there every day
She helps him find documents and decipher Ashby’s scrawl
They become secret friends
Eating lunch together on a bench nearby

One thing led to another
They begin to hang out
From Venice to hikes in Will Rogers Park
But Heather worries
Is Nick too young?
If the difference is more than 10 years, she tells herself it must be wrong
She learns Nick is 24 to her 37
She is resigned to the fact that this romance cannot go on
Nick returns to Scotland despite their bond

There’s a rendezvous in New York
But ultimately they're resigned to their fate
It won’t work even though it’s been great

Heather drops him an email
Which led to a phone call
Nick says he wants to visit her
But Heather says no
She needs commitment
Surely, that he must know

Here’s the surprise for Nick replies
He wants to live with her
Their future relies on their love
Their love never dies
They are 13 years married with a kid of 10
Today they are showing her the library where they met
Where it all began

When It's My Time to Go
Neville Johnson Oct 2018
There’ll come a day when I’ll look back
At everyone I’ve ever loved
You’ll be at the forefront
Though so long ago
I still think of you
With fondness and regret
I loved you then
As I will when
It’s my time to go
I often wonder how you are
I get only tidbits
A picture here or there
A memory that flits
Like a butterfly
When we did this or that
When I simply held your hand
Hanging at your flat
Life is full of love
More than I could expect
I love you now, as I did then
As I will when it’s my time to go

Jenny and Richard
Neville Johnson Aug 2021
Jenny and Richard for 12 years were friends with benefits
Very off and on
They had such different backgrounds
She was a corporate attorney
He ran a moving company
See what I mean?
She got a fellowship in Japan for a year but they were still in touch occasionally
Then she took a job with a prestigious firm in NYC
She came back to LA and sent a message to Richard
I’m back, but sorry I don’t think we’re meant to be
A bit later they ran into each other on the beach
Jenny said take me out on a date-date
Richard was pleased to do so
After 12 years of casual, it’s time to see if they are something more

Somewhere Down the Line
Neville Johnson Feb 2021
It’s not right for us right now
Later, I’ll explain
I do know I love you so
That you should be mine
I’m hoping it will all work out
Wouldn’t that be fine?
We will be together, that I promise
Somewhere down the line

Somewhere down the line my dear
Somewhere down the line
You and me, we will be free
Somewhere down the line

Trust me, I’m protecting you
From what you need not know
It may be months, even years
But I need to go
I’ll be back, you know I will
Give me one last kiss
Just one more time
We shall be together, love
Somewhere down the line

Missed Connection
Neville Johnson Jul 2021
I saw you on the street
Tall and thin and beautiful
We talked on the corner
Waited through the next signal
We gazed into each other’s eyes
Then we both moved on
OK, a missed connection
But still a connection
So this is my only chance
An online call out
I know I’m just a voice in the wind
But it was chance meeting you
And by chance we will really connect again
Until then, I have hope in my heart
I’m looking for you
I’m 6’3”, and wore a beret
Neville Johnson Jul 2020
The parties and galas are over
Now it’s just you and me
Hunkering in our hideout
Luxuriating in the sea breeze
Yes we had a good time
We’ve got friends galore
I sure like to be with you
For all your kisses and more

I’m very encouraged
Happy we are this way
After all the festivities
It’s time for us to play
You’re my best friend and I am yours
How lucky you and me
We got it together
How it’s gotta be

The luckiest guy in the world
With a wonderful girl
So happy they are
Ruling their world
They radiate bliss
It’s charming to see
That lucky guy has it all
Once it was lucky me

She’s pleasant when I run into them on the street
But I quickly turn away
I’m incomplete
Reeling from emotion
What is there to say?
How nice to see you?
Not the truth anyway

Lucky in love
We should all be
Like that lucky guy with that beautiful girl
Can’t you see
How happy they are?
Their world a charm
Then there’s me
As luck would have it
Unlucky me

It’s a small flame he guards against considerable winds
It’s why he lives
It’s why he loves
So he soldiers on
Doing the best he can
Hanging on for dear life
Hanging on for her
For their life
He would die for her
He has hope
He has faith
Faith in their destiny
So he watches over their fire
Keeps the cold winds out
Each day gets a little better
Each kiss a little wetter
They are in love
Sweet, loyal
In it to win it

One love

Notwithstanding
Despite it all
Amazing, isn’t it?
How love thrives, survives
Against walls of repression
As in dictatorships
Yes, people fall in love in North Korea
They go on to have kids
They smile beneath their public masks
At home they play
And sometimes sing
In their nuclear family
The state be ******
For love has invaded the world
It’s not going away
In case you haven’t heard the news
Love is here to stay

I Protect You
Neville Johnson Jun 2019
There are 17 federal intelligence agencies
Yeah and I supervise them all
It’s a form of internal affairs
We’re here to protect the protectors
To ensure that civil liberties or not
To respect the right of privacy of American citizens
Our department grows bigger every year
The problems increase every year
Supervising intelligence officers and case managers
Who don’t want to be supervised
But if we break the law to enforce the law
Where is that at?
Let’s take torture, for example
I had to quit for a while because I didn’t approve it
Others believed in it, that it worked
Whether it did or didn’t, it wasn’t and it isn’t right
So anyway, I’m back what complicated world of spooks and demons
Don’t give me wrong, I like my job
I like the people I work with
But the notion of winning at all costs has long-term implications
I have to live with myself
I have to face the mirror every day
I’m the the conscience of the agencies
Conscious of what we do
All in the context of people who want to take us out
Welcome to my world

OK, we will but hey
It don’t look easy right now
Soldier on, they say
I’m calling old friends

The streets may be empty
But the city is still filled with love
We’re all coming together

I’m at the Museum of Memories
The only one here
It’s a great collection of romance
The loves of yesteryear
I’m one of the leads in each story
Almost all of the endings are sad
I don’t know why some didn’t work out
Some I wish they had
I go from teary to melancholy
Occasionally, I smile instead
I don’t visit the museum very often
It’s just too hard to take
Life has moved on and I should too
This is a museum of many mistakes
Here is another broken heart
It happens to be mine
I went all out for this princess
I was her never mind
This one I let get away
Boy was I wrong
Now she lives far away
All that remains is our song
Over here is the dear
She still comes around
Even though I led her on
I lost what we had found
What I did was wrong
It’s time to leave now
I can’t take it anymore
So much pain and heartache
Truth from the days of yore
No one else can visit, only me
Usually I do so when I need a dose of reality

Said she felt the same
That was then
Now it’s now
We still feel the same

Love is a golden chalice
Love is all
Love is kind
Love is all we need
For peace of mind

We still have the fervor
Of those lovely cuddled nights
Safe in our beddy-bye
Cozy through the night
When I told her I loved her
All my dreams came true
If you hope and maybe pray

Geri Atric and everyone’s friend, Amy Able go for a drink with Rose Wine. The bartenders, **** Tator and Gus To introduce them to the scary Mort Ality, who in turn invites over Nick Name, Hope Chest, and Nan O’Second as they would like each other, so he thinks.
Jack Russell doggedly observes from a distance, pretending to be in  an intense conversation with Deb Enture, which annoys the other participants, Sue Ffle and Ty Rade, who figure out what he is up to.
Off to himself, for obvious reasons sits Dan Druff, ignored by ***** Nilly, Stanley Cup, and the lazy Mo Mentum. Then the haughty Ruth Less arrives, with her entourage Miss Ann Thorpe, Heidi **, and Dee Pendant.
The weirdest trio at this holiday party has to be Sven Gali, Sig Alert and Grant Writer. Go figure.
The chef is none other Herb Dressing, the maître D is Nick O’Time,
Ed U. Cated stupidly calls out and nearly punches Will Power but is restrained by Charlie Horse, Arthur Itis, and the much-needed Ben Gay.
Hal Ibut orders a meat dish, with Al Falfa going veggie. Penny Less says, “This is rich,” when she hears about the near altercation, while Luke Warm nods wanly.
Tom Boy gets a kick out of Jack Boots as the couple, Miss and Cal Ulated, try to overhear the conversation but are thwarted by Al Cove, who intentionally loudly speaks over them. Of all people, Tommy Gun shushes them, for he wants to overhear what Buck Aneer and **** Tation say to each other.
Justin Case argues with Mel Rose, while he hits on Rose Mary, who in turn is trying to avoid Des Titute. Cord Uroy is shunned by Cosmo Politan who hangs with the greedy Ali Mony.
Mary Land is in an agitated state thanks to Mark Exhibit  who makes it evident Claus Traphobia is closing in on him.
Rich People engages with Cass Anova, while Penny Rate chats up Will Power. Honey Moon, recently married to Gene Splitting, gets an earful from Conrad Warning.
Needing attention, Molly Coddling coos to Art Forgery, who ambles over with Herb Tea, who is interested Penny Arcade.
Confused by all the people, there is Frank Ness, who can’t avoid the truth that Benedict Canyon and General Mills just don’t like him, leaving him with the boring Sue Veneer, who is not interested in him either.
***** Nilly, flustered, drinks coffee with Maxwell House, gamely sipping along with Three Card Monte. Nick Knacks hasn’t much to contribute to the occasion, then is accosted by Jack Hammer, who nails him in conversation and accuses him of plagiarizing Stan Za.
Joshua Tree woodenly tries to put up with Tom Foolery, doing so with no help from Tim Id. Tired of the night, Gerry Atric disappears with Jay Walk. Ty Rant annoys Will Call, and is admonished to cool it by Buzz Saw.
Patty Cakes avoids Phil Istine, who doesn’t care as he follows Perry Patetic around the event.
Roc Anteur buttonholes Phil Osophy, who is more interested in Bo Dacious. Corporal Punishment consoles himself with Miss Fortune,
     You had to be there.

The Trace of Her Outline
Neville Johnson Jul 2021
I see the trace of her outline as she walks into the sunset
A silhouette against the twilight
Soon the moon will rise and with it my hopes
Just as I know she will return
We reveled in these good times
As this day turns into night
We shall cherish all we have
We shall love with all our might
This portrait shall stay with me
In my heart, alive

It’s the end of our beginning
Beyond infatuation
Real commitment
The realization
Each day shall bring us closer
Even when we are away

This feeling we share
Unites us in so many ways
Crashing through our lives
Like so many waves
Ever in my thoughts
Her radiance so desired
I just want to be close to her
We have arrived

The Coffee House
Neville Johnson Nov 2019
She sits in the coffee house
Hat pulled over the top of her head
Dressed classy in a Joni Mitchell way
She looks down at the table
To the gentle music overhead she does sway
I notice behind her is a suitcase
On top of it a stylish black leather bag
I realize this is how she begins each day
At 7 AM, this place becomes home
It’s respite she seeks
She’s homeless and alone
Here in Beverly Hills
Of all the places to be
Homeless, probably helpless
Trying her best to keep her dignity
I’ll go back to my office
She’ll stay on my mind
I’ll say a prayer for her
That peace she does find
Homelessness is such a huge problem in LA, California, the USA. We need to find compassionate solutions. It can happen to anyone.

Made in the Shade
Neville Johnson Mar 2020
Pretty, demure, and lonely
Rosie did her job
Another day, another house
This one in the hills above
With its great view
Vistas to the sea
Nestled in trees
Providing privacy

She was there to show some shade
Offering all kinds of blinds
The owner, Jack, had just moved in
It was shade he sought
Now Jack, in his thirties, was a bachelor
Romance never seemed to work out
He liked what Rosie had to sell
Indeed, he asked her out

That occurred after he made her lunch
He was a master of the BLT
They devoured each other’s company
So hungrily
She stayed four hours
Came back the next day
Eventually spent the night
Moved in a month later
The blinds fit just right

Jack and Rosie don’t want for much
Not anymore
It was the best sale she ever made
Certainly, Jack’s best score

Say Hello
Neville Johnson Jul 2021
The world is filled with obvious things which no one ever sees
So says Sherlock Holmes, he's talking about me
For I did not detect someone shadowing me
Making herself indispensable in my life
It happened so subtlety
You see, I'm an ordinary man, with habits all his own
In the very early morning, I must be left alone
To gather my thoughts, take in the morning news
Then I go about my day, easily amused

I'm not quite sure how it happened but one lass caught my eye
Her name, if you must know it, is Cindy, and, whoa, she is sly
One thing led to another, until finally, this is where it's at
She's pretty much running the show, imagine that

It should have been obvious to me I would fall for her
I mean, take a look at those legs, they'd make any dude insecure
Combined with that personality, oh, and does she cook!
I'm not sure I needed more than one good look
At her and who she is and why it ought to be
That I should be with her and she should be with me

Obviously, I love this magnificent specimen of femininity
Meet my true love, say hello to Cindy

It’s in the bag
A matter of fact
Stone cold sober
He realized he was in over his head
A word to the wise
You better fly straight
And never blind
Before you’re cut down to size
Time is money
Money makes the world go round
Life is short
Love is blind
Misery loves company
All is fair in love and war
Except when you’re shooting blanks
When everything is picture perfect
You just give thanks
Which is no cliche
Try to rank at the pinnacle
With a touch of class
It’s now or never
Just a matter of time
Right out of the movies
Yet truth is stranger than fiction
For the camera never lies
But watch for those who’ll drop a dime
Don’t need reason or rhyme
Unless the train has left the station
And you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed
Instead of a fish in water
Then it’s a pirate’s life for me
You can’t make this stuff up
Or you’re barking up the wrong tree

They stayed together
A chorus of delight
The melody that lingers
With no coda
With love as the hook

Time
Neville Johnson Feb 2018
Time, it won’t catch up with me
I’ll just walk a little faster
It’s for me to accept
Time doesn’t stop
Certainly not for me
Yes, there’s inevitably
But I’m not looking back
Not trying to be
Anything more
Than a real man
Seeking the real me

The sober truth
Is that we’re gonna leave
But until then
Time won’t catch me

Autumn
Neville Johnson Sep 2020
Autumn brings falling leaves
The need for a fireplace
For hugs and coziness
Regular embrace
Hot chocolate is necessary
Good books and scarves
Plenty in the refridge
Lest you starve
A great companion
With whom to share the nights
Brings it all together
So everything is right

Legally Binding
Neville Johnson Apr 2020
We need a love contract
I can write it up
In it we will promise undying love
Kindness and humor
Daily pats on the back
Kissing and more
No alas or alack
We will be committed
To each other
Nothing shall intervene
We will strive for perfection
In each and everything
It will go on forever
Until the end of time
You can have a lawyer look at it if you wish
It will be just fine

Clickety clack
Down the track
It’s honeybunch and me
In our own sleeping compartment
Ooh wee!
Chasing adventure
Finally free from the humdrum
Of daily life
As we see what America is all about
It’s beauty
Little league
Big outdoors
Commerce everywhere
People holding hands
Desert stars
Swaying to the rhythm
Shacks and mansions
Kids at play
What a way
To see this land
While traveling with the babe
Clickety clack
Down the track
We got it made

She sat next to him
Simple as that
A lovely lass she is
They began to chat
Age appropriate
Common interests
In nothing flat
They began to bond
Which then led to that
Evening dinner
A date thereafter
Each day of the week
Then they moved in together
After a mere few weeks
The they got married
Then they had a kid
They live happily ever after
As you so wish they did
They sit next to each other
Every time they fly
Holding hand as they discover
The very friendly skies

You can never get too much of love
Ain’t that true?
One dose and you’re hooked forever
Just as you knew
Falling in love and getting married
Isn’t that the dream?

It starts with holding hands
Next the arm around the waist
Followed by a kiss
Then the warm embrace

You connect on many levels
It feels like home
A magical event
No need to roam

It closes the circle
When husband meets wife
You can never get too much love
Welcome to life

The Surrender
Neville Johnson Nov 2019
Hearts are broken
Then reopened
The heartache goes away
On the way to yourself you say
There will come the day
When my true love will come to stay
So you watch and wait and hope
Looking for that special one
Just as she or he searches for you
Then you will surrender
As you will not have a choice
You’ll hear the voice inside
Usually after a kiss
That this is a one and only
Not a hit or miss

With Her
Neville Johnson Oct 2021
She’s the light at the end of my tunnel,
The road that takes me home,
The ship that keeps me afloat
And she’s mine alone
Who keeps me together
Gives me hope
Supplies the jokes
Keeps me stoked
Makes it all worthwhile
Down to earth
Always in style
We go good together
One long smile

I love everything about her
Love and affection endlessly
We just roll along an endless road
What should be is now reality

Where was I before her?
Looking for her
When she arrived, so did I
Happy to be her other half
With pride
Ready to please
As long as she is near
I’m happy anywhere

She makes everything beautiful
With her I breathe free
With her, with her
Is where I shall always be

Mickey
Neville Johnson Oct 2019
Mickey is a cat who walks on his own
Doesn’t need a lantern, just freedom to roam
A man with a mission, a fan of the sun
A dreamer, a charmer, left a rough home
Made his own way, roughly hewn
A lover of life with romances strewn
A few broken hearts, some for him,
Some for the hers
He’s searching for someone
She’s out there, he’s sure
This loner is alone
His intentions pure
But he likes it that way
Better solo than stuck with someone
From whom you want to get away
He saunters down Main Street
A man with a mission
Nearly complete

The Blank Page
Neville Johnson Jul 2020
The blank page stares back at me
It needs commentary, thought
Longing, sadness, joy, satisfaction
Are all candidates
Maybe whimsy, something wry
It beckons
The human range of emotions
Our complicated minds
Angst, depression, self-loathing
Vying for attention
And good old regret
For things that can never be turned back
Loss of love, of friends
Mistakes made
But then there are the victories
The happiness at home
No one is perfect
One tries to hit the perfect zone
Which cannot be done
After all, we’re only human
So I stare at the blank page
Wondering what to say

This Need
Neville Johnson Sep 2020
Deep attachment and intimate love are part of the human condition
Everyone needs a someone to be with, converse, maybe to touch
To have a shoulder upon which to cry
This need is for all who live
Age, station in life, wealth do not matter
The same wants and needs cross all borders
The desire never subsides
