He wasn't home,
He's just a house you took shelter in,
When he's got broken windows and opened doors,
Leaking roof and creaking floors,
You don't owe him rent,
He was opened to welcome just about anyone,
And love meant permanent resident,
Not a temporary come-and-go tenant.

Inspired by Frank Wilbert Stokes' painting, The Phantom Ship

gobbled ten years ago
by greedy gales and warped waves
the SS Wilbert lay somewhere
off the Grand Banks

forgotten by all save
one sailor’s widow, who yet wandered
the sands, daft they said, to wait
for the ship’s belated return

no resurrection would occur
its oaken beams, cargo, and sad ******
on the ocean’s black floor, fodder
for creatures without eyes, ears

yet she swore she saw
its billowed masts, its hardy hull
riding ready waves on a blue horizon,
dark, but safe from tempest

I envy them
Because I’m on the outside
I look in at them
Happy and united
I eat alone
For the most part
I looked for safety
To leave that place
It wasn’t a choice
Now I’m alone
Looking in at them
I miss belonging
Being part of a family
I never get invited
To Christmas or Thanksgiving
Or any gatherings
I miss it
I see them happy
They never call or even text me
I tried for years
No one would reply me
Then one day I stopped
Choosing my sanity
It wasn’t my fault
To be bullied
Or the way they struck me
I've come a long way
The feeling in my chest has left
I use to squeeze it
To make the feeling disappear
But I stand alone
Much better than I did 3 years ago
I can smile and feel more whole
Time slowly heals
The scars slowly go
You have the ability
To go for the gold
Just get at it
Make your mission whole
Have that fire
And just take flight
Enjoy your journey
Make your world bright
