i've forgotten
what a comforting hug
feels like

my arms are like soldiers
guarding
   protecting
     preventing
even the slightest
touch

a hardness
encircles me
unbendable
   impenetrable
solid

and

   always

      there

i can't remember
tenderness

i'm confused
when kindness is offered

this world
my world
has brought me to this place

and the fight in me
has fizzled.

betterdays
i lie on my stomach,
on damp green grass
next to my son
our arms resting on granite rock
still warm
from the sun's passing
i stare into the clear water of the pond
down past the great big lilypads
down past the koi, on sentry duty
down to the rocks rounded and smooth
that lie on the bottom, some covered with
algae beards and mustaches,
some bald
and shiny, pale
and deathly white
as tho the sun ignores them
some with messages
in  the secret script of water snail scribes
none perfect
all marred or mis-shapen in some way
but together
they are a natural mosaic,
incredibly  beautiful
and
somewhat mesmerising

the sweetest woman I've ever met,
she brings a smile to all.
she's pretty hard to forget
and she'll never let you fall.

she will wrap you in her comforting
arms and she will hold you.
the years may add up,
but her smile doesn't show them at all.

there will be dozens
of people
who will take your
breath away
but the one
who reminds you
to breathe
is the one you
should keep
