Dreams long left undreamed unfold before my eyes
in a muzzle-flash of nostalgia and foreboding.

Lest these lights be lost beyond the gates standing
guard at the entrance to my secret heart,
I must grasp and reach for this dream in front of me.

Lay aside my pretensions to instead embrace and
endure a willing change of my spirit and mind,
right here in the stationary aisle of a foreign Walmart.

It's open season as we walk down the street
we were just keeping to ourselves
when cat calls, and whistles came to us
at the age of twelve
and, we looked to our fathers or, brothers to understand
they took us by the hand
saying,
"It's open season on little girls
now you'll have to put away your dolls n' things
go put on mommy's lipstick, and paint your face
here are some tall boots
and -- a black top with silk n' lace"
Those of us that survived
knew that it was a higher education
that would help us thrive
there were always the ones that sold out
and, you can see them on the street
the challenges of open season
just too great for them to meet.

For a moment you didn't notice
And my fingertips felt the broken ridges on your skin
Then you pulled away, and I could feel your heartbeat in the air -
No one had ever touched you that way, I'm sure
And I was tempted to say, "sorry,"
But then I realized that I wasn't.

Should I have asked permission?
It's the spontaneity, I think, that made it real
There was no filter then between us,
My head on your lap; your hand in my hair
Almost so intimate that it's grating to put in words
Because its meaning is lost in translation.
I never thought I'd write again but the gates have opened
Or, rather, the cracks have burst
So the sourgrass can grow
Like a **** making its living in a parking lot
Struggling against the tar
But always
Always breaking through
Given enough time
From the beginning
This is what I wrote
That I refused to show her because I was too insecure
Unedited
I've changed now
For better or for worse

The tears that did contribute to that wave
Of Misery did cease  -so they are no more.
I could not win for a loss, I could not save
A hellish beast dead inside, or else adore.

Will she recoil  by trickery, by ways of one
Magic spell, put upon me as once was mine
Or e'er spoil   me in the liberty I have won?
A length of toil  in the cell of lengthy Time.

You wake up filled with dread,
There seems no reason for it.
It's something unseen,
It's the beast within, the unseen force.
It eats away at you, at your core.
The silence greets you like a brick wall,
Questions remain unanswered.
The air hangs heavy with a pregnant pause,
The shadows hold their breath.
The flame of a past life burns,
The dark creeps into the space left behind,
A key is left to a vault once locked,
Will the key be found?.

You and I

The first time I looked into your eyes
Felt your lips against mine
Your body and mine entwined
Our hearts aligned
Our love combined
I knew I could search my whole life
And never again would I find
What we share
And I vowed right then and there
I wouldn't have to
I vowed
To love you like you were leaving
So I would never have to face the grieving
Of you getting up and closing the door
Because never in my life have I been so sure
That two people were made for one another
As you were made for me
And I was made for you
That two people could be so right for each other
As perfect as us two.
