WHY?????
Joe Cole Feb 2014
I sit here alone in the darkness
Alone with my thoughts
In a few days Christmas
A happy time, a time of joy
But no Christmas now for twenty girls and boys
What madness has assaulted this now sad world?
Where a life can be taken so easily
Without any thought or care
Children, five six and seven
WHY, WHY, WHY?
Tell me now that there's a god
Tell me why he let it happen
No, I dont believe any more
The slaughter of the innocents
Has destroyed all I ever believed in
Animals ****, yes but just for food
But its only mans inhumanity to man
That can destroy so easily
I wrote this poem after the Sandy Hook school shooting where so many innocent children died

Just being honest
Joe Cole Feb 2014
Yes just being honest
I cant write poems in the way that most of you can
I'm pretty much self educated
so forgive the errors in punctuation and prose
I write as I see and feel,
nothing fancy.
My very first poem on this site (Tranquillity)
was written while sat on rocks overlooking the sea
That is how I write. No sitting down with capacious notes
and a week to make it sound right
No thats not my way, not what I do
I just write as the words fill my mind
Give me a subject, I'll give you the words
But please never mock what I write
I do my best in this wonderful place
Please understand what you've read

Take A Look Around You
Joe Cole Feb 2014
Take a look around you
Tell me what you see
Another day of turmoil
Or a day to set you free

Take a look around you
At what this earth has got to give
At what it has to offer
So that you and I can live

Take a look around you
And decide which path to choose
Only you can make the choice
If you win or if you lose

Take a look around you
At this green and pleasant land
But will it still be here for our kidx
When we are not around

Take a look around you
At the destruction man can cause
When he subjects this fair land
To industrial abuse

Take a look around you
Think about what you could achieve
If you truly cared for this fair land
If you have the courage to believe

Take a look around you
LETS SAVE WHAT WE'VE GOT LEFT
Of a land so full of beauty
Don't condemn this earth earth to death

COUNTRY LIFE
Joe Cole Feb 2014
Country life is fine if you can find the time to go out in the early morning rain to feed the chickens
Traipsing round the yard is not so very hard but beware of dragging mud into the kitchen
On a freezing winters morn you can stay quite warm chopping wood to fuel the cooking fire
Be careful where you tread because that yard is full of dread and you might end up to your knees into the mire
Spring will soon be here and you can dig the garden through then sit and watch the birds eat the seeds you've sown
Summers hear again, you take off your shirt to catch the sun then complain about your red and blistered skin
You reap what you have sown wipe the sweat from off your brow and wonder why you chose to live like this
You sit down fore a beer,  ignore your nagging wife and put another hard won log upon the fire
You know its going to start again when you go out in the rain once more to feed the chickens in the yard
You chose this way to live you chose your nagging wife it's you who chose the country way of life
I wrote this for fun
Joe Cole Feb 2014
No classical phrase or fancy words you'll get none of that from me
No deep concentration or long drawn out thoughts I just write as the
words come to me
Out in the woods, even sat on the loo!!! Always a pen and a notebook  to hand
With a memory like mine its the only way that I can get the words down
Shakespeare and Burns they could churn out the words and every word would make perfect sense
In my case its a farce and good for a laugh because half the words I cant spell
But I dont realy care if I cant compare with most of the writers on here
I just write for fun about moon stars and sun, of snowstorms and cold winter rain

KERALA
Joe Cole Feb 2014
The blue Arabian sea, the towering Western Ghats
This then is Kerala the most beautiful Indian state
Lush green hill stations, lowland paddy fields
All are in Kerala between the mountains and the sea
Fourty four rivers flow so water here for all
Exotic plants in abundance beside the waterfalls
Enchanting emerald back waters put here for your delight
The days are never long enough to view each wonderous site
Kerala is called gods own country, the reasons very clear
Wildlife abounds, exotic birds and sika deer
Here you will live longer than in any other state
Fresh food in abundance and low mortality rate
Why don't you come and visit this paradise on earth
And take away the memories that you will always cherish

Darjeeling
Joe Cole Feb 2014
Beautiful Darjeeling in West Bengal I heard you call my name.
Like a siren you have lured me to your slopes and sun filled glades.
How could I resist the urge to come and join you there.
To be assailed by your beauty, smell your perfumed air.

I sit here in your paradise, from my pen the words do flow.
I sit and write of what I see and hear and watch the poem grow.
I know now and the meanings clear. Darjeeling the abode of God.
For only from his mighty hand could such a place be forged.

And so I sit and write of the glory that I see
And as I wonder at the glories another sits with me.
I cannot leave this beauty but alas I have no choice.
I would sing of beautiful Darjeeling but I do not have the voice...

Leave It All Behind
Joe Cole Feb 2014
Leave it all behind...... Ipads and mobile  phones. Spend a few days and nights in the high woods,  leave the worries and cares behind.

Leave it all behind.... Feel cool fresh air, rain upon your face, smell the fragrance of the wood smoke not the stench of petrol fumes.

Leave it all behind.... Spend a few nights beneath the stars. Breath the clean fresh air, relax and listen to to the music of the night.

Leave it all behind..... For a few days let the high woods be your home. A piece of canvas for your house. A flickering camp fire for your light....
At nearly 69 years of age I still leave it all behind and get up into the high woods. A time to think, relax and forget the stresses of daily life.

Leave it all behind.

After
Joe Cole Feb 2014
After the guns are silent
After the wounds have healed
The opening words from a song.......
But the wounds never heal
After 40 long years the pain is still there
Memories burned into your brain
In the hours of darkness, night mares
It could have been me not him
Why do we do it? Answer the call
When ever our countries have need
Its not politicians who answer the call
Its not politicians who blled
Its the boys and the girls of our countries so fair
Who give there their lives
In the fight for liberty
Eight thousand miles away from home
To keep another nation free

Her
Joe Cole Feb 2014
Her
In her smile the warmth of sunshine.
In her eyes the moonlights glow.
Serenity surrounds her.
Where ever she does go.
The gentle breeze of springtime.
Whispers her name into the air
And the colours of the seasons
Are reflected in her hair.

I don't care any more
Joe Cole Jan 2014
I don't care anymore
About long held childhood dreams
Just give me my fields and my forests
Or a rocky perch o'er looking the sea
It's in such places that I can gather my thoughts
And write the words in my mind
Its in such places that I can get lost
Forget the rest of mankind
Here in the solitude away from turmoil
Here my mind is at rest
The smell of the pine trees or the sound of the waves
Tis in such a place you can lay down and rest

Hello Poetry
Joe Cole Jan 2014
You all come from many different countries,
from many different walks of of life.
You read here in my daytime,
I read here in your night,
There are so many diverse subjects,
so many diferent styles.
But no matter how or what we write,
our words cross a million miles.
Words can bring us close together,
words can express how we feel.
They can tell of deep emotions,
or feelings of good will.
Complex works of litery skill,
or simple words like mine.
Sent to all corners of the world,
crossing space and time.
No matter how or what we write,
there is a common bond.
Our words bring us close together,
at Hello Poetry....

sorry
Joe Cole Jan 2014
Sorry, I dont have your eloquent turn of phrase,
I'm self educated, no university degree
I can only write the simple words within my head
But are they any less than the words here that I have read
I read here stanzas that make no sence
Long diatribes of useless words
YEAH so sorry I don't have the knack
To pour out words of meaningless crap
And so what is left for me
Writing simple, clear and free
No university education, I'm self taught
But are you really better than me
Joe Cole Jan 2014
So you want to be a hero and go off to war?
Well first listen to me and learn how it is.
It's not like the films you watch every night,
a quick clean shot straight through the heart.
No... you hear the thud as your mate takes the round.
His guts blown out, blood and **** on the ground.
Oh sorry!!! You didn't think it would be like that.
Well wait untill you smell the blood and the crap.
Another thud and another one gone but this time
his grey jellied brain is spattered over you.
IF your lucky you might go like that.
If your not lucky you might step on a bomb.
"God oh god where have my legs gone"
Yeah, if your lucky they'll make you a pair,
but look a bit closer, your ***** are no longer there...
You think I'm joking when I tell how it is boy?
Well go off to war and see how it is.

Are you sure you want to be a hero?
Yes, in the mid sixties I did experience how it is

A Twist In The Tail
Joe Cole Jan 2014
A dark stormy night, howling winds, lashing rain.
Wet, bedraggled she stood beside the road. Lost, scared.
I stopped the car and walked towards her, saw the fear in her eyes.
I wrapped her in my coat and gently carried her to the car.
Arriving home a warm towel to rub her dry, gave her some food
She was still shivering when I wrapped her in a blanket and held her in my arms.
When I woke next morning she was laying soft and warm beside me, her head resting on my chest.
At that moment I realised, she was mine.

All my life I'd waited for this moment.
Finally I had a dog of my own.....
I knows its not really poetry but it was fun to write

Change
Joe Cole Jan 2014
The sun has left my south country hills
Now they are lashed by wind and cold rain
The birds that fly south for the winter
They have left my hills, they have gone
The once rich fields have been stripped of their crops
They now lie there wet, muddy and brown
No more bright flowers for butterflies and bees
No more the sound of birds summer songs
I miss the warmth of the sun on my face
I miss the bright summer moons
Its the change of the seasons in my south country hills
All to soon the winter will come
A time to sit down by a warm log fire
Think of the better times to come
A time to think, a time to write
A time to gather ones thoughts
To dream of the sun once more on my south country hills
To dream of spring and the new life it brings
The cold rains of winter will soon fade and pass
And once more we will greet a new year
Once more I will wander the pinewoods
And enjoy my south country hills

Dreams
Joe Cole Jan 2014
Believe in your dreams
Believe what can come
Live for your life
But don't live alone
For every woman a man is out there
For every man a woman who cares
Open wide your heart,  open your mind
That person is out there, that person you'll find
Spend not your life in sad misery
Just reach out and grasp the dream that you see
They only come once. The one you desire
So grasp it and treat it as you would a flower

SUNRISE
Joe Cole Jan 2014
Last night we watched the sunset as we sat holding hands
And now we watch the sunrise casting light upon the land

The gently rustling leaves high lighted by the glow
The birds begin their love songs as the warmth begins to grow

Could you find a better time to be with the one you love?
Azure blues sky and the new days sun shining up above

I turn and look into to your eyes, see the love reflected there
All doubts now are cast aside because I know that you are here

Together we'll experience each and every brand new day
We will have each other until our dying day

Even on the darkest days for us the sun will always shine
For I am yours my darling and you forever mine

Yes we sit and watch the rising sun, your hand clasped in mine
I wouldn't have it any other way, at any other time

As we grow old my darling and life begins to fade
We will always remember the sunrise on this lovely day

KIDS AT PLAY
Joe Cole Jan 2014
Just some kids at play in the park
We don't care if your white, brown or dark
All we see is our play and our fun
No colour, race, or religion we all play as one
You go to prayers on Friday, I go on Sunday
They are just the names of days, they don't stop our play
So why can't you adults act just like us
No abuse, animosity, no pointless fuss
We're eight nine and ten, just kids in your eyes
But we know what's best,  because even kids can be wise

Malta Through My Eyes
Joe Cole Jan 2014
Gazing down from my hotel balcony, a beautiful breath taking view, acres of landscaped gardens, flowers, trees of every colour and hue

My eyes travel over an azure blue bay. To a thousand coloured sunshades assaulting my mind

An ants nest of seething half naked humanity, burnt red and covered in oil. Surrounded by discarded bottles and cans and wrappers of ice cream stained foil

For a week they're going to lie there, bodies burned raw by the sun. Their idea of enjoyment, their idea of holiday fun

I have walked the length of those bright golden sands, smelt the stench of the stale cooking oil. It gives me no pleasure to linger here while I have the real Malta to enjoy

Beyond the human pollution the sand dwellers love a burnt barren ridge gainst the sky. And yet from this red brown earth an existence bis clawed by the strength of a strong Maltese hand

My gaze travels left to the beautiful church and the cream coloured town just beyond. The old and the new joined hand in hand where concrete marries natural stone

How many of the sand dwellers have enjoyed what this beautiful land can provide? Have they truly experienced this island,  seen life on the other side?

In a few days they'll be up there flying back to the place they call home, but from what they experienced of Malta they might just have well been to the moon
This was written on my hotel balcony 18 months ago while on holiday in Malta, my favourite holiday destination

Flowers Always Forgive
Joe Cole Jan 2014
Forgiveness is the heady scented perfume from a flower when you crush her under foot
She knows you didn't mean it, she knows you didnt look

A few short hours ago she was there
Felt her precence there, smelt her perfume so sweet
Her sweetness had filled the air
She had made an entrance
Her presence was revealed

She's now battered bent and torn
But her memory still lingers on
As her bright colours start to fade
Her sweet perfume still fills the sunlit glade

Although she's long dead now and gone
She has also stayed alive
Because the seeds she had inside
Were scattered far and wide

Next spring she will again appear
To the delight of hummingbird and woodland bee
To stand in her full glory, for all the world to see
Joe Cole Jan 2014
It's been raining all night long
As I was singing sad love songs
Look at the sky so dark and gloomy
The air so damp and warm and lazy

Looking out from my window
The streets were wet and sloppy as the rain came slowly and doggedly down
As though it had not even the spirit to pour
Thats exactly how I feel tonight... Sad, emotionless, empty and lonely

I pray for a little sunshine
Will there a little light at the end?
Will warmth once more fill my heart?
Banish sadness from my soul?
Bring new joy after long wet days
A new life, a new start for what has yet to come

Begone dark clouds of sadness
Begone wet cold begone
Welcome to this brand new life
Welcome a new beginning
Although the rain has played its part
The sun will warm the living

The storm has left my aching heart
No more sorrow, no more pain
Dark clouds have been lifted from my mind
By sunshine after rain

To Be A Child Again
Joe Cole Jan 2014
Just as spring is life reborn after winters chill, I also want to be reborn and be a child again

I want to leave this adult life, return to distant memories, leave this hectic modern world and be a child again

Imagine as an eight year old, no worries to sear your mind, every day a new adventure, I want to be a child again

Who's here now to comfort me when worries tear apart my heart? When I was young it was my mum and dad. Oh how I long to be a child again

Take me back to my childhood days, take me back to my early years. Take me back to where I long to be, so I can be a child again.

But with you its all about ***

Nature and Love
Joe Cole Dec 2013
Hand in hand we wander down this pleasant sunlit glade
Bees and birds and butterflies are seen on every side
Just you and I and natures charm, no one else in sight
Side by side, hand in hand under the dappled light
We need no orchestra playing nor the music of a band
We're content with natures music in this green and pleasant land
We pause beside a rippling stream, watch dragonflies do their aerial dance
The air is heady with natures perfume and the feeling of romance
This is the time for lovers, the time for you and I
I embrace you and I kiss you, beneath an azure blue sky

Joe Cole Dec 2013
Courage is to face the fears and doubts within your mind

Courage is to answer when you hear your country call

Courage is the father who faces daily toil

Courage is the mother giving birth to yet another child

Courage is accepting failure when you know you tried your best

Courage is your conviction at the time of facing death

Courage is never giving up when you know you'll lose the fight

Courage is dealing with your fears when protecting what is righf

The Wanderer
Joe Cole Dec 2013
No permanent home no mobile phone he doesn't need any of that
All that he needs, all that he wants carried in a bag on his back

No hot morning shower to brighten his day just a dip in an icy cold stream
He wanders the byways and small country roads seeking to fufill his dreams

He needs no soft bed under a roof just a grassy bed under the moon
Far does he travel the small country roads, he needs no bus train or tram

He's quite content with the life that he chose, the life of a wandering man
No beer or fine wines will he ever drink, for him cool clean water is fine

His dinner food that nature provides so no worries about earning a wage
His life is an unfinished book, each new day the start of an unwritten page

He's content living this way under the sun and the stars
He knows it will end as for all men it must when he finally writes the last page
I've reposted this in response to Travelers Hobo poem, I've called him a wanderer and all countries have them

What Could Have Been
Joe Cole Dec 2013
You made your choice and walked away from what I offered you
A cabin on the mountain side with sea and forest views

I offered you your freedom from a life of toil and misery
But someone some where out there decided it wasn't meant to be

The first time that I met you you were high and dressed in rags
You were hanging around with the wrong crowd and most of them were bad

Where are you now I wonder, with me you would have been treated like a queen
Are you laying in some filthy gutter having alcohol fueld dreams?

Why did you let it happen, what turned you onto crack?
Oh somebody said try it, it won't hurt you. Well this is the end result

Your life gets a little shorter every time you take a puff
You're poisoning every body cell when you use that filthy stuff

Where do you get your money to get your ***** smoke?
Perhaps you sell your body to every other passing bloke

When I first met you you were beautiful,  just like a pageant queen
But now your face is *****, ***** grey and worn

It's to late now to show remorse for the things that you have done
The man in black is waiting and your life will soon be gone

Sadness

Dark clouds fill the sky
Sad thoughts fill my mind
I think back over the years
Searching for happier times
What has gone wrong?
Where is the peace?
Where is the the love we once had?
Thinking of you creates a storm in my heart
I long to be happy,  not sad
I don't know why it ended this way
Where is the love we once knew
Gone are the days of laughter
Now just days of sad sombre moods

My Yesteryears
Joe Cole Dec 2013
Gather round and listen to my stories of of yesteryears, of dragons in the mountains and mermaids on the shore

Yes, these tales are true, I saw a mermaid once as she lay upon the sand, instead of legs a fishes tail in colours of every hue

Ah yes tis also true that I once entered s dragons dark lair, his eyes were like firery brimstone, the foul stench of his breath filled the air

My friends gather round a bit closer while I tell you of things in the night, I once watched five faries dancing, like fire flies lighting the dark

Now have any of you seen a unicorn? Pure white, a single horn on his head. Well I was lucky enough one to ride one. The first man ever to mount that wild beast

OK, so you think my words are the words of a fanciful fool but I have suffered from the dragon and yes, bruises when from the unicorns back I did fall

I've heard the mermaid singing sweet love songs, her songs floating out cross the sea. I've seen the dragons souring on leather wings as they float cross the sky

In my pocket a scale from the mermaids tail and a scale from the dragons dark lair. Round my neck hangs a cord that I braided. Braided from unicorns hair

My friends these stories I tell you, every word I've told you is true, I would never cheat or deceive you, with tales from my yesteryears

Cruel seas rage far below
Just reach out and take my hand
I wont let you fall

When your lost in the wilderness
Fear and danger on every side
Just reach out and take my hand
I will be your guide

Afraid and lonely in the darkness
Can see no hope in sight
Just reach out and take my hand
I will be your guiding light

Old bent and broken like some cast off shoe
WHY?
After all, I served my country and paid all my dues
I never asked to get tired and old, it wasnt my fault
Now all I have left is this torn threadbare suit
Until it gets dark I'll just wander the streets
If I'm lucky find a doorway, get a few hours sleep
Food!!! Well at my age a little's enough
Some discarded chips, a dry stale crust
I served my country well, saw comrades die
Now I wish I'd died with them, beside them to lie
My only crime was to grow weary and old
Who's going to mourn for me as my body grows cold

Nobody because no body cares

WHY?

Diamonds In The Grass
Joe Cole Dec 2013
It's early in the morning, the sun comes over the mountain peak
To reveal a million shimmering diamonds scattered round her feet

Each a liquid sphere of beauty shot through with rainbow light
Only the magic hand of nature could create such a wonderous sight

A million glittering dew drops which were laid there in the night
Each is now a diamond transformed by the suns warm light

She sits in stunned amazement as each diamond fades away
Burned away by the rising sun with the coming of the day
Joe Cole Dec 2013
It's midnight in the city, a gently falling rain
Just the odd car passing,  the distant rumble of a train

I sit here and listen to the creatures of the night
Listen because I can't see them for they stay out of sight

One sound stands out above the rest, continually it's heard
Even on the darkest night the singing of a bird

I know not what it looks like, colourful or drab
It doesn't realy matter because the songs are never sad

All night she sings while others sleep, her songs so loud and clear
Bringing happiness in the darkness to all who are there to hear

Why does she sing her sweet refrain through the hours of the night?
Perhaps she sings for those of us who have to stay awake

Then come the early morning light and a mighty choir is heard
No human intervention but a choir of singing birds

It's with reluctance that I must leave here with the coming of the light
But later I'll be back once more to hear her singing through the night
Long lonly nights working as a security officer and listening to the same bird singing in all weathers was the inspiration for this poem. Sorry for the typos

SYRIA
Joe Cole Dec 2013
Syria oh Syria why do you bleed?
Brother fights brother without thought or need
Ruled by a tyrant for so many years
And now the spilt blood is washed away by tears

Democracy by debate you tried and you failed
Now the wives and mothers they cry and they wail
Democracy now sought at the point of a gun
Your country in turmoil, lives being undone

I sympathise and weep at your terrible plight
Your people are dying, no end in sight
Can man ever undo the chaos he's wrought?
Going to war without reason or thought

Syria oh Syria your bloods being drained
By those who would seek political gain
When the killing is done will you be better off?
Is what you might gain worth all the loss?

Your economy gone so how will you live?
The worlds in recession, no money to give
Families destroyed and homes are no more
All destroyed by a political war

Natures Lace
Joe Cole Dec 2013
All through the night she works, tireless,  never ceasing to spin her silken threads
The perfect creation of natures lace, a silken shimmering web
No hand of man could ever produce such a beautiful work of art
With computers and modern technology we still wouldn't know where to start
A silken thread floating on air is gathered up and put into place
All this in darkness without pattern or plan she creates natures beautiful lace
Each silken thread is stronger than steel, stronger than anything man could produce
All this from a spider spinning her web, a product of natural juice
With the coming of dawn and a new rising sun a sight that is sure to amaze
Every tree, every bush,  every fence post, draped in a gown of gossamer lace

Travelling in the last hours of darkness down this long dusty road
Looking up I see the moon so full on her journey through the night

I want to leave my earth bound life and on her take a ride
For she is travelling westward and would take me to your side

I continue on my lonely way the sound of road noise in my ears
But if I could ride upon that golden orb it would wipe away the years

To ride the road of the milky way to your side where I belong
No dvd or radio just the sound of angels songs

Is it just a dream I'm dreaming or can it become reality
To be with you my own true love, just us, just you, just me

Of little folk with soft green hats with long grey beards and such
Well you should believe in all those things because by magic you are touched
That tinkling noise in dead of night that has no earthly cause
That is the magic in the air and that magic is all yours
Believe in witches, black cats, cauldrons on fires bright
Believe in knights of ancient times in armour gleaming white
Think about the moon dust making diamonds in the sky
Think about the magic surrounding you and I

FREEDOM
Joe Cole Dec 2013
I walk away from the ***** grey quay, step onto an equally ***** old boat
Only god and a sailors good luck will keep this poor thing afloat

I'm  saying goodbye to the life that I knew, a life of hunger and toil
I sail in search of the promised land, of sunshine and rich fertile soil

Will I look back at the land that I've  left as I sail out over the sea
No I dare not for it might drag me back to the place where I don't  want to be

Like the brave men of old I have to be bold in my search of my true destiny
I leave behind a life of slavery for a new life where I can be free

No magical skills do I bring with me just a love of the land and the soil
In my new promised land I will be free, for only myself will I toil

In my bag a handfull of seed, a knife and small axe that I own
But its with these crude tools in my promised land that I'll  carve out a place to call home

The ship sails on and old Ireland has gone tis now just a faint memory
Soon I'll  be there breathing freedoms air fresh in
my new land, the land of the free
Just to get started here's my contribution to my challenge

Just Words
Joe Cole Dec 2013
I can't write the words in the way that some of you can do
I can only write the words that in my mind come into view
I can't write of devotion and never ending love
The inspiration for my words comes from somewhere up above
Yes words about the sea and gently rolling hills
These are words I know and sometimes get to use
Words can be things of beauty but sometimes cruel and harsh
Some words tell of sadness whiles some words can make you laugh
The words of fellow poets here cover every point of view
My words are plain and simple but I share my words with you

Reality
Joe Cole Dec 2013
Like a thief in the night you took her
You stole a piece of my heart
All those years ago when we married
I swore we never would part

The plans we made for our retirement years
Now those plans will never take place
You've taken her but I still see her
With that beautiful smile on her face

Three children we had and she loved them
And I am loving them still
Their mother can no longer love them
You stole her, fought her and broke her.
Destroyed her cast iron will

Now the house is an empty reminder
Of the the days when our love filled the air
I still look round expecting to see her
Sat there in her comfortable chair

Yes, like a thief in the night you took her
Destroyed the life in her soul
Destroyed the woman I lived for
Cancer stole her right to grow old
This was written for a friend and read out at her funeral. Having just read the touching poems posted by Donna and Quin I felt that I had to repost this because it is something that has probably touched most of us at sometime in our lives. Cancer awareness is important to us all.

Awakening
Joe Cole Dec 2013
The trees stand stark and bare gainst winters lead grey sky
The snow lays cold and deep and the earth asleep doth lie

No bird song heard no little things move across the land
The earth in hibernation, a long sleep as winter makes its stand

I wake one morn in early dawn and warmth has come once more
A small bird sings, a green leaf springs from natures open door

Once again the land awakes and life begins anew
And the bitter cold of winter has vanished like the dew
Joe Cole Dec 2013
I went away but I never left you all those long years ago
I always kept your picture in the place next to my heart
You were mind to love and hold but I never took the chance
To fulfill my pledge to you and the promise of romance
Remember that time in the misty rain when we walked my south country hills
That beautiful rainbow as the sun shone through and you became my *** of gold
We stopped at a place called tranquillity and watched the seagulls soar
We talked of dragons and mermaids and tales of our yesteryears
In my mind I still see you, an angel emerging from the sea
You were mine, I was yours, it was our destiny
I remember the time when we held hands and talked of being a child again
How we dreamt of a ride on the freedom bus in search of a new promised land
Then came the day we were torn apart like a photograph ripped in two
One half being me, one half being you
I remember that dark and stormy night when I was lost for words
Now we will never experience the seasons together or another early morning walk
No more will we enjoy the country life or natures sweet beauty
No more will we listen to bird songs or sail on  a ship cross the sea
All I have left are the sweet memories, dreams of how it meant to be
I went away but never left you, you went away my love but I know in my heart that you also never left me
When Sharona and I were on another site we wrote numerous poems, this work is made up from titles an excerpts from many of those poems

The Way It Should Be
Joe Cole Dec 2013
From Americas rocky mountains to Himalayan snow capped peaks
These are things of natures that all of us should keep

Australias barren outback, Englands green and pleasant hills
Nature free for all mankind who seek her gentle thrills

From the Amazons tropic forest to arctic cold grey wastes
Each a place of beauty when travelled at natures pace

The azure blue seas of the pacific isles, cruel dark seas of the southern cape
Placed there by natures hand to be respected without hate

Dusty brown plumage of the desert vulture, bright birds of paradise
Birds of every colour, birds of  every size

Scorpions of the desert sands and grey atlantic seals
All there for a reason as only nature can reveal

Think about the lion, African king of beasts
The soft eyed Chinese panda that our children find so cute

Mountain tops and hidden valleys, vast lakes and rolling seas
All placed there by nature but not to be abused

Animals reptiles birds put here for you and me
They should be studied in the wild. NOT KEPT INSIDE A ZOO

We can't alter history or repair the damage that we've caused
But we can stop the mass destruction of a world that's mine and yours

WHY
Joe Cole Dec 2013
WHY
I sit pen in hand but the words have left my mind
No longer can I pen the words about things that I have seen
I cannot find a reason for the blankness in my soul
The words have gone, no longer flow, my mind an empty hole
Where has gone the inspiration? The imaginative sharp mind
Where has gone the urge to sit and write?
The words that can open eyes
No, no, no. The words have gone my pen has stilled the ink no longer flows
The last chapter has been written......The book has now been closed...
