Tiptoed out of my bed,
not to alert mom and dad,
in a day that now seems in another life,
I went in to the outstretched
hands of mysterious, silent, night,
my secret lover waiting for long,
in our quiet courtyard,
expectant.

The moment I stepped out,
a net so light fell over me,
amazed I looked up to the sky,
and found trapped in a
gossamer net the stars hold,
woven by lightyears far and near.

I pleadingly looked at the moon,
who had a feud going on
with my lover I did suspect,
but she smiled at me and asked
"You are with us, aren't you?"
Yes, I said, and never changed my word
since then.
This morning I read your name for the very first time.
The sad thing is, any other day, I would have just seen a name.
But today I saw a cinderblock on the vital organs of those left in your wake.
Laying heavy in the mouths of those trying to remember the
importance of breathing, of moving on.

Today we are forced to remember that no one is ever just a name.
You were a heartbeat. A soul.
A vibration of the universe that felt anger and pain and love.

Someone should have told you that, the night you tried to find wings.
For the boy who took his life at LU. It is the world that has failed you, not you who has failed the world. Rest in peace.

my city

Cali
in a city that breeds hooligans
ingrates and indecencies,
where the architecture of a lost era
crumbles into brothels and madhouses,
where shootings peak
with the heat of summer,
where new windows are boarded up daily
and we chop down trees like fanatics,
in the city I call home,
in the city I love,
destroyed by its ignorance,
I am condemned to silent pleas
and empty stares.

I laughed at the way
you ruined my darkness now
you're gone and smiling.

Beauty still abounds
All around the pretty world
Let's love each other!
