Washed away

For of this heart, a branded stain-
Unrecognized,
draped of lingering whys
found amidst
clouded chapters now written
on merciless skies

Beneath a foot bridge
peering up
as footsteps approach
waiting, counting the cracks in the board
in filtered light
absorbed

Debris collects in the corners
of my forced smile,
raspy tones invade
what once was my voice,
though now
words float more harm
than good

Two silhouettes,
hand in hand,
pulling on the edges of my heart,
seizing it, tearing it,
spitting on the waste now
carelessly tossed
to the side

Quickly the creek it rises,
cold water reaching my chest,
numbing, if only temporarily
the pain,
filling the gaping hole,
flooding my senses

Now as shadows fall
on puddle’d earth
and footprints
disappear over the crest
of what was once love…
I cry,
fearing the ripples
as my tears
follow desperate currents
slowly washing me away

Find Their Hand

Find their hand

Alabaster dreams converge,
neither here nor there,
calling out to one,
finding they respond with a kind hand…happily

Eclipsing hate’s nightmare…patiently

Beyond the window waits hope,
blemished of a drawn curtain
and tempest fears,
which it cries for you…in tears of future joy

Sorrow fuels this hope…relinquishing pain

Reach...for inside a light does flicker,
a soft glow,
calming and peaceful,
beckoning the truth and offering a moment’s peace…quiet solitude

Holding you closely…feel its warmth

For within you lies a heart,
love filled and crafted,
leaping at the word go,
challenging thoughts that bare down…heavily

A friend’s hand helps with the heavy lifting…eternally

Find their hand, it longs your touch,
your smile, your happiness…you

Unravel the night as it nods off
to become a wall of darkness
until the sun looks into your eyes
once again
and you feel the light of truth

Then tell me what is real
among the promises we have made
and why the blood running through our veins
speaks of us, and only us
as our hearts are seduced

Shall we continue to live on the edge
where each breath we take
challenges our bodies to become
harmoniously in control
and one with each other

For as our hearts do speak
of the need to see each other's face
and how love's flame burns
within our eyes, we dream of destiny’s
touch upon our soul

Reaching for the light, truly shining
on our hearts and of our faces
to open the eyes of those who do not
see or know,
exposing our love for what it is

So take me unto this light with you
to play as children in the snow
to love as adults within the driving passion
taking us deeper into the realm
of love unhidden, exposed

Our song
Jack Jan 2014
Why’s she dancing with him while their playing
A song that we called our own

Can’t she hear my heart, its breaking
God, I’ve never felt so alone

How come he gets to be so happy
When I feel I don’t belong

Why’s she dancing with him…
While they're playing our song

Perhaps
Jack Aug 2014
~

Perhaps…it is the light,
reflecting in symphonic visions from dampened roadways,
serenading my heart in melodies of whispered thoughts,
painting lyrical lilacs on a gray canvas
with fraying edges

even as clouds connect the sun,
I sit alone, on a worn leather seat,
fingers tapping the steering wheel in rhythm with
the endless miles connecting my cultivated dreams
with pictured fantasies that may prove to be just that…
fantasies

yet I look,
optimistic eyes perusing spring fed corn row wishes
and sunflower sonatas,
which my heart faces with fevered emotion
and anticipation of each new coming day…

(constantly aware of roadblocks set up
along the shoulders of your heart)

Distractions come as an eclipse darkens the sky
or is it my heavy eyelids causing the detour,
yet my soul is alert to the possibilities
of what might be waiting,
behind that locked door
where silence allows me to hear your words…
written in the wee hours of the morning

an invitation to share this morning with one who matters,
one who touches me, one who feeds me
with a simple hello and a cup of coffee
or something more…fantasies become realities…perhaps

What is it to smile
Jack Jun 2014
What is it to smile…

when the eyes you cherish
turn from you,
peering off into the distance,
seeking another sight,
encased in a theme
that does not include you?

What is it to desire…

if what you long for hides
behind curtains of pain,
blacked out windows
redirecting the sunlight
to a place
that longs for nothing?

What is it to breathe…

within a life that does not matter,
in full view of your imagination
crumbling like so much dust
beneath cushions of your heart,
mingling with lost change
alone in muffled visions?

What is it to love?

Deep within my heart

Oh so weak, I lift you by delicate wings,
gently as to not smear the wonder
that does meet my eyes

Softly you rest in my hand,
exploring my skin,
the lines of my life, crooked and scarred

Tiny feet dance
tickling me with wonderful sonnets,
penned by nature herself

As if you can see
my intentions are pure,
for I long to bring you joy, which you bring me

A sweet fragrance on the wind
rhymes perfectly with your mesmerizing luminescent colors,
shimmering in the morning sun

Spread your wings my little friend
for I have planted you a garden
filled with the nectar which you desire

And I will sit and watch
silently as you float, happy and free
amongst the beauty that grows for only you

Deep within my heart
A friend taught me about the beauty and the enchanting quality of butterflies. Her conversations with me prompted the writing of this poem.

There you sit
In your red crushed velvet jacket
Swaying to the music
A ribbon in your hair

Gazing at the bad boys
In sneakers torn and tattered
Smoking in the corner
You just can’t help but stare

Silhouette desires
Pearls form your neckline
Sweetly blowing kisses
Below the neon light

Can’t they hear your whispers
Seeking merely favors
Nothing past tomorrow
For only but tonight

Longing for a taste
***** on the counter
Fingers crossed and hoping
Waiting to be seen

Lonely minutes count
Stiletto heels are hurting
Could it be they’ve noticed

Once More

Deep within this weeping world,
where darkness hides the smiles
behind faded curtains of disbelief
now blocking the sun…waits
two arms longing to hold you,
offering comfort of softened ease
extended from broad shoulders strong,
ready to bear the load
of the sorrow that grips your heart

for it is found of this gesture,
long of these collected words
a friend who cries at the emptiness
which now must clutch your chest,
ripping wounds of a motherly kind
past any scar once felt or healed,
desperate to make whole
these frantic needs circling your mind
retracing each back step of questioned fault

distance may carve miles from stone
and leave falling farther from near,
yet beyond any horizon, any vertical detour
thorned bramble archway or cliffside hauntings,
I will reach, grasp and claw
hoping to lift you from this darkness,
to shine that light of hope
with every ounce of energy my body owns
so that your world may be bright once more
Written for a friend who is dealing with a very serious personal issue right now.
Is it wrong to show compassion and a desire to take another's pain from them, even if it can't be done? Is it wrong to write a poem based on these feelings? Could it be looked at as a way of gaining attention through another's pain and suffering? I am just curious what you think.

Finding peace
in the fourth card
stacked in a deck of despair

Changing life
can’t be so hard
finding the choice waiting there

Ante up
placing your bet
stick to the dreams you have seen

Cards face up
see what you get
there with your king and your queen

Take the ***
into your hand
leave all your troubles behind

Walk the walk
at your command
happiness now you can find

Joe wants to know
how long it takes
What inspiration
a poem it makes

It depends on my mood,
how everything goes
Sometimes it’s quick,
sometimes it’s slow

Often a thought
gets stuck in my brain
Like moon glow affection
or sunflower rain

Saturday whispers
and butter cream smiles
Lingering lovers
o’er hummingbird miles

Inspired by beauty
or love in my heart
Just give me a pen
I’m ready to start

And you’ll find me writing
not keeping the time
It takes a bit longer
if it has to rhyme

But no metered seconds
or minutes that fly
Just penning words
at least I will try

Though this time I’m counting
just for you Joe
To give you the answer
you so want to know

I looked at my watch
while right here I sat
And penned out this baby
in three minutes flat

Warmth embraces your wintered skin
Radiance of nature’s kiss
You feel it…

Music plays this early morning hour
Melodies fill the room with sound
Lifting your weary spirits
You hear it…

A smile that glows of wondrous beauty
Enchanting and eternally contagious
Sending hearts a’ flutter
You show it…

Coffee is freshly brewed and hot
A welcomed companion at dawn
Slowly pouring yourself a cup
You taste it…

Spring is waiting on the chilly horizon
Blues skies and fragrant blooms are not far off
Butterflies are soon to awaken
You sense it…

Silky beaches with turquoise waters
Margaritas in romantic locations
Resting in the shade of a majestic palm
You dream it…

Poetry appears on a flickering screen
Wonderful words to entice your mind
Verses in flowery fonts and design
You see it…

Even though I haven’t told you
I adore you more than all of these things
And I sincerely hope
You know it…

Handprints appear on these elevator doors,
smudged of grinder swirls, yet so very clear
Imprints of need and want lingering
on a stainless steel façade

Rounded numbers beg to be pushed,
no thirteen in this bunch
though appropriate it would be
as my luck has found its way to the lowest levels

Standing on this suspended platform
cables of strength weaken with each breath,
emergency exits laugh at my predicament,
as left again slowly reaches out for right

Before me you stand, tears on your cheeks
“It is the way it has to be,” you say
The doors close, while through a narrowing vertical slat
I see you walk away…my heart drops…palms on metal…

I can not keep them open…anymore

If it is true
Jack Sep 2014
If it is true

Each day brings something,
good or bad it comes
Leaving us wondering,
what does this mean…
when sidewalks roll up or gates unlock
inviting our movement or hindering it
When clouds form pictures
dark or light they appear
and we stare in belief that they are for us

When maybe they are not

Counting sunbeams
in relation to the shadows
cast upon our smiles
Do we smile or do we just pretend,
failing to accept the truth
that life is not fair
Even under the bluest skies
rain can fall
whether we accept it or not

And never do

Can we mask the heart,
hide it from ourselves
not feel the pain, the sadness,
the emptiness leaving gaps
Huge crevices in what we wanted,
what we hoped for,
what we dreamed about
with eyes open and thoughts frantic
of love, for love…in love

It never ends, it never ends

if it is true…

An Autumn Day
Jack Nov 2014
~

Sun filled skies ignite the trees in colorful array
Of falling leaves and scented pine, November on display
The beauty that does meet our eyes so comforts all we see
A Sunday drive, uncharted roads, together you and me

A softer breeze we shall not feel, the wind about our hair
On journeys off to anywhere the two of us shall share
Scenery of heaven sent down every road we drive
Your hand in mine, a favorite song, so glad that we’re alive

Majestic oaks, their leaves of gold, create our solitude
So many years their world has been amongst the harvest moons
Blue sky dreams and dragonflies, the magic that we find
Pumpkin patches line the country streets on which we wind

Love is our companion, constant, everywhere we go
Precious is the feeling as we take in nature’s show
On this early morning as the world does seem to shine
Enjoying every moment with a true love that is mine

There, a happy flock of geese upon a lake they play
Let’s get out and walk a while, take in the wondrous day
Along a path, we stroll the edge, the splendor of it all
Listen as we hear the geese, their early morning call

An autumn day, the sun is bright and you are here with me
Nothing in the scene can show more beauty than I see
When I look into your eyes reflecting skies above
And feel the happiness they bring by showing me your love

We were meant to be right here, wherever this may be
Hand in hand in nature’s home, a feeling oh so free
Or anywhere that we may roam, whatever day does start
For destiny is in control and you are in my heart

Said the shadow to the tree
Jack Apr 2014

Said the shadow to the tree,

“You know my friend, life is not always fair...
take this vine of fingered grip,
tentacles of timid meaning
Holding you close as to not let go,
filling each bark split void,
strangling the very life from you
Why does it please you so...

when given time it will engulf,
blocking the sun light,
tightening in mass fury,
wrapping itself of everything you stand for
Then when your strength is gone
and you topple to the ground,
this vine will happily move on
to the next tree,
while you rot, returning to the earth,
which once gave you life?”

The tree replied,

“Because it feels so good to be wanted”

The sun set and the shadow was silent

Spent

Clouds they seem to bind me,
horizons call in a weakened voice
as I walk this asphalt world, my hands in my pockets,
searching for loose change and memories

A folded piece of paper absorbs

my feelings scribbled on a napkin
Saturated in timeless moments of what once was hope
Clinging to the aftermath of you,
filled of braided strings and fraying verses

Small floral faces plead

daisies, thorn’d and harsh
stretch towards the heavens, hunting moisture,
wilting on stems of disbelief,
calibrated to temperate timing or lack there of

I know how they feel

reaching for the skies, expecting an answer…
even in clouds, ashtrays, holding the residue of filtered emotions
Silence in a tormenting shade of gray,
scattered by the faintest hint of wind

Revealing a sun

as if it even matters, my pen is dry, barren
of arid thoughts melting in the wasteland of my mind
Corrosive and blistering in my hand,
lost in my last pocket of emptiness...

So precious this love that my heart does confide
Warm as the touch of your skin
Bright as the joy that does beam from inside
Filling my cup to the brim

You are the thoughts in my mind everyday
Visions of beauty you send
Caring and kindness on constant display
Oh but to know you again

Many the years that I stood all alone
Wondering what would become
Of this my life, on a path all its own
Searching for my only one

Down from the heavens my eyes did perceive
An angel of wonder so fine
Standing before me so hard to believe
This day, for this angel is mine

Open thy wings for I want to come in
If you will have me this way
All as your own for a lifetime begins
Until the end of all days

Yours is the love that I’ve dreamed from afar
Here in my heart it now lies
Bringing a peace that does shine like a star
Up in the clearest of skies

Take me; oh take me, for I am to give
Happiness true it does pour
Love me unending as long as I live

The Flowers are Blooming
Jack Sep 2014
The flowers are blooming

Sifting through my day,
withered masses of an old heart
searching in the wrong corner,
dreaming in muted grays on a white background,
hoping the flowers bloom
and I get to see them

Long hours offer only relief
when I look past the walls
formed around my smile so long ago
they are only a faded memory
flickering in and out,
losing clarity

Out of nowhere, struck by a bolt of lightening
so brilliant, beautiful, electrifying
I can only stare and wonder, is this for me
to keep or look but don’t touch
To…dare I say…love
Love, my lonely volume of a friend long dusted on the shelf

Love, I now laugh, love only finds those
who deserve it and those signs have long since
pointed a different direction
But a voice speaks otherwise
a soft tone, a sweet noise I’ve not heard
or imagined since…

Whispers of affection from you
fall upon my ears…my ears?
like I am something, somebody, and it feels good
even if it is so hard to believe
And I feel tears forming…tears, could this be happiness
I ask, when there before my misted eyes

The flowers are blooming
and I see them
Now I suppose I'll wait and see if they die again.

Dreams ~ Memories ~ Imagination ~ Poetry

~
I find that dreams are painted
on the inside of our minds
Watercolor images
of what we come to find

Flowing on the breezes
as they whisper softly low
Sending forth a message
of things we're soon to know
~
Memories are fashioned
of a once remembered place
Sewn together neatly
on the edges that we trace

Photographic visions
held so tight behind the wall
Waiting for the moment
that our hearts begin to call
~
Imagination flourishes
with nothing much to see
Scenes that we now conjure up
of where we long to be

Dancing on the avenue
with stars up in the sky
Even when it’s cloudy
we can see them wander by
~
Poetry brings feelings
standing sweetly now as one
Wrapped in tiny packages
these verses filled with fun

Tied together neatly
of the thoughts we’re thinking of
Colored paper stanzas
with a bow on top of love
~
So as you read this poem
think of memories you’ve seen
Use your imagination
to create the perfect dream

And hopefully you’re finding
that all of this is true
For these four words I write about
are all inside of you

Who I was

Blurred, these tracks of memories
Beyond the dreams that I may seek
Lost in windblown sanctity
Of roaring steel on endless plains

Adrift along these boundaries
Singing songs of desperate days
Within my mind…alone…wandering
Seeking that which is not forgotten

This fight to stave off destinations
Where frowning faces paint sad reflections
At every stop along the way
With flashing crossings in broken trust

And still the rumble feeds my heart
With hope that this line will soon end
Remembering me for who I was
And not what I have become…

“Let me take from this, your kiss, the taste of you my lips shall miss”

So long since I held you
X’s on the calendar days…pattern’d of my missing
Promises made on long distant lines
and letters sent, penned of love’s smiles on sleepless nights

“My heart it finds the lonely view of all my days away from you”

Loneliness the common as passing time mounts,
your kiss my mind imagines in the haze of life
Duty calls, yet my heart is not in it,
for on that day I released it to you

“While on this journey’s winding path my love held in a photograph”

Sepia dreams in brilliant colors,
to hold that goodbye kiss in my hands,
lingering in my tear splashed eyes…
I hold my breath until the time

*“When once again of destined charms, I hold you tightly in my arms”
