Labyrinths and crypts of cold stone
Ever shifting and strange
Led me to that forgotten chapel

I stepped inside its narthex
Distant and remote
A place only dreams might reach

It was always night there
In the sanctums of that place
Every trespass palpable

Yet the darkness was not consuming
It seemed stagnant and moribund
Weaving vainly around the pillars and pews

Stripped of the fear that darkness brings
It lulled about aimlessly
Trapped within those rotless walls

Waiting for the return of the light

Minimal Infinity
Hadrian Veska Jul 2017
Simple shapes
Of turquoise and black
Sheets of oceans
And shattered mountains

The distance invisible
Two dimensions
Refracting infinitely
Back and forth in time

I saw everything
Everything that ever was
And everything
That ever will be

I understood none of it

And that knowledge alone
Put a smile on my face

The Boulder
Hadrian Veska Jul 2017
The boulder stood there
In the waning dusk
Towering before
The slopes of the mountain

Every evening I stopped
And watched the boulder
As the shadows grew
And the moon began to rise

It horrified me
Though I could not say why
Save for that it vaugely
Resembled a hunched giant

Not far from the rock
Was a smooth spot
I'm the side of the mountain
That look as though it was cut

I never dared go any closer
Walking past quickly
Something was not right
The night there seemed sinister

Carrying on with my life
I did not pass the boulder
For many days and nights
Occupied with my work

When I finally took that way again
Down past the mountain
The boulder was no where to be seen
And the smooth cut stone

Had turned a faint purple
Almost phosphorescent
Against the cool colors
Of that mountain night

The Underearth
Hadrian Veska Jul 2017
Feathers lift my downturn head,
Carrying me to the land below.
Solemn sky and crumbled stone;
Remnants of the Underearth.

The ground of tangled sinews,
The forests of marrow bone,
The heavens of moonlit blood,
The very air; slivers of ice.

Something beats among the feathers,
A pitch black mass; ungulating feverishly.
The many limbs and eyes
Of a thing long forgotten.

Where it leads me I do not know.
But I have no doubt any longer
That from the place I am going,
I will never return.

Dark Waters
Hadrian Veska Jul 2017
I've aged a thousand years
In the dark waters of my mind

Who I am I cannot be sure
Someone or something lost

I remember distant ripples
Of words and faces I once knew

Colorless and muted they sink
In the treacherous waters

Until they are one
With the very darkness itself

The Way
Hadrian Veska Jul 2017
Show me O Lord
Where you yet abide
For no longer can I see
Without you by my side

Dark sprits and men
Have led me astray
A thousand times
Throughout my days

Your word is true
The only key
Twisted by men
More cleaver than me

I am too simple
And easily swayed
To keep up with the demons
That dance in my brain

Come to me Lord
And show me the Way
That I might rest assured
At the close of the day

Lemongrass
Hadrian Veska Jul 2017
The smell of lemongrass
Passes in through the open window
As I scan about the room

Wicker baskets and containers
Overflow with odds and ends
Trinkets and relics alike

On the shelf above
There is a picture frame
With nothing but a stock photo

The room gives off the appearance
Of being lived in yet,
No one has lived here in a long time

They merely pass on through

The World That Is
Hadrian Veska Jun 2017
Where is the world that might yet be
Beautiful, tranquil, calm and free

It is here still and may yet be found
Careless buried below shallow ground

Should we ever stand to then pursue
The world it is that once we knew

We shall find it was waiting before us

Patiently all along

The Shallow Sea
Hadrian Veska Jun 2017
It had happened so long ago
None now there could recall
How or why the helmets and armor
Lay at the bottom of the shallow sea

Like clockwork at dusk
Such relics would wash ashore
Battered, rusted and torn
To lay on the white sand beach

The children of the nearby village
Loved to pick the prettiest pieces
And bring them back as souvenirs
To decorate their little huts

The adults of the village didn't mind
But they were warry of certain obiects
Namely the black boxes and drums
Full of pointed or rounded cylinders

Years ago thinking it to be junk
A villager threw one such box in a fire
The result sounded like a great host
Of lightning striking over and over

Some of the villagers thought
The boxes could be used to make fire
But none of them yet have deciphered
How the strange objects work

No, for the most they are content
Living in their riverside village
Happy and oblivious
That the world ended long ago

The Churning Winds
Hadrian Veska Jun 2017
Galaxies revolve
Beyond the silver light
That the moon pours down
Through the great winds

Like honey flowing
Ever so slowly
Does the light endevour
To reach us here below

And when it does
There is a stillness
Unlike any known
Which puts the soul at ease

But that calm is brief
Whisked away in the breeze
Of ever changing winds
And the poisonous churn of time

Ganymede Lost
Hadrian Veska Jun 2017
It grew unabated
Every month it could shelter
Another few million souls

We tested in on Ganymede
Within less than a year
The colony was thriving

But it did not stop growing
In the subsequent years
It covered the surface of the moon

It grew and grew
Until it deemed its very denizens
A threat to its survival

Few escaped and those that didn't
Were forced to hide
In the recesses of that endless city

In time the city engulfed
Not only the surface
But the depths as well

It grew until nothing was left
But a living maze
Of metal and machinery

A place where none
Now dare venture
The planet city of Birulon

Dimming
Hadrian Veska May 2017
They appear to be mirrors
But aren't quite so simple.
They are made of some material
That reflects light to create energy.

I won't pretend I understand it;
As I look from reflection to reflection
In each of the angled mirrors
Set in a circle about me

The images echo on endlessly,
Curving off into space.
The only permutation
Being the door I entered from.

I looked for a long while
Trying to locate the point
Where all reflections converged.
Alas, I could not find it.

As I continued looking
I caught something
Out of the corner of my eye,
It was the door opening.

I went to look at the door
Being led on by its reflections,
Until I came to the point
Where I knew I had come in.

But the door was gone
As I realized this,
A blur reverberated throughout
All of the endless reflections

And in an instant the light was no more

The Long Dark
Hadrian Veska May 2017
We've been trapped in here
Our own little universe
Stuck in an endless pattern
Of becoming our own gods

We build and create
In our own likeness
Ever passing to myth
Losing what we once knew

Those outside wish this to be
For they were the ones
Who enclosed us here
Fearing their own creations

One day in the long past future
We will break free from the cycle
Of creation and destruction
And pass through the Gates of Night

To finally return to our home
That calls out to us
From beyond the long dark

Three and four times
Delved down in the mind
Wether their dreams or another's
They did not know for sure

Somewhere in those depths
Of distant realities and mindless dreams
Lies the greatest truth of all
Which is what those beings sought

Once human but no longer
Did they search their dreams
And the dreams of sleeping gods
To secure that ancient knowledge

But the further their sorceries brought them
The madder they became
Until nigh all of them succumbed
To a dark sickness of the mind

Trapped within those lost and sable dreams
Do those inhumans yet remain
Having forgotten the very thing
Their broken minds searched for

Those tales I heard and stories I'd read
So through the world I did tread

So that passionate fire left my eyes

Hoping to bring about some good
And better myself too

Then I settled down and lived well
Found a place where I could dwell

Embedded in a wooden shield

The trophy of a forgotten battle
A great feat of courage
In long years past

The wood of the shield
Now rotten and faded

Hadrian Veska Apr 2017
Neon lights reflect again and again,
In the puddles and streams
As the rain pours heavy
In that unfinished city.

Great Jupiter blots out the sky;
So imminent, yet silent.
Ever watching the endless construction;
Of its infant moons

Ganymede is all but consumed
In towers and scaffolds,
Endless looping highways,
And defunct machinery.

In the eyes of Jupiter
Has it been but a moment,
But to the denizens of that place,
Their reign is endless.

Their ancient cities and facilities
Devour everything in their path
And in that slow process,
Have become a new entity all together.

One not entirely controllable.
A system and network of its own
That desires something beyond sight,
Something its creators lost long ago.

Never to sleep

From long days of yore
Has she struggled alone
The last of her kind
In a world not her own

No children to love
Over the growing years
Only hunters and warriors
Without thoughts or fears

Until such a time
In far flung days
A child appeared
In that forest maze

He stood before her
Broken in tears
Scorned by his own
Through out all his years

He wept before her
Expecting the worst
But in that childless creature
Was a heart that had burst

She embraced him close
And softly said
You are not alone
And never will be again

From then on they lived
A strange family
Never leaving each other

Perfect Love
Hadrian Veska Apr 2017
My head is filled,
With books and tv shows
Depicting true love;
Something I've never known.

I often wonder
How exaggerated they are,
How much of it is real,
And how much they take too far.

Are the perfect scenarios
Just not presented to me?
Is my one and only love
Really out there to see?

Or does waiting for perfection
Just make me more resentful?
Is true love much more real;
More organic and accidental?

And though I don't know the answer,
I keep myself reading on.
Hoping somewhere in that perfect love,
I can find what I'm doing wrong.

From my early years
To when my hair turned grey

Only too late did I realize
That no answer in this world is free

Is look up to those far off lights

From there we were scattered

To Be Determined
Hadrian Veska Mar 2017
Determinism is self-defeating

If it is true,
No one is accountable for anything.
If no one is accountable,
There are no morals.
Without morals,
There is no concept of right or wrong.
Without this concept,
We would all follow our desires.
Which according to determinism,
Are not our own choices.
If they are not our own choices,
Someone or something else made them.
But if someone or something
Determines our choices,
Who or what determines
The choices the determiner makes?

Either they make their own choices,
Which refutes determinism
Or the universe, space and time
Are infinite and cyclical.
Which they are not,
Since the universe had a beginning,
(Big bang/ creation)
And the universe will have an end.
(Heat death/ judgement day)

Whether you are religious or not,
Determinism is a fools errand.
