A Slow Heyoka
They said that it would rain today
but for some reason when it didn’t

I was strangely disappointed.
Nevertheless, my jealousy pursued

like a jewel in the nightlight.
Revelling, repulsive, catastrophic.

The earth opened up and all the flowers fell inside.
They mixed with all the tar and soot and rust and then

made us sigh in awe.

In awe of how quickly a tough decision can be made
on our fates.

Suddenly, abruptly, snapping shut, an elastic
band on the door of the future.
Part of a collaborative project at a local writing retreat I attend. Its not all mine. Can you guess which parts are?

As I sit in this classroom

Listening to keys clattering

Pencils clicking

Feet tapping

Pages flipping

Shuffling feet

Creaking seat

Faint ac, or is that the heater?

Such is unknown to me

For it is all overwhelming

Things so small

Yet so impacting.

Then, from outside

Chatter of children

Wind whispering my very name

Calling me to the freedom of the outdoors

A plane overhead

Announcing its presence

Clicking of a mouse

A pencil dropping

People adjusting in their seats

Drinking water

Back to work

The tap of a foot

The shuffle of paper

Pages turning

Legs shifting positions

Another plane overhead

And all the while,

Here I wonder,

While pages are turning;

What am I learning?

Never can I focus during a test - unless 'tis on the surrounding sounds.
i saw her in my dreams next day she was there
walking down the street long blonde flowing hair
then she came towards me stopped and said hello
i could feel the love as it began to flow.

i told her of my dream she had the same dream too
said the one she saw. looked a lot like you
then she looked at me with her eyes so blue
i fell in love with her i could tell she knew

the girl in my dreams she had come to me
one i always dream of that i always see
sitting my side with the same dream too
dreams we both had now were really true

we walked along together walking side by side
my hand in hers began to gently slide
then we carried on walked a little more
i had such a feeling i never had before.

then we held each other i squeezed and held her tight
holding the girl i dream of each and every night
now she was there with her arms round me
the girl in my dreams that i always see

the girl in my dreams she had come to me
one i always dream of that i always see
sitting my side with the same dream too
sharing love together with a dream come true
I see you in music
notes are steps
closer to you
press play and
we never pause
"music" and "you" can be read as the first words of the next line

Emily Dickinson
1104

The Crickets sang
And set the Sun
And Workmen finished one by one
Their Seam the Day upon.

The low Grass loaded with the Dew
The Twilight stood, as Strangers do
With Hat in Hand, polite and new
To stay as if, or go.

A Vastness, as a Neighbor, came,
A Wisdom, without Face, or Name,
A Peace, as Hemispheres at Home
And so the Night became.

I fall for you
cause my heart needs love to brew
and i am aware
but i started to care
you are heavy fog of the morning
and i am of a kind that blooms in spring
I need you
to love me
cover me in this dew
I can beg you to fall
but i can't hold you at all
you'll wet everyone
but own by none
He loved someone else and I knew it from the start but I don't know why I still want him

It took sixteen years to become acquainted with my old self.

The self that:

Could not write on crumpled papers,
Or sleep in untucked sheets,
Played her scales robotically,
Left no word incomplete.
Labelled all the cupboards,
Books were organized by name,
This was the life I led.
I never knew that it would change.

it took 4 weeks to fall in love with my new self

writes on ollld receipts,
kicks the covers        off the bed
     ~lets my fingers play freely~
not every sentence has an en-
            stores shoes with coffee mugs!!
writes in mArGiNs to save time
                  not all rules need to be   f o l l o w e d
                    not all poems need to

                        sound the same

who knew that little pill
would teach me how to live
not erase the 'me' that showed
but bring out the 'me' that hid
16 years of worry
of obsessive, anxious thoughts
who knew that little pill
would change me
I,
for one,
did not
.
