picked up the phone
there was nobody there
so I took it
paul sheridan Jul 28
she said he should think
about looking at things a little
differently, so he closed one eye
in what she considered to be
a quite infuriating wink
paul sheridan Jul 17
she said you’ve never
understood
me? I didn’t know what she was
talking about    ..
you’re not the man I married

all those years ago, she said

we only met last night! he

    cried

        and clambered out of bed
the city grows bigger every year
I think maybe there are
too many restaurants
death is like gloves
hides all your fingerprints
who knows what
you touched   ..

love can’t be captured in a poem
but if the poem’s any good
it might be set free

when I saw her I fancied her and
thirty odd years later
after we married I still do and
******* woman I still fancy you
not having felt great for
ages one somewhat ..
think you have right
on your side, try spending time with
a few of the
wrong people entirely, darling      ..

aren’t as many second hand
bookshops on the charing cross road as
there were when I was younger
of course, so were they   ..
we rented a room
so cold we went to bed
with our clothes on,
but not for long
the best thing I ever wrote
down your phone number
could tell you were disappointed,
but then,
you tell it so much better   ..

the bed still takes up most of the room
but now there’s more room in the bed    ..

went to the george, just off
borough high street, an old coaching inn,
you can just drink in the past
in here        ..
don’t like restaurants
are full of people
who could have stayed
at home and cooked
opened a bottle of scotch
“how’s that going to help?”
ever tried drinking this stuff
with the lid on    ..

in 1979 I watched vera brittain’s testament of
youth on the BBC and bought the book
and read wilfred owen
and discovered horror and beauty and poetry
please mind the gap to the platform
as you leave the train
comes over the tannoy
must they frighten me again   ..
threw it aside
thinking of course
a poem is never

as good as
it might have been,
though    ..
do you keep pets
because people aren’t
enough for you?
I’ve got a couple of insects     ..

never found that
travel broadens the
mind, I could

be wrong, but I
prefer to stay home
with a book
your underwears me down
with it’s expectation of
fulfilment, but I’m just not in the mood
right now I’m reading

— The End —
