Night’s Breath
moonwood Dec 2024
Cricket’s lullaby
swirls in the sticky night air
and sings me to sleep

Bittercress and blue Veronicas bloom,
The promise of spring's desire.
I've been incubating, wrapped up in
Winter's womb, frozen
Yet still warmed by the fire.
This one was the worst.
The trees still bare,
Proudly naked despite Hades' curse.
I refuse to "move on,"
And I would never dare.
She's my Persephone and I'm Demeter,
So I asked the sirens, wail your song through
The ether and help me find her.
It's almost Easter.
The kids still young enough to hunt
But this doesn't last, just like
Spring herself and life's silly little stunt.
And though I weep for what was lost,
The wheel still turns the bloom,
The fall, the frost.

Iris bloomed for me
in a dream. She said, “Dear girl,
remember yourself.”

Held captive to dreams
Only there your hunger is
ravenous like mine.

It’s not a storm
this longing and grief
that overcomes me
It’s a riptide, ******* and pulling me in
Before I realize I’m drowning and
flailing about as efficient as a
fish on the deck floor
But eventually I’ll yield,
surrender to the unknown
Perhaps the undertow will embrace me before
releasing its grip, swimming off to the next
unsuspecting fish.

A mirror of us,
the Sagittarius moon,
show me my purpose.
