I have you still, my son:
photos, memories,
things you touched,
where you stood,
where you sat,
where you'd been,
where you were at.

I have you still:
tee-shirts, shirts,
wallet, black and leather,
empty now, passport
with your photo inside,
other things of yours
left behind, inherited,
gifts maybe from the dead.

But not the you
I can hug or embrace,
or talk to quietly,
face to face,
not the you
with chuckled laughter,
dry humour and wit,
not any of that,
not one bit.

I have you still:
dreams in black and white
or coloured rather weird
as dreams are, nightmares
walking the dark corridors
of the hospital,
the bed at the end,
you there swollen,
hard of breath,
awaiting death.
A FATHER TALKS TO HIS DEAD SON.

Oh ancient dune
What have thou seen

Through raging storm
In lover’s dream
Of sunny days
Restless nights
Tempest waves
Wayward flights
Winter’s blast
Snow and sleet
Summer’s sun
Soaring heat
Changing tides
Eroding beach

What have you learned
What could you teach

So patiently
Your stand it finds
Without a sound
The passing time
Grasses tall
Sands of white
Shadows reach
Holding tight
Perfect shape
Magic stance
Visionary
True romance
Quietly
So serene

Oh ancient dune
*What have thou seen
In the idleness of the moment
I recollect the beautiful dream
Waves of calmness tide over
Leaving truth along the shore
Once submerged in the depths

She sews

She sews..her needle hot
Stitching her words
Into my thoughts

Repairing a tear
Here and there

A knot drawn tight
Nimble and quick
Thimble silver
Her verse sharp

A rip in the heart
Stitched in time
To stop the flow

My lips sealed
with silken gold
Threading gently
Into the night.

You
Your words
Speak to me
Early morning longings
Soft distant sounds
Far away affections
Lunch hour lingerings
Skyline whispers
Subway quivers
Caressing thoughts
Touching senses
Embracing emotions
Erasing fears
Coaxing smiles
Late night sighs
Speak to me
Your words
*You
And then there were none.

They came and they went..

silent joy simple fun

the starry firmament.

While for words this mind craved

the wind blew unheard

While this ink raved

flew away the singing bird!

The stars got weary of twinkling

real moon turned an imagined one

These blind eyes had no inkling
how they debarred the simple fun.

When they turned to behold

this madness was done

times hid in wrapped fold

And then there were none.

If I could love you forever,
