He stands where silence hums against the grain,
A soldier bound by ghosts behind his eyes,
Steel threads his chest, but not his ache or strain
The faded photos whisper lullabies.
Each taped-up moment clings like prayer to wood,
Though time has thinned what brotherhood once stood.

The camo hugs like armor and like chain,
Yet every fold remembers where he’s bled.
The wall, a shrine to joy not born of pain,
Still leans with shadows of the living dead.
He guards the space where memory dares to tread,
A quiet oath still echoing, unsaid.

The mirror watches with a hollow stares
Not quite a man, not wholly lost to war.
The past reflected, stripped and laid out bare,
Tattooed with names he doesn’t speak any more.
His silence roars where once he swore with pride,
Now draped in years he never set aside.

The brothers in that photograph still grin,
Suspended in a frame, immune to dust.
But he’s the one left carrying memories of them,
Their birthdays, burdens, courage, grit, and trust.
They marched beside him, now he walks alone,
A relic housed in flesh, not yet stone.

So steel your heart, and do not call it brave
This life of war is not a badge to wear.
Each breath he takes, he pulls out of the grave,
Each smile a lie, each laugh a threadbare prayer.
The vest may guard his ribs from a bullet's intent
But never from the hollow grief of death.
Looking at old pictures of my time in the Army, fills me with a weighted sigh of relief and regret. A simultaneous invasion of feelings and remorse.
I'm happy to announce the release of my
latest book of poetry, Sleep Always Calls.
It's available on Amazon, and I read from it on
my YouTube channel.

"Sleep Always Calls is a powerful poetry collection by American poet and author Thomas W. Case. The poetry is raw and gritty. There is honesty and truth in the writing of Thomas W. Case, which is refreshing in today's world of contrived and polished literature. Once you start reading this book, it will be difficult to put it down. The themes range from addiction to heartbreak, and always, a semblance of victory for the downtrodden soul. His creativity and insight are brilliant and fresh in this poetry compilation."

Time when inspiration
Knocked at my door
Its visit always welcome
I would feed it well
All satiated, with a warm heart,
wishing me happiness,
it would gently depart

Now I tend to ignore
As I do the chores,
Or simply while away
An umpteenth time
A sullen face and dewy eyed
Unrevoked
Inspiration gathers dust
At some wanting door
Ocean waves crashing in as
they hit the shore
Crisp, clear air
Bright blue sky
Sandy colored beaches decorated
with remnants of shells
Faint sounds of birds flying overhead
Calming feelings arrive to soothe
Stillness fills the moment
Peace arrives
The body relaxes
Mother Nature’s art
She egresses from a pool of blue and straight into the colorless, Californian dregs of summer.

Each passing plane reminding her how stuck she is.

The question remains whether some people are doomed to just survive, a yearning for freedom following them around, until they learn to numb themselves to such aspirations.

Faraway trains pass by.

The sound in their whistles knowing the events she will litigate with herself for years to come until it empties the contents of her soul.
Sun breaks over the lake
Waking me from my dreams.

Haze thick upon the water
Silent, surreal, calming, serene.

Hard to explain,
waking up alone in nature.

When I was younger, I wanted friends all around.

Bright lights, big cities,
laughter and music abound.

But now I take things slower,
moments not needing to share.

A misty morning sunrise,
Coffee in a kettle,
wood smoke in the air.

Just me and my memories,
moments without a care.

I know I can't stay,
soon I'll have to pack up and leave.

But right here, right now,
It's just God, Nature, and Me.
Learning to be comfortable all alone
with nothing but your thoughts is a hard lesson to learn.
I love my family and friends but it's great to get away from everyone
and everything sometimes.

As the sun sets
And the moon
climbs high
Into the night,
Casting a
translucent sapphire
glow across the land.

I warm my bones
beside the fire.

The solitude speaking
to my very soul.

A child of the night
howls to its lover moon,
I howl back,
and for a moment
two lone wolves
are united
In song.

I drink my coffee
And listen to
His cries I share
His pain.

But do not howl back.
I leave him to his
Mourning.

For just this night
In reflection of fire
and moonlight.

I am at peace with
the world.

I am a Star Voyager though,
 I've never left the ground.

 Traveling through the Milky Way
without making a sound.

There is music here in the desert sky,
 the cicadas drone,
accompanied by,
The coyotes singing in the wind.

As I travel from star to star,
with eyes full of wonder.

The gaseous clouds of Orion
faintly visible here in the deep dark desert night.

While the Pleiades
shine like diamonds,
against a backdrop of swirling black velvet.

The collected warmth
of the desert floor warms my bones
as the wind whips and dances.

The desert is a wonderful place to be alone,
but a hard, hard place to call home.

Come morning,
I'll abandon my Desert respite,
and rejoin the world of men.

But even though I must go,
I know I shall return.

And become a Star Voyager once again.

Thanks.
As I sift through the ashes of our love
Surely it must have burned bright.

For there is no black among the ashes,
Nothing but coal white.

There are no pieces left to gather,
nothing that could reignite a flame.

I search for just one tiny ember,
but only memories remain.

And so I'll take these memories,
along with your name
and give them rhyme.

Reading them in the rhythm of my heart,
a love song in four/four time.

Jenny your love was deeper than the ocean.
It burned brighter than the stars in the sky.

Your Beauty shined upon me like the sun.
And now I'm left alone to wonder why.

This poem, is all I have for kindling,
to try and restart a spark in your heart.

When it's gone it's gone
no light will remain,

and I'll be all alone in the dark.
