dude
you showed the world your scars
and made my pain feel understood
with your words
better than I ever could
Life is so harsh
perhaps that's why
nature gave us
flowers and butterflies
to help us forget the pain
even if only
for a moment.

And I remember thinking—
I wish someone would look at me that way.
As if they had battled it for a lifetime,
Through seasons and snow and sun -
Across cities and oceans and mountains
In innocent youth and wearied age,
As if they had finally surrendered and had no choice but to look.

In the way it takes all a person’s will and strength to look away
And they have been worn down, beaten, bruised
To the point of weakness, of giving up.
And now, all they are left with is their truest self, exposed down to the bone
& no strength to battle the inevitable
Draw of their eyes to mine.

I want someone to look at me as if I am their lifeline,
And their death-bringer.
Someone asked if I know you today

Which was odd

I said no

I only once knew you
And I wish I never knew at all
Love doesn't come and go
like waves,
doesn't change every moment,
nor does it touch only
a part of you.

Love is the ocean –
it drowns you for good.
As I sat in church today,
Couldn’t find words to pray.
Because dear God—if You still hear.
Look down—we’re filled with fear.
You could change this. Couldn’t You?
Just one breath—or a spark or clue.
You are the reason why children still cry,
Why unarmed, hopeless people die.
And there still are wars down here,
Not enough reason for cheer.
I find it really hard to believe,
This is what You would wanna achieve.
Sorry to say, but that’s why,
I believe You are a very well-told lie.
I feel like believing God helps, but God doesn’t.

We sit at the table
and the white curtain
dances in the wind like a veil.
People talk
but I don't really listen.
I watch it flutter
and I see us
taking our vows.
It dances in the wind
like a veil.
Like you.
