If I could reach beyond the veil
Where hidden misery and memories sail,
I'd dip my fingers into your fears
Rippling light through your toughest years.
Down into the chambers of your soul,
Through the spaces bruised and whole,
I'd pour the warmth of countless suns
Until each ill thought breaks and runs.

In your eyes, I see the pain,
Heavy like endless pouring rain.
I see the hurt that time can't mend,
The way your kind soul was forced to bend.
But, when I look at who you are,
Beyond the wounds and all your scars,
I see a light that burns so true
And a brave survivor inside of you.

You had that certain glow
When our eyes first met
Like stars that had learned to shine,
And within your adoring gaze
I found all I had sought
Sparkling like depths of gold.
Time slowed down just for us
As if fate had whispered
Because it wanted us to.
But, now I watch from afar
As emptiness clouds my heart,
Knowing that someone else will bathe
In what I once called my light.

My mind dissects each word you speak,
Like puzzle pieces, I must decrypt.
Each detail stowed and analysed,
Each contradiction memorised.
Your lies will always be uncovered,
As habits form, truth is discovered.
I'll turn your tales all day and night,
Until the pieces fit just right.
So spare yourself, I implore,
I will solve your messy jigsaw.

From a spark, I am reborn,
My golden wings spread like a new dawn,
And fire courses through my veins,
As I become the righteous flames.

Soaring through the ancient skies,
Sacred flares trail as I fly,
Gliding through clouds above,
Glowing with the burning sun.

Years pass as I slowly grow old
And my feathers lose their amber glow.
My strength and fight begin to fade,
My soul is tired and unafraid.

When it is time for my final breath,
with all my strength I face my death.
In my element, the sparks ignite
The end has come to my long life.

Flames consume my flesh and bone,
As I embrace the fire that I become
As burning smoke rises higher,
And I succumb to my funerary pyre.

The fire fizzles and dissipates,
As the embers cool and accumulate,
And through the ashes sparks a flame,
The Phoenix reborn, rises again.

I wrote this poem about the cyclical life, death, and rebirth of the Phoenix - a mythological bird that regenerates from its own ashes.
Enjoy :)

I wake up to the sound of cars
driving through puddles,
Splashing me awake;
Whilst moments ago,
I was dreaming
Of somewhere far away.

The rain should be soothing,
As plump drops beat down
Persistent in their rhythm,
Hammering on the glass
Whilst I hide under covers
And I  do not wish to rise.

My grey blue eyes look for something
to grasp onto in the torrent of my emotions, but I need not look any deeper
than my love for you.

Although, I have despised you,
when you berated my name
under your breathe more than once
but I still found myself loving you again.

Your mindless antics threw me to the wind
when our love was a double-edged sword,
mingling our vigour and passion
as bitter words were spat and scored.

This burning strength of mine
was once a weapon yielded tightly
as my heart beat faster, and my thoughts were once a force to be seldom reckoned with.

Yet, when infuriated I found peace quickly,
and I finally understand why at times
I fought so hard for you,
and why I chose to make a stand.

I did not want to hurt you but,
I longed for you to see
that I wanted you to love yourself
as much as you loved me.

I did not want to hurl my words
and create a storm across an ocean,
but instead to love you as deeply
as the tides of my emotions.

I hear your hollow compliment,
no gilded chains will bind me, see?
Respect my strength;
Please, don’t patronise me.

When someone tells you that your poem is good, but it is a waste of time writing poetry…so rude!
Again, a venting piece, apologies!!
Lizzie Bevis Dec 2024
Enraged clouds of deepening grey
Advance with wind-whipped waters,
As tranquil skies begin to decay.

The fierce wind howls like a ravenous beast
Splintering trees like twigs with its might,
As nature's fury prepares to feast.

Devastation rolls in like a violent dance,
As lightning splits across the darkened sky.
Nothing in its path stands a chance.

Heavy rain slashes through the air,
The surge greedily devours,
Then vomits debris everywhere.

In its wake, the lull exposes the carnage,
And the savage toll we pay in defeat
When we cannot best the weather’s rage.

I can't sleep as the storm is too noisy, so I wrote this instead.

Your heart's language
Is too vast for vessels made of clay,
When your soul speaks of stars and ocean spray.
In mundane realms, when walking alone,
Speaking of kindness in undertones.

Feeling it all too intensely,
When noticing wounds that others mask,
Feeling their pain is too much to ask.
While others shield their eyes in fear,
While you draw their suffering ever near.

Compassion can often feel like a knife,
In this world of thorns measured by love
Which fits you like a borrowed glove.
Yet here you stand, worn yet bright,
In the shadows of a lesser light.

Caring too deeply to turn a blind eye,
You are not broken, just breaking free,
with empathy that others cannot see.
Your rhythm is different, its wild beat,
Makes the earth tremble beneath their feet.

Maybe it’s not that you’re too much,
Or not made to fit, but made to soar,
To crack the shell, to break open the door.
For in this world, naive souls sleep,
Whilst your waking heart feels too deep.

I watch you write,
your pen flowing like a river,
each word a current
that pulls me under.
I am ensnared in your story,
captivated and lost
in the beautiful, broken
and hurting depths of you.

What can I say, you all inspired me!
I love reading your pieces, watching your creativity bloom onto this page.
Thank you for being you. 🙂

Their eyes ignite
With every word,
Each gesture met,
Each story heard.
They lean in close,
They catch each breath,
Captivated between
Each life and death.

Like sunflowers tracking
The morning light,
They watch and follow,
The characters plight.
No greater gift
Could the heavens send
Than souls who yearn
To comprehend.

Leaving it in other hands
A surrender, slow and sure.
A loosening of the tether that stands
Between what we can't endure.

As all who patiently wait
For the lock to disengage,
Each choice becomes a weight of fate
Released from its cage.

A sword will cause a decisive mark
That makes permanent our choice.
The final stroke, a light in dark,
Gives silence now a voice.

The stockings were hung,
but they fell off the wall,
The tree was so crooked,
it threatened to fall.
The cookies for Santa
got burnt to a crisp,
and Grandpa was snoring
with quite a loud lisp.

The cat ate the tinsel
and their whiskers did glow,
while reindeer-shaped lights
blinked sporadic and slow.
The wrapping paper ran out
halfway through,
so presents got covered
in the old Daily News.

But Christmas still came
with its usual cheer,
despite all the chaos
and Dad's missing beard.
For love and good spirits
cannot be undone,
by festive mishaps
and misguided fun.

They mistake my softness for weakness,
Like petals scattered in storms of hurt;
Not seeing how deep my roots extend
Through layers of wisdom and lessons learned.

Each kind word I choose to speak
Is backed by mountains moved in silence;
Each tender touch I dare to give
Springs from battles fought with resilience.

I've learned that armour weighs down the spirit,
Thorns can wound the hand holding the stem;
While my quiet strength flows like morning light,
Warming others without consuming them.

So let them wonder at my gentleness,
Let them question my peaceful stance;
Because I have found that mighty rivers
Flow with grace and not arrogance.

In a world of sharpened daggers,
I choose to be the sheltering tree,
Not because I cannot withstand the storm,
But because I’ve learned to just simply be.

My strength lies in understanding
That my heart does not need to prove,
The power that sustains its caring beat
And the quiet force that dares to love.

You read my poetry,
then turned away,
as if the words
had nothing to say.
Each line was a pulse,
it was a part of me,
yet you drift on past,
too blind to see
that my verses ache,
hoping to be heard,
yet silence lingers,
louder than each word.
The ink may fade,
but my feelings remain,
as I laid my heart bare,
was it all in vain?

Watching gondolas glide
on murky mirrors
as I wander alone,
over bridges arched high,
immersing myself in the culture
of this jewel of a lagoon.
I'm passing over canals,
watching couples hand in hand,
in love as red as the bricks.

But, why is Venice split in two
when it is the city of love?

The Grand Canal must agree,
as she too wonders through
the sun drenched afternoon;
Until dusk welcomes
masked figures in gold leaf,
dancing past in capes
like thieves stealing hearts
in the magic of the Venetian night.

©️Lizzie Bevis
Another of many poems written on my travels, I wrote this one when I was 18 years old, I believe I was sitting in St Marks Square drinking a cup of coffee at the time.

Random fact: The Grand Canal is shaped like a question mark…I loved how I incorporated this into the poem too.

Venice is truly breathtaking.

In passing hours,
the clock unwinds,
as efficiency dissolves
into wasting time
and with idle hands,
the moments slip,
each second lost,
the clock still ticks…

As they continue to believe
that there is plenty of time
to fulfil and achieve
some sort of half-arsed
productivity?!

First breaths taken, gentle cries,
under watchful parents’ eyes.
The first sweet taste of mother's milk
she cradles skin as soft as silk.
Tiny fingers reach and curl,
as a new life greets this changing world.

Unsteady steps lead to tumbles down,
tear-stained cheeks and a fading frown;
Bruised knees bleeding on the ground,
their brave face crumpling at the sound.
Kiss the hurt and dry those tears,
hug away the pain and fears.

Playground skirmishes leave a trace,
young hearts grapple with their place,
as games and friendships shape their days,
exploring life in myriad ways.
Reading tales and counting stars,
as time slips swiftly through youthful hours.

Changes come in the undertow,
As pre-teen tempests start to blow.
Mirrors now become their cage,
with self-doubt writing every page.
Finding paths through storms within,
as adolescent shifts begin.

Teenage years bring deeper thought
and independence fiercely sought.
Screaming words they don’t quite mean,
piercing hearts of parent and teen.
Growing pains lead to hearts that yearn,
and life's harsh lessons left to learn.

To guide them through each perilous phase,
and love them through their changing days.
Watch them sleep like years before,
until their world stops outside your door.
Time slips too quickly through growing hands,
leaving a void that no one understands.

I'm reflecting on my own personal experience as a mother watching my children grow.
The time passes so quickly and before you know it, they are leaving home.
Time really is so precious.

When the weight of the world feels heavy,
And shoulders slump beneath its load,
Carrying on becomes an unwanted burden,
Yet resilience demands that we never let go.

Sometimes I dream of laying it all down,
To live and breathe beyond these confines,
To shed the weight of others' expectations,
To find solace, to rest, and unwind.

Even mountains must rest in their valleys,
And oceans retreat before kissing the shore.
Why must I maintain this false rally,
When nature knows the strength of pause?

So let me be both, the warrior and wanderer,
The shelter and storm, the sun and the rain.
Resilience isn't found in constant endurance,
But in knowing when to try again.

Some doors are meant to stay unopened,
Some questions left silent in the air,
Some chapters end without conclusion,
Some paths often lead to nowhere.

Not every story needs an ending,
Not every wound needs words to heal,
Not every heart requires mending,
Not every truth needs a big reveal.

There's wisdom in quietly leaving,
There’s grace in letting mysteries be,
There’s peace in simply believing
That what must flow will find the sea.

So loosen your grip on expectations,
Release the need to understand,
Accept the silent explanations,
Because it is not a part of your plan.

Looking toward the rim of his saucer,
The cat decided to be,
a fearless mighty mouser,
and set his dreamies free.

And so the walls began to ripple,
With a milky veil to drown his woes,
As he bound over the armchair,
To escape his imaginary foes.

Then a wild low growl decreed,
While the humans stirred in dismay,
His claws spoke of an ancient prophecy
As catnip led his mind astray.

The wide-eyed and wild, blur of fur,
Ricocheted off the walls with ease.
He is a feline ninja on a mission,
Defying every law of gravity.

His battle cry shook the room to its core,
As he zoomed without a care,
Through the fog of his catnip high,
Sending dreamies flying everywhere.

Through soft static,
the silence hums,
as a steady tide,
where chaos succumbs
and white noise swaddles us
in its soothing embrace
drowning out the clamour,
creating tranquil space,
tuning into the comforting drone,
as peaceful slumber finally comes.

blooms into I love you,

This morning brings another count
of ailments that have attacked me,
as viral matter drifts unseen in the air
impossible to keep track of.

The mirror shows my tired face,
so pale and paper-thin,
while symptoms wear my body down
and make my poor head spin.

I am too weary now to catalogue
each ache, each pain, each sigh;
The simple truth is all that's left
and I'm barely getting by.

This not-so-wonderful existence
drags its feet along,
my routine is all out of tune,
as I snuffle a half-forgotten song.

I'm death warmed over, so they say
though warmth feels far away,
as I shiver through the unbearable hours
of yet another long and miserable day.

I spent today fine-tuning it and I think that it is good enough to share...but I'll keep my germs to myself!

Crystal stars pierce evening skies,
While breath clouds dance and fade away,
As shortened winter daylight dies,
And frost-touched branches gently sway.

The air nips sharp at nose and chin,
As nature dims its weary sight,
And drowsy shadows usher in
The softest curtain of the night.

Each creature seeks its quiet den,
As time itself moves sweet and slow.
While winter whispers, once again,
Beneath the alabaster snow.

Through silver webs of frozen lace,
The world drifts deep in winter's spell,
As sleep wraps earth in soft embrace,
While dreams deep within us dwell.

The season calls with gentle lure,
Through frosty breath and starlit nights,
As heavy eyelids find their cure
In winter's soft and silver lights.

Beneath this blanket crystal-deep,
Where dreams and snowflakes softly fall,
The earth and I begin to sleep,
While winter's hushes gently call.

The world grows still and crystal clear,
Beneath the serene and darkened sky,
As peaceful slumber draws us near,
To winter's softest lullaby.

Sometimes,
When I am with my demons or angels,
and drowning alone in silence,
I find solace in my inauspicious life.

Sometimes,
Solitude is the only place
where I can remain contemplative,
as thoughts freely flow within my mind.

Sometimes,
There is beauty in quiet introspection,
my unvoiced passions are never denied,
but must I remain unloved, as time slowly slips by?

Is my mind merely irresolute?
Torn into pieces by ambivalent thought,
at war with itself, until reason intervenes...

and then I begin to write.

I stand behind the boundary you shattered,
Watching fragments of our trust scatter.
No mason's hands will I let rebuild
What you alone chose to break and spill.

Peace rests within my steadfast walls,
While your guilt beyond my border calls.
You crossed the line drawn in the sand
This distance now, I understand.

No architect of reconciliation will I be,
For bridges burned weren't burnt by me.
Some bonds, were broken by your choice,
They need no repair and no voice.

I rest content in knowing where I stood,
While you stepped over where you should.
So let it be; this space between,
Because I'm standing where I've always been.

It's not the stillness of the mornings
or the nights that stretch too long,
not the silence in the hallway
or in the memories that linger on.

It’s not the scent of your perfume fading,
or finding strands of your grey hair,
it's not the teacup on the table waiting
or the full cushions on your vacant chair.

The hardest part, I understood too late,
it isn't counting the days apart
but in the permanence of your absence,
and this persistant ache in my heart.

It's not the missing, or the longing,
or in your presence that we lack,
but with a heavy understanding
that you are never coming back.
