The Train
RandleFunk Sep 2020
Into the night ‘neath the setting sun, the carriages shudder and creak
The chains and the hooks and wooden ribcage in the shadows you shall not seek
The jagged steel spine in twisted agony roars a mighty shriek
With oil like blood spattered and staining from an engine beyond antique

How many souls walked the dread path, above that abyssal fault?
With the stars spinning and hissing across a moonless godless vault
The fireman shovels hopes and dreams into a boiler of cursed basalt
On the track of teeth a-chattering, the locomotive that time cannot halt

Past cliffs of bleak stone pillars where things unseen flit and slither
The grim driver pushes onwards, his boney arm keen to deliver
the passengers, fares paid in full with a price that will make you sHiVer
Their faces stare in horrified calm as the train clatters over the River -

Roiling and burning beneath the flesh bridge convulsed in tormented pain
The engine lets out a piercing scream in bone chilling haunted refrain
In the sky above the Old Ones watch, a visage that will drive you INSANE
This hallow’s eve, pray before bed that you don’t awake on the Train

“We are watching”
Earnest scorn filled protesters
hold earnest scorn filled placards
Cynical journalists jostle
Meanwhile
Hyenas bay and jeer
smeared in blood and oil
They rut with fashion models
snort dubious powders
Untouchable and unassailable
as the world catches fire.
To protect the whole species
is regrettably not in our DNA

Beach
RandleFunk Mar 2020
Crystal waters shimmer bright
Emerald shards piercing loam
Gull calls cross spiral heights
Sun ablaze, cerulean dome

Laughter floats into the air
Shining pins above stained glass
Lonely castles crumble there
Fireflies spark but never last

Zephyr shifts glittering grains
Shiver gainst the gloaming
Tidal black in dark refrain
Losing grip on all knowing

Labyrinth
RandleFunk Oct 2022
Lost in labyrinths
conjured catacombs
You deftly passed me
a silken rope
Took my hand, lead the path
Dragged me up that
lethal *****
You infuriate in countless ways
Enthrall me with your
witchery
Your gentle gaze firmly held
Behind your eyes
a mystery

Summer
RandleFunk Oct 2022
Blinding stardust pours through your hair
Butterflies dance through warm lav’nder air
Spinning, cool grass tickles my feet
Furtive green pools of thine eyes meet
Soft cinnamon lips taste so sweet
Gamut soars, my heart skips a beat

Encrusted in jewels of wonder
Shards of light entomb its slumber
A gilded box fortified
Horrors whisper from inside

Hoisted up, smugly regarded
Coveted instead of guarded
Contained furies writhe and rage
Never unlock this subtle cage

Aren’t you curious just to see?
These rules don’t apply to me
Foolish men with hearts of stone
Hell unleashed is what you own

Marooned
RandleFunk Jun 2021
Drowned
in seas
of possibilities past
Washed up
like ragged flotsam

Blinking awake
on the shores of the Now
beads of water
on my spectacles
shine like jewels
in the golden dawn light
The beach is haunted
with a lonely beauty

The ship was unsinkable
as the Titanic
Torn to pieces
in the early hours

The jungle line looms
ahead, coiling green
Unknowable, filled
with dangers unseen

The Gate
RandleFunk May 2020
Dream a dream of dulcet calm, past a rubicon unseen
drifting through an iron gate, motes of ash gleam

Stare into your mirror eyes, that alchemy amiss
iris an event horizon before a roaring abyss

That funereal passage enshrines a single lyric
“Arbeit Macht Frei”, that victory, somehow pyrrhic
Thoughts on VE day

Nuance
RandleFunk Sep 2020
The texture in the grain of a polished wooden table
The iridescent vision-defying blue of a flower petal
The pungent base and delicate zing of freshly ground cardamom
The sonorous melancholic resonance of a cello
The golden warmth of a late September sun in a crisp cloudless sky
The silken reflections of wet cobblestones in dancing blue light
The earthiness of dust in a timeworn attic
The rough warmth of a leather photo album cover
Your lop-sided half smile

Beginnings
RandleFunk Nov 2020
Spearing morning gloom
over mist clung forest slopes
Rose light kisses your skin

Sparrows flit chittering
among arches of umber and gold
Heavens powdered sapphire

Break your cage
with a warm wildflower breeze
Begin your day anew

Stream of Time
RandleFunk Oct 2024
Rivers of gold and red
collide o’er carpets of must
Flow to frozen fronds
caught in shimmering
shrouded white mists

Melting in longer days
to heavy dewy scents
of saps and green alchemy
twisting, sensing, exploring
transcending nights

Starlit glass sparkles
reflecting the roar
of maelstrom mirages
the could-be but-isn’t
trapped and impatient
like a pacing lioness

Icarus soars sunwards
Fly youthful hubris
A fool’s lament for
spent sands so ruthless

A shade past apogee
Still burning bright -
not yet succumbed
to gravity’s fight

Time’s shrewd eye
twinkles with glee
Streak o’er the horizon
still unable to see

Perilous predicament
for the prodigal son
Dawning too late
Impact in three two one

The Hollow
RandleFunk Oct 2024
I hear their voices calling
from arboreal gloom
The things in the forest
luring children to their doom

The pumpkin faces grimace
glistening in the dusk
Mist rising in the darkness
A cloying hanging must

A cursed hollow in the depths
Gnarled faces in the bark
Gentle songs waft on the wind -
then screaming in the dark

Villagers search frantically
kin missing from their bed
a hopelessness and sorrow
and endless, gnawing dread
Happy Halloween 🎃

The dying light
RandleFunk Sep 2
A dim half-world
of riven skittering skies
under three shining stars
Scattered smoking ruins
mark the graves of potential
The poison in my veins
from pre-recorded history
Utterly inescapable

Seas of sorrow
give unquenchable thirst
Catharsis but
an unreachable headland.
Ramparts of reason and rationale
blow away like tinder
in the thin listless breeze

The only path forward
a trudge into the gloom.
Wolves skulk
their eyes gleaming
from surrounding shadows
They know only blood.
Patiently, relentlessly
waiting for that first
Bite

Take a drag of my cigarette
Look up
and smile bitter sweet
For having found
those beautiful stars
for a time
I’ve known peace
