the mind often traces back
to events of the past
the recall of these memories
endure and last

the day Johnny started school
in nineteen sixty three
the night the possum
jumped out of the old gum tree

the memories flood back
they are relived for a while
the ones that made you cry
so too the ones that made you smile

they are stored in the mind
for our recollection
pictures in our photograph galleries
our own personal collections

this is nostalgia
reflecting on events of past days
bought to mind every so often
when our thoughts are in recall phase
me thinks a sonnet is very hard to write
putting it on paper doth require skill
one must show the ease of a carefree kite
whence applying each and every ink spill
there's no room for bad mistakes being made
the formatting should carry the right tone
as stated by Will who knew of poetic trade
penning many hundreds in iambic cone
one did dare Shakespeare's enduring trail
on attempting his fourteen line layout
oh yes the challenging road did prevail
depicting a time honoured rhyming rout
with couplet concise one shall fly away
leaving a poem of red roses in May
me thinks a sonnet is very hard to write

one must show the ease of a carefree kite
whence well applying each and every ink spill
there's no room for bad mistakes being made

penning many hundreds in iambic cone
one did dare Shakespeare's enduring trail
on attempting his fourteen line layout
oh yes the challenging road did prevail
depicting a time honoured rhyming rout
with couplet concise one shall fly away
leaving a poem of red roses in May
Red sentinels stood in the valley lands
This timeless place parched by baking sun
These soldiers weathered in wearing strands
They'd resisted the climes  endless run
This battle a monument to being so brave
Holding the line in such a stoic posture
Of the quarter they'd guard unto the grave
No lasting winds changing their composure
From dawn to dusk these feisty sandstone troops
Have taken on the climate's daily strikes
To attest the triumph of lasting hoops
Which have defied the assaulting spikes
They've shown heroics in this their fight
Waging it with an enduring might
refilling the shoes
of truly great men
is a task not
within lesser men
the shoes too large
for them to comprehend
a depth and breadth
so extraordinary of rend

these shoes are super
in their magnitude
of which a menial foot
could never altitude
to think other wise
shows no aptitude
fittings of this calibre
require plenitude

trying them on
for size why do that?
a cobbler would laugh
off his Dorset hat
knowing full well
there's a gauging bat
where men of capacity
are expansive of tat

shoe filling takes
much adroitness
just ask they who
possess its smartness
tis a gravitas of such
encompassing vastness
as quoted by the
sagacious George Furness
she held a prized position
in the cottage garden bed
on sighting her beauty
men would turn their heads

of rich red glory
of ravishing rogue
of such sublime hue

enticing were her petals
enthralling her perfume
comely twas the ardor
she excited in a man's plume

as she swayed in the soft breeze
as the sun shone upon her bloom
men became entranced
by her tantalizing loom

the
power
of
her
flower
alluring
bewitching
the
regal red rose
so
charming
she held a prized position
in the cottage garden bed
on sighting such a beauty
men would thrall to her stead

of rich red glory
of ravishing rogue
of an exquisite hue

enticing were her petals
wonderful their scent
comely was the ardour
they so splendidly lent

as she swayed to the drifting soft breeze
the sun shone upon her bloom
men became entranced
by her gorgeous loom

the power of her flower
so
attractive
the regal red rose's essence
so
seductive
now that the duchess of Sussex
has been incorporated into the
firm
she must wear regulation tights
which will make her legs
squirm

before she wed Harry she'd show
an excessive bit of shin
skin
this is no longer possible at garden
parties inside the palace's
inn

a strict dress code was imposed
on every component of
attire
for queen Betty wants Meghan
properly decked out to
admire

we can expect more formal kit
being part of her
wardrobe
when she travels around the world
representing England's finest
lobe
no delusions
no illusions
truthfulness
is in the glasses
reflection
its eye is sharp
keen and observes well
the object before it
cannot dispute
what it has to say
the glass deciphers
all the information
in front of it
in a most
accurate way

mirror you are a friend
mirror you see me
for what I am
mirror I can depend
on your incisive eye's sight
mirror you've
a grand ability
to shed an infinite
beam of light
all that you convey
back to me
is a wealth of
honesty

you knew that I was
bad and very naughty
as a teen
when I looked into your glass
you said I'd been mean
to Christine
you also knew
of my propensity
to give all sorts of excuses
to the local shop owner
about why I'd not wiped
the counters
over
you were onto me

the class of a mirror
never tells a lie
on its candor
I can rely
who of us
can remember a time
when our lives were normal
of chime

the advent of Covid-19
put paid to everything
whereupon we were ******
into a malady's ring

still mask wearing is
mandatory
so too quarantining ever
compulsory
and not to forget the lockdowns are
obligatory

on a pandemic occuring our
daily routines aren't set in stone
for we've got to be more
adaptably prone

the scourge of the virus
has been intrusive
it's affected the world's population
by being so disruptive

we all hark back to the days
of free movement
and we're looking forward
to an existence of improvement
REM moments
are where dreams begin
under the eye-lids
the activity pulses
with movement
all that's seen
is quite extraordinary
you're climbing an unconquerable mountain
and the ascent is so effortless
nothing hampering
what you've always
had in mind
this vision so live like
all your night imaginings
materialize

men and women
over the ages
have bought their dreams
to fruition
the first step
originated
in nocturnal reverie
as they strove forward
on successes golden road

yep them dreamers
of the REM set
achieving much
through accessing the mind's
phantasmagorical corridors
remuneration is the key
in attracting more students
toward a teaching degree

over the past few decades
there's been a drop off
in people wanting to undertake
these university courses

schools are feeling
the shortage pinch
where primary and secondary
teacher positions
cannot be filled

teaching is a noble profession
which should receive better pay
so as the drift from its lesson's
won't keep walking away

if the matter of wages
isn't urgently addressed
our education departments
will become more depressed

teachers are a society's most
valuable human resource
and not having enough of them
is so adverse in recourse
there once was a woman named Mrs Brown
who bought all the real estate in Milltown
she offered renters inexpensive rent
for this was her benevolent bent
Mrs Brown's rental pricing was most enticing
of a repeat image he did employ
which was akin to an advertisement
this being the artist's own singular ploy
did he do it for some little amusement
in galleries these very works can be seen
where they will feature an alike object
as if the viewer needed a copy screen
to understand the picture's subject
a dozen or more on the white background
they displayed a famous maker's name
who did blend the tasty liquid's abound
that was captured in a pop artist's frame
on this night I've written about the man
known far and wide for depicting a can
replicas oft go on display
reproductions of the real thing
recast in an aping array
ripping off the principle's ring

every now and then they'll be seen
espousing that they're genuine
e'en taking credit for the breen
ergo this be not of true line

verily stealing other's word art
very little conscience do they show
villains are those of thieving cart
vilification we pour on their glow

eyes on the look out always glean
embezzling plagiarist's grotty hands
ever looting original bean
endlessly making phoney grands
a new inception at Hello Poetry
has taken off in a big way
the button is employed
every waking moment of the day

the inventor of this state
of the art contraption
has made it such a
desirous attraction

we've all become expert
at giving the icon a press
which is a tool that
was installed to impress

Hello Poetry is well ahead
of the rest of the pack
with this innovative
idea stashed in its sack

one must be judicious
in using this mechanism
as a poem can be conveyed
to the heights of enthusiasm

no doubt the re-post ****
is an ingenious piece of gear
and aren't we so blessed
to have it right here
the funding for scientific research
has had a pruning of late
lab trials cannot be taken off
the government's slate

the men in the treasury office
have got their reckoning wrong
budgets mustn't be skimmed
so valuable research can prolong

discovering an effective remedy
for a diseases or ailing plight
is something that doesn't happen
at the speed of light

it takes years to develop
a drug treatment which will heal
and our medical researchers
require a better budgetary deal

a shortfall in funding
shall impair the researcher's vital work
sustain government support
is needed for them to accomplish their work

without a handsome pledge
research teeters on the edge
Mankind has a dark persona on show
Tis this day manifest in glummest of glow
We're bearing witness to horror and strife
On terrain distant from our turf patches
Arms deployed in ghastly dispatches
We've seen these awful actions in days past
Weapons involved with maddening blast
Theater of battle on Iraq's soil is rife
Cessation of fire not on horizon
Men of war have compunction to go on
We're seeing the gloom of munition round
Too many people are becoming casualties
Arms bringing numbers of fatalities
Mankind's gun does continually resound
hungry for the tons of resources
that lay beneath the
ground
hungry for them and looking
to find what else can be
found

the hunger is never ending
we're consuming more and more
the hunger doesn't abate
as if there's a colossus galore

the world's population
exhausting the
endowment
the world's population
eating every crumb of
nutriment

yet the day will arrive
when our precious resources
aren't readily at hand
they'll be depleted in supply
running down to a level
that won't service demand

too hungry the population
too hungry the  population
R-Riches which get extracted from the earth's trove
E-Ever constantly they are needed by humankind
S-Ships transport them across the vast blue seas
O-Ore of coal and oil of petroleum firing industry
U-Urban and non-urban areas reliant on them
R-Resources supplying a country's consuming population
C-Companies always looking for more and more reserves
E-Every day we over use these irreplaceable commodities
S-Soon they'll decrease to a sparse amount

a lullaby
of soft falling drops

into sleep
the eyes and mind float
to the dulcet sounds
of the rain's rocking boat

drifting into a land
of slumbering dreams
where the pitter patter
lulls one into a restful stream
Overrated is the word that comes to the fore
To tell of that woman's particular store
The products she vends aren't all that fab
Most of them have a dull look which is so drab

She may need to take stock of her inventory
Then thoroughly evaluate its retail credibility
The purchasers are wising up to her trade
They've become disenchanted with her escapade

To-day her shop soiled item went on sale
Few customers bought what was in her bail
Her sales pitch fell upon deaf ears
All that she offered for sale meet with load jeers

Store owners such as her have no excuse
For attempting to sell the dregs and refuse
The customer never outlays a dollar for trash
They prefer value for their hard one cash

The numbers of keen buyers aren't of a glut
Soon her second rate business shall be shut
Retail vending must be up to customer satisfaction
If not store owners can be put out of action
the webmaster has
become quite the recluse
he's been away without
offering a viable excuse

it was back in March
that he fled from this egress
not issuing any of us
a forwarding address

on Tuesday we sent
out twenty four scouts
to ascertain intelligence
as to his whereabouts

but the search party had
no good news to impart
all of them were
so disconsolate of heart

the domain is rather
down in the dumps
since our webmaster
pulled up his stumps

we are desirous of him
returning to home ground
it will be such a relief knowing
he's safe and sound

I can't wait to take retirement from my job
the day in day out grind makes me sob
after forty odd years of laboring real hard
I'll be a proud carrier of  pensioner's card

to put the feet up and relax will be so grand
no longer will I be at a job's constant demand
twill be a fantastic celebratory day
the day I give all my labor's away
there's a retirement home
located in the state of Delaware
and it wishes to have
Joe Biden residing there

Joe would really
enjoy a place like that
for he could sleep all day long
as a dozing cat

the strains of office
are beginning to tell on him
and were he ensconced
within the home's rim
those heavy burdens
wouldn't trouble him

given that Joe
is advancing in age
the time has come for him
to turn the retirement page
a revealing confession
I shall make to all of you
it pertains to the variety
of work that I do

in a plush executive suite
I've never ever sat
only top income earners
get to hold this nice bat

the mop and bucket
are my tools of trade
which I've employed
for almost four decades

each week I acquaint myself
with a cob-webbing broom
to remove the spider's silken threads
that accumulate in office rooms

the cleaning profession
is no leisurely walk in the park
as I'm on duty at sparrow ****
and after the hour of dark

one day I hope to retire
from scrubbing and dusting
my worn fingers and maid's knees
are fast succumbing to rusting

being tied behind
the polishing machine's purr
is the pit of pits
and certainly a hard spur

in a few weeks
my annual holidays shall arrive
twill be a pleasure
to go on a month long skive

old forms will never go out of fashion
if poets keep scribing them onto the page
there's timelessness in their long staying stage
as seen by writers who hold a passion
tonight one reprises the sonnet's stock
bringing past master back for a re-run
so readers twill enjoy couplets of fun
e'en including some lines that shall rock
let not tradition fade on the paper

well into a modern era's draper
penning the craft of the lasting refrain
whereby we'll see them always reviving

we who write in rhyme
all have a rhyming good time
it's because we rhyme
that we're happy all the time

our many lines of rhyme
speak in a manner so sublime
we'll only ever adopt rhyme
for it's truly a meter sublime*

the regular beat of rhyme
is a shared paradigm
all praise we give to rhyme
*so awesome a paradigm
a thick shroud of fog
covered the sun's bright cog
in a most murky clog
keep dancing
to the rhythm of life
let your every step
be a beating fife

you'll feel well ensconced
in the groove
on partaking of its
tremendous move

never stop dancing
stay the round the clock tempo
don't break for a pause
cause the dance has a long way to go

tap dancing
is perfectly okay
and you can change it to
a waltzing sway
and you might like
to disco or jitterbug
on another day

the rhythm of life
is so good for the soul
and it's a dance
of peerless extol
on the back porch
a planter stand sits

the seedlings sprouting
with much vigor

a good harvest

the Labor Party is in the doldrums
thanks to Julia's **-hum humdrum
she is a liability out in the electorate
the numbers for her aren't all that great

the caucus should put Kevin back in charge
as he has  better chance of obtaining vote large
but with Julia the prospects are not very bright
she is viewed by the constituents as a blight

the Labor Party isn't smelling as sweet as a rose
as the polls have consistently said Julia is on the nose
the electorate have a penchant for Kevvy boy
reinstating him to the top job would be a tactical ploy

the Labor Party hasn't much time for making hay
the Federal Election is inching closer by the day
bring back Kevin he'll make up for lost yards
with Julia at the wheel a win isn't on the cards

the Labor Party must listen to the voting public
and use a little common sense and a little logic
Julia must be quickly shunted to the side
so the Labor brand can into power again ride
in the first race at Newcastle
the favorite got a hiding
other horses in the field
ran to the beat of solid riding

from the get go the favorite
was placed under the gun
he used up too much of his petrol
in the fast paced run

punters were furious
with the jockey in the pigskin
for he was supposed to pilot
the horse to a glorious win

at the start of the race
he applied too much speed
to stay in touch with the horses
who were out in the lead

when the field got between
the six and seven hundred meter pegs
it was apparent that the favorite
had no power left in his four legs

though he ran close to the inside rail
throughout the whole race
his performance turned out
to be a trainer's nightmarish disgrace

the jockey was given
strict riding instructions before the event
hold a steady clip and save the horse
from becoming too spent

but alas the race plans went
terribly awry and well off course
which ensued that a conquest
was obtained by another horse

as a child I so delighted
in things of a mechanical nature
all the moveable parts
did fascinate for hours
one of my toys
who had the name Susie
was the most fascinating of all
when you placed her
in a reclining position
her eyes would shut
as if she were ready
to turn the lights out
when I'd place her
in a vertical position
her eyes would be wide open
in an endeavor to research
what was going on
within Susie's head
I took the vegetable knife
out of the kitchen draw
and proceeded to cleave open
the plastic molding
which held the both sides
of her head together
on getting access
to the moveable parts
I discovered she had a lever
that would drop
and cause her eyes to shut
whence in a horizontal lie
and if she were in a upright stance
her eyes would be as open as a shed door
on mother catching me
prizing Susie's head apart
she made me glue
her head back into
its rightful position
were the right numbers to be drawn tonight
this ticket holder would be as happy as a kite in flight

a lot of cash I'd have to spend
and not a cent of it would I have to apprehend

there is a feeling coursing in my old veins
it is telling me that a lottery win shall soon rain

I'll be clued to the television set tonight
watching to see if the numbers are right

should a dream win be on the cards for me
I call in tomorrow and let you all know of my glee

I'll hit a hundred percent shale

and the dashed thing had me on the hop
all my time was spent saying hello and goodbye
I had to tell the person on the other end I must fly

those telephone marketers are an insistent lot
they are more pesky than a horse fly bot
not for one minute did they leave me alone
ring ring ring went the overbearing telephone

to get some peace from the telephone's hassling
I unplugged the ruddy rampant thing
one is fearful of reconnecting it to the socket

the ripened hues
of rich tans leaves did fall
from the maple tree's boughs
on that autumn day
ripples of love
touched my heart's shore
and there they stayed
forever more

twas a delight
they did remain
divine feelings
of security

the ripples
concourse through my body
with an enduring
quality

love rippling
so deep within
love rippling
in every pore of my skin
love upon my shore
love rippling
store on store

the conjunction of feelings
you bring so strong
they'll ever
linger on
