The Lonely Hearts Club
Ann M Johnson Oct 2013
I went out with a friend for a night on the town
She said you are single, you should mingle
I know just the place you should try The Lonely Hearts Club
She dropped me off something came up she had to run, she said have fun, call me when your done
I found a seat looked at the menu, saw that prices were cheap and placed an order
The place was in disorder the music was too loud, having dinner for one did not seem to fun
I decided to wait until dinner was through to see if things would improve
I saw that some poor guy nearby spilled his drink all over a gal close to him
To make matters worse he walked up to me, He smelled of alcohol and cheap cigars
He blurted out that he thought he would take a change and ask me to dance
He also exclaimed that he was also looking for romance and asked for my name
I told him I am choosy because I'm no ******  I'm holding on waiting for Mr Right someday he will be in my sight
I called my friend for a ride home, I left The Lonely Hearts club with my dignity intact
Sometimes when my friend and I go for a night out around town we get bugged by weird guys.
This story/ poem is inspired by that.

If This was My day Job
Ann M Johnson Oct 2013
If this was my day job, I would have many hours to write
I would have time to ponder the right words to find the perfect rhyme
I would at times work late at night
I would dream of nouns , verbs and adjectives
I would have many poems and stories as well filling up many notebooks and computer folders
I would have more readers and faithful followers of my poems
I would have schedules and deadlines to abide by and maybe autographs to give
I would be living my dreams
It  seems that it is best after all to be content with what I have, great friends like you to share my poems with!

When I Am With You
Ann M Johnson Feb 2014
I love you more each day.
I thank God for you when I pray.
When I am with you
My tears go away.
My sorrows turn to joy.
I love you more and more.
When you look at me my knees feel week.
You calm me when you speak.
I feel special when you're close to me.
Your love for me is all I see.
I thank you that I can be myself
when I am with you.
I long to be closer too you.
I feel safe in your arm,
safe from any harm.
I'm happy when you are around me.
Your gentle kisses and hugs surround me.
I'm inspired in my creativity.
I'm touched by your sensitivity.
I feel more alive.
I feel like I can thrive,
not just survive.
When I am with you.
I once wrote this as a Valentine's Gift for a boyfriend.
I thought you might like it my friends.

Searching For Inspiration
Ann M Johnson Jun 2016
Searching for inspiration where can it be found?
Searching for inspiration while glancing on the ground when
deep in thought.
I look within to see what I might find coming up empty
I continue this quest
I desire only what is best.
I look in the face of family and friends
I glance above and seek strength
I read your poems to see what message they hold my poetry friends.

I suddenly realize that I'm not all alone in this poetic sea
true inspiration is not all up to me.
It surrounds me but often seems unseen
It is found in the wind, earth ,air and sea
It can be found while we are awake or asleep.
It can be found above or here on earth.
It can be found in both public
or in solitary places.

It can be found in the loving faces of family or friends.
It can be found in poetic pages or in printed books.
It can be heard in favorite music that lifts you up.
It can be found in an inspiring speech.
It may be found in the words of a favorite teacher that is remembered throughout the years.
For some, it may be the words of a favorite preacher that offers encouragement and is inspirational.
For others being out in nature in a natural cathedral provides ample poetic inspiration to last for years to come.
It can be found in heartbreak or emotional turmoil that inspires you to turn your scars into stars that shine brightly for others to see.
It may be found through both love and loss.
It can be found despite the cost to you and me.
May inspiration help us weather all the storms that this life holds.
May inspiration be found in all of us  may it continue to strengthen and help us grow not only as writers but in life too.

Would You Still Love Me?
Ann M Johnson Jul 2013
Would you still Love me if my mind should wander, or consider my words with few points to ponder?
Would you still Love me if my teeth should rot, or would you think of things I haven’t got.
Would you still Love me if you saw me in pain, or would you not feel the same?
Would you still Love me if my hair was grey, or would you think of my better days?
Would you still Love me if you saw me in sorrow, or would you be too busy with your plans for tomorrow.
Would you still Love me if my looks should fade, or would you pretend you are at a Masquerade
Would you still Love me for the beauty inside, when my looks fail don’t tell a lie, just stand beside me
And Love me for who I am if you do, your my forever friend.
Friendship is a treasure valued beyond silver and gold.
True Love cannot be accurately measured, and Love is the greatest treasure.

When The Storm Rolls In
Ann M Johnson Aug 2017
Things to remember when the storms of life are raging.
It's true, that at times life throws us a curveball, at those times it is best to swing the bat and not just drop the bat and give up, but to keep swinging and giving all I have got to keep living life one day at a time.
In life sometimes my problems seemed too numerous and burdens so hard to bear it felt like the end of everything.
Later on I came to realize that it was just  simply a start of a new chapter in my life. A new beginning not the end at all.
I just needed to look at things differently and gain a new perspective. In life problems come and go. They seem to rowl in and out like a tide. It is best not to get caught in its current or get swept up in a tidal wave but instead to make the most of everyday. To look for and appreciate even the smallest of blessings.

My fingers feel thick while they are tapping
I feel trapped my mind seems blank as I stare at the screen
I feel immobilized and panicked and want to scream
My heart is racing
I feel like pacing
I feel like a shell of my normal self
I do my best to calm myself
The clock is ticking
I feel the urge to race against the clock
I should take a few deep breaths and slow down my body and mind
Instead I follow the fight and flight response and rush myself
I need to get a grip and find a way to overcome the
                    Test Anxiety
It is final's week for me, I would do so much better if I did not struggle with test anxiety. Anybody have any suggestions?

The Dragon
Ann M Johnson Dec 2013
The dragon was guarding his treasures and gold and secrets not yet told
He kept them carefully concealed until it was time for them to be revealed
This short poem was inspired by watching the newest Hobbit movie on Christmas day.
Ann M Johnson Oct 2013
I'm picking up the pieces of a shattered life: like a scattered puzzle I'm trying to find the pieces that will fit right
I'm trying to rebuild and see whats before me, and wanting to know how it will all fit together all right
It's hard to wait and see what the complete picture will be
I know I will get through it if I persist and except help if needed from others too
I ask, will there be mountains or streams will I have an opportunity to pursue my dreams?
I long for learning , I thirst for positive change
I crave for new adventures, for growth, yet at the same time, I'm scared, I don't want to be hurt again
I feel as if there was an earthquake and I am having to deal with the aftershocks
I survived and I know the future is uncertain
I hope I will have the strength to face The Great Unknown
I hope in the end I will succeed and that the outcome would be a better, stronger more confident me
I wrote this when I was going through a Divorce

Out Of The Spotlight
Ann M Johnson Jul 2015
As a child I thought it would be neat to be a Movie Star like Ginger on Gilligan's island, who seemed Glamorous on a deserted island even though far away from all publicity.

As a teen being a movie star was no longer my dream
I dreamed of being a singer but one who would inspire humanity
It did not matter to me if I made it to the spotlight or not
I wanted to do something that I love doing

As I got older my dreams changed
Most of my dreams got pushed aside
do to tending to the realities of day to day living
It became much more important to encourage my children
in their education so they could reach for their dreams

Tell one day my daughter came along and encouraged me to reach
toward my dreams, which inspired me to continue my education
after a several year break
I am not concerned about the spotlight or how much money I will make
I want to encourage other's and help them through tough times
If I am able to also inspire them to try to reach for their dreams
That is worth more than a financial bottom line

Thinking back I am thankful to not have been in the spotlight
After all it is best to view a star from afar
I enjoy my simple lifestyle and anonymity
A lifestyle of Movie Star is not the life for me
It would be tough to have ever mistake (whether real or fake) in every gossip newspaper or magazine
That don't sound like peaceful living at least  not to me
I am content to stay out of the spotlight and live each day
and do the best that I can
I will be starting school soon at a new school for me, I am excited yet nervous while reaching toward my grown up dreams.

I am wondering if any of you out there , my Hello Poetry friend's would like to try out an idea of mine. It may especially appealing to those who have done collaborative poems. It is what I refer to as a Progressive poem. (some of you may have heard of progressive dinners, were you go to one person's house for appetizers, another person's house for  main course , then someone else's for dessert.) This may appeal to someone's creative pallet without calories and be challenging and fun.
We could agree on a topic to write about and  many 3 or 4 people or possibly alternate writing lines and blend it together into a beautifully creative masterpiece a beautiful blending of creative minds.
Any taker's out there on Hello Poetry to accept this Progressive Poem challenge. ( perhaps Mike Hauser or other's who have done a collaborative poem with me, or interested in doing one?) If you might consider please drop me a message on here.

my CPAP machine starting squeaking

She exclaimed when I told her I made her the card, You are a sweetie

She was so cold, I think if she had a potion, it would turn to ice
She was so cold, I think being nice is foreign to her
She was so cold, she gave me the chills
She was so cold, that being near her i felt ill

In The Middle
Ann M Johnson Jul 2015
Somewhere in the middle is the place I don’t want to be
I wonder what happened to me?  It is not like I want to repeat my awkward teen years especially those strong emotions and my bad acne
It is just that the years seemed to fly by too fast
It seems like in a blink of an eye I was 20 than 30 than 40, Oh my!!
A neighbor recently told me “Over the Hill starts at 28”, man alive I hope she’s wrong. If she’s right I’ll take a big breathe and be strong
This road of life that I travel on, speaking of roads, I don’t want to be in the middle of a road either. I once heard a comedian say,” In the middle of the road is yellow lines and dead skunks (I say, oh gross!) If I find myself in the middle of the road my friend’s, I will quickly cross.
If I am in the middle I will cope at all cost. I will live the time I have left to the fullest I can. Make the best of every opportunity and learn all I can.
I will make a bucket list in case I kick the can. I will live in the moment but still plan, plan, plan.
I will continue to let my loved ones know I love them and my friends too. To all you who are reading this I want you to know I appreciate you too! Please forgive my babbling, I recently had a birthday which made me take in account the years that have rushed by
Well I could live another fifty years, maybe even more, “they say that time fly’s when you are having fun”, I am not sure if it is true or not, but watch me as I try
Recent birthday brought this to mind

It's the little things
we often take for granted
as we go about our busy day thinking that
I will talk to them tomorrow instead of taking the time today
We are not guaranteed tomorrow
seize the present  moment today
Once time is gone, it can be recaptured
It is like sand quickly slipping through our hands

The little things that are so precious
like blessings from above
Cherish time with loved ones
before time does slip away
They might not be here tomorrow
but you have today

Those memories are very precious
kept like an image in a locket
held close to our hearts
The love of those closest to us
is likened to a light on a dark and lonely day

It's the little things that are so precious and priceless
which money can never buy
We may not have tomorrow, so we can try to make the most
out of today

What Love Is
Love is caring
Love is sharing
Love is taking time to understand another s need
Love is responsible
Love is wise
Love rejoices It also reaches out to comfort the heart that cry's
Love flows  in the heart peacefully like a mountain stream
It is more beautiful than any dream
It lives it grows with each new day
It folds it's hands to pray
Love is reflected in a mother's caring ways
A glow on a father's face
A sparkle in a child's eye
Love is the greatest treasure
It's worth you can not properly measure

Character Reference
Ann M Johnson May 2016
The best test of one's truest character is not in how one treats their friends
but on how they treat those that they don't particularly like.
It is good to strive to always treat people with the same respect that we expect from others.
After, all we are all sharing this same planet together.
Sometimes an unexpected blessing happens and a former enemy or (bully) becomes a friend.
Some people change and grow and can surprise you.
It may take years but when it happens it can be amazing and really brighten your day!
Live to cherish and see the good things in life than they can outnumber the bad and help put your perspective and life back in balance.

The Dreambuilder
Ann M Johnson Sep 2013
He instills the dream in me
The goal is all i see
He plants and grows the seed
I water the seed
He keeps the seed alive and growing in me
The Dream is growing in me
At night i close my eyes and all I see is dreams
I reach for the dream and he touches me
He makes the dream come alive
So i know it's meant to be
He takes off the blinders and sets the dream in front of me
and says "My child, it's up to you what to do with the dream that's in front of you"
My child walk through, I am with you
I am the Dreambuilder
It's up to you to chose the dream that's before you
Open the door and walk through to your dream
I made it for you because I love you
reach for the dream my child and you will reach for me

I think it is better to focus on what they do right
They often study late trying to get good grades

Some are too busy to focus on what others think is cool
Some are phenomenal writers and have such insight
I read so many poems from them on this site
I think they should get some credit for the good that they do
I met some teens in my community when they volunteered
I give the teens that do right a cheer, I wish to recognize you for what you do!

Too Young To Die
Ann M Johnson Jul 2013
You were Too young to die
I remember you were the popular one
your friends would either poke fun of me
or ignore me
I remember the time you said Hi to me
by the gas station without your friends around
I  think I said Hi back unless I was too shocked that you spoke to me
You suffered with Anorexia, I heard you started having that after some dumb boy
said you were too fat
You became so thin I could clearly see your ribs and other bones stuck out too
even with your clothes covering you
If only I knew what was making you so blue
You suffered with your silent pain
I could have understood
I was suffering too
One day you took your own life
You burned your self in your car with gasoline
  No one heard your screams
It was hard for us left behind to believe what you had done
I was shocked when I heard
I remember the smile you wore hiding your secret pain
I wish  I could have been your friend
You came to an untimely end
I wonder what could have been

Another friend recently told me to hat her son who is only in his thirties is diagnosed as having pancreatic cancer. A lot has happened since I last posted.  On a happier note in February a poem I had posted on here a few years back got published in a local edition of the Sr. Perspective in the poetry section of the newspaper. I wish you all a good and healthy summer.

Does Your Blood Run Blue
Ann M Johnson Jan 2015
My blood runs red when I bleed
You seem so full of hate even when you breathe
You don't seem to care
You seem unaware of the pain you inflict on others
You might suffer from a deceased mind
You might discover some day that it is effecting your insides
perhaps it might lead to necrosis
I wonder when you bleed does your blood run Blue instead of Red
I somehow feel sorry for you, a part of you already seems dead
To prepare for an essay for school, I have been reading works of a darker side that combined with a Life's situation influenced this piece of writing.

Stained Glass
We all have a story to tell.
We can stand alone or become part of a bigger picture together.
We come in different shapes and sizes.
We are all part of a kaleidoscope of various colors like individual gems.
We are each unique but we can band together and become part of a masterpiece.
Some of us maybe smoother than others.
Some of us maybe a little bit jaded.
Some of us may have more lines than others.
While some of us are shapelier than others.
We can choose to shine alone or shine together like precious gems to become a masterpiece of stained glass if we join together and let the light shine through us.
Let your light shine.
The above poem was Published in The October  2018 issue of The Sr. Perspective Newspaper LINDBERG  edition in the Poet's Corner Section.

Does A Name Define You?
Ann M Johnson Jun 2014
I recently went on a website House Of Names.Com
I discovered that my maiden name means Spindle
I don't think it defines me ,my sisters have inherited
the sewing gene not me.
In Home  EC.  in high school I got my finger stuck in
the needle, I did not fall asleep and get woken up by a prince
I instead got make fun of by my teacher and peers alike
When I made  a mistake and used a seem ripper, I ripped the material
Worse of all I was new at sewing and I was given the project of making a sweatshirt with ribbing, and the teacher Exclaimed, " I thought I would you something that was challenging, but I didn't know you had no talent", in front of the whole class, that really hurt and discovering what my name means, has brought up bad memories for me. On the plus side ,though I can sew on a button by hand, beyond that I prefer to delegate the responsibility of sewing to someone else. What's in a Name? I ask you? what does your name mean?
Does it define you or not?
As far as I'm concerned I want to be defined by other things besides my name, if other people don't like it, I say sew what!
Hi, it has been a stressful week, sorry if I'm venting, it was a neat site though and it is nice to learn what certain names mean. I am curious to know what your names mean my Hello Poetry if you wish to share.
